About This Play
Sueño is the Spanish word for Dream. No matter what country
immigrants come from or what language they speak, dreams are
something that all immigrants have in common. Dreams of a better life.
Dreams of being able to make a living. Dreams of being able to send their
kids to college. Dreams of escaping violence and oppression. All
immigrants are dreamers, not just the ones brought here as kids. Only a
dreamer would give up everything familiar and embark on a journey full
of challenges. Theatre artists are also dreamers. Like immigrants, we
dream of making a living. But we also dream about changing the world.
With every play we try to make a difference. We are citizens of the world,
just like immigrants.
This theatre sits in a neighborhood of immigrants, within a nation of
immigrants. We commissioned playwright Leon Martell to write a story
about what it is to seek “The American Dream” because of the vilification
of immigrants over the past couple of years. Many have labeled
immigrants as being bad people, even though nearly all Americans are
descendants of immigrants. Because we work so closely at 24th STreet
with so many immigrants, we know firsthand that they are not only good
people, they are great people. They are brave and noble and hard-
working and loving. They are dedicated and committed and determined.
So we asked Leon to incorporate some real experiences of immigrants
from this neighborhood into a story that speaks to the bigger picture of
immigration in America. We hope this production speaks to your own
American Dream story, whether you’re a first generation immigrant, fifth
generation, or somewhere in between.
