Getting Started with KD Max

Essential knowledge
File Formats
KOC File format of 2D Design module. If this file missed,
you could not go back to 2D Design to modify the
room.
MRS File format of 3D Design. You can save the room
structure, 3D models, the lighting attribute and the
rendering setting in mrs files.
MRM File format of models in render module. You can use it
by dragging and drawing into the scene or by adding
them into library beforehand. You could download
them from http://www.interimodel.com.

Step by Step Tutorial
Start program
Double click desktop icon to load 2D design, and then you can
see the 2D design interface.

Insert floor plan
Go to: Menu Bar > Draw > Insert picture
Find an image in the pop-up dialogue. Note:
Program only supports three image formats: JPG,
BMP and TIF. Click a point in workplace to insert
the image.
You could find a floor plan image named
“sample.jpg” as in the tutorial package to begin
with your first KD Max work.

Adjust Image Scale
Click “Choose reference point” button,
and then click two points to specify a
reference distance.
Note: You might turn off all the Snap
setting at the bottom toolbar to pick a
point freely. But to draw horizontal or
vertical line, it is strongly recommended
to keep the “Snap Angle” turning on.
Give a new value: here we input 5500 in the input box and click OK
button.
Note: Use middle
wheel move up and
down to adjust the
whole picture to a
proper size; Hold the
middle wheel to move
the whole picture.

Start to draw wall
Click “Free wall”
icon on the left
side panel. We
start to draw walls
referring to the
inserted image.
Left click at the
corner, which is marked by the red circle, to start drawing walls. This
point will be the starting point. Notice: you should always pick a
corner in the room rather than out of it.
Check the snap setting
If you found that you couldn’t move cursor freely, please check the
snap setting. In order to trace the wall accurately, turn off “Snap at
length” at the bottom toolbar. To draw horizontal or vertical wall, it is
strongly recommended to keep the “Snap Angle” turning on.

Change wall parameters
Change the baseline position before you
picking another point on the image. Here we
choose Left side.
Note: If you were going to trace the wall in
clockwise, choose “Right side”. But for tracing
the wall in center, you should choose “Central
line”.

Move cursor over next corner, Left
click to specify the end point of first
wall.
This point will also be recognized as
the starting point of next continuous
wall. Move cursor over point two and
left click again.

Use the same way to pick other corners. When tracing the wall,
program could detect existing wall to make your work more
convenient.
At last, move cursor to pick the very first corner. A closed room is
created. Right click to quit current command.
To display the wall in green, select “Menu Bar > Setting > Highlight
Wall”.

Doors & Windows
Next we will insert
doors and windows.
Choose “Arcadia door”
on the left side panel,
and then change its
width, height and
elevation to 2500, 2800
and 0.
Move cursor over target wall. The
door will be located on it
automatically. Move cursor along
the wall to change door’s position.
Move cursor left and right to
change opening direction (inside or
outside). Left click to insert the
door at current position, right click
to quit current command.

Now we will place a window. Click
“Window” in the left side
panel .Change its parameters to
1000x2800x0 and locate it in the
right position as images blow.
And click “Corner window”, change its
parameters as image below and place it by
first clicking one wall and second clicking
next

wall.

Ceiling
To create the base ceiling for the whole room, select “Auto ceiling”
command under “Room” menu. Click a point in the room, and then
change its Elevation to 2800.
Click “Ceiling block” under “Room” menu. Draw
a red rectangle area according to the image’s
ceiling block by clicking first point and second
point.

After this, change its elevation to 2900 and choose “Do not use ceiling
type” when a dialogue box pops up.
It is suggested to turn off all snap settings.
After finished this,
you can delete your
reference image.
Right click on the
image and choose
“Delete”, you will
see as the picture
shown:

Go to Render
To convert your 2D drawing to Render part, click
“3D” icon in the quick toolbar. In the pop-up
“Select Style” dialogue box, click “Cancel” to set
detailed parameters. It pops up another
“Select…” dialogue box. Here we select
“Use template” and click OK.
You will come to select template dialogue, choose [Kitchen01] and
click OK.

Next you can select door style from below dialogue box. Here we
choose Crystal material, No. 05 and click OK to finish settings of the
doors.

Now it comes to parameter settings for handle, worktop, line and
others. Here we click “OK” to keep the default value.

Now we come to Material Settings. Double click the preview picture
of worktop to choose material. It will pop up a window listing
materials for you; just select the material in red frame as image
accordingly. Click OK in the “Set Material for Worktop” window.
Here we use the same way to set wall seal, plinth, carcass etc.
Click OK to finish the material setting. Now you can enter 3D to make
kitchen design.

Layout cabinets
Base unit
When we were in 3D part, there are two ways to
select products. They are “Search type” and
“Select type by folder”.
We are about to lay out cabinets by “Select type by
folder”, the way which is the same with the
previous version of KD Max.
Then a dialogue box appears: “Select Product Style
according to Directory” and select “Base Unit Filler Panel” according
to the following picture:

Now change its dimension
to W100xD580xH720, and
then click “Layout”. It
pops up a prompt which
means you should select a
wall to fix the filler. Just click “OK” then click a wall. Move your
cursor to lay it out in the corner.
Then when you saw a dialogue box
asking you “To extend this filler to wall
or other unit”, choose “No”.

Next we will use another method “Search type” to lay out cabinet/item.
Click “Search type” then a dialogue named “Select Product Style” will
pop up. The structure of this dialogue is consists of three parts. They
are Style, Keywords and the item images. And there are many pages
for user to choose different cabinets.
Here we select Base unit >>choose 1 door>>Drawer Base Unit\Right
Open and then click OK.

Change the cabinet dimension to 500x580x720. Click “Layout” then
the unit will move along the wall. When it gets close to the filler, the
unit will attach the filler automatically. Left click to finish.

Use the same way to lay out sink unit with 2 doors. Select Search
type>>Base unit>>Sink>>Sink unit, 2door. Click OK.

After finishing laying out all base units, next you can install plinth and
worktop for base units.
Click (Auto Install Worktop) and
(Auto Install Plinth) in toolbar to auto-install
worktop and plinth respectively.

Wall unit and extractor
Next, lay out 2 cabinets with 2 up-open doors. Select Search
type>>Wall unit>>wall unit, Down Glass door.

Choose PJ-2393. Dimension: 900x498x621. Change its elevation to
1500.

Right click on the extractor and choose “Stretch extractor pipe”, input
750 in the dialogue box. You can see the extractor is stretched.
Let’s continue to install other wall units.

When you layout sink, just click on that sink cabinet which you want
to install the sink, it will pop up a “Set” dialogue box, just click “OK”
to use its default value (the default location of the sink is on the centre
of this cabinet.)
Then it will pop up another dialogue
asks “Be underworktop sink?” Click
“Yes” to continue.
Next, install oven in base unit. Select
Search type>>Oven>>Roaster 1 door.

Choose PJ-2430. Dimension: 598x19x598. First click to choose the
top panel of void space and Second click to choose the floor panel of
void space.

Install hob. Select Search type>>Hob>>Cooker top, 4 gas hobs.

Choose PJ-2345. Dimension: 750x503x14. Click the cabinet which
you want to install the hob.
Click “OK” when there pops
up a box to keep its default
value.

Next let’s use “Search type by
folder” to get a splash back
panel. Select Search type by
folder>>Hardware>>splash
back.
Change its dimension to W900x D9xH1180, Location mode: over
worktop. And install it in the right position.

Click icon (Arrange adornment) and select Scheme2 in the pop up
dialogue.
You can see some new decorations are automatically added into our
design. If you don’t need some of them, right click the object and
choose Delete. And you could also double click the items to move to a
new place.
Note: you can add some items by using “Search type by folder”.

Install island base units
Select “Search type”>>Base
unit>>2Door>>Baseunit, 2Door. Dimension:
1000x580x720. Change its location mode to
“Special position on floor “and elevation is 130.
Click “Layout”, and
then you will notice
that the system
switches to top view

wall. Select a wall and
locate to the specific
position as image

Click (Last view) icon in toolbar to turn it back to perspective
view. After went back to perspective view, you need to lay out the
same cabinet next to previous one.
Note: This time the location mode should be switch to “on toekick”.

Install plinth and worktop for island base units
Choose “Worktop > Create Plinth > Select Units to Create”, hold
“Shift” Key and left click to select the 2 cabinets, and then right click
to finish.

Choose “Worktop > Select Units to Create Worktop > Auto”, hold
“Shift” key and left click to select the 2 cabinets, right click to finish.

Create illusive door for 2 island base units
Go to “Door > Illusive Door Design” and
click the side panel of the two base units, it
pops up a window: Door Design. Click OK
In pop-up dialog, right click and
choose “other” item to define
door style for the panel selected.

Define illusive door for back panels by the same method above.
Next, we will install
kitchen light above island
base units.
Choose “Select type by
folder”; find the Kitchen
Light model under the “99
Additional library 01>>09:
Decoration” folder.

Click “Layout” to install Kitchen Light model on top of island base
units.

Click on toolbar to go back to last view and continue to install
pilasters. Choose “Select type by folder” >>99 Additional library
01>>08: Pilaster>>Wall unit.

Dimension: 50x20x1150. Location mode: over selected object.
Click layout and choose the kitchen light when system asks “select
object”. We need to install four pilasters here. Now is the first one.

Next, lay out the table, chairs and some adornments on the table.

Change door style
Click icon (Change Material) and find Aluminum Frame door
style. Door>>Pure Color>>Aluminum Frame>>09 (Black color).
Double click the black color to apply this new door style.

Lights on
Click (Lights on) icon on toolbar to open lights. When the
system calculated 15 times, press to stop radiosity option.

Save image
Choose “Render > Save Image”
to obtain the rendering image.
Please set the render parameters
as right side image shows. Usage:
1024x768. Antialias Pixel Point:
3x3; Unselect “Quick Mode”.
Click OK to save this image.

Output quotation
Click icon (Auto
quotation) in toolbar to
output quotation list.
Click OK when popup
“Worktop Size”

You can save the quotation list as .xls or .txt format file by clicking
“Export” and “Export to txt file”. Here we choose “Export” to get a

Click icon (Drawing) in toolbar to output drawings. Click OK
