What’s Inside:
The effective voice of business promoting growth & prosperity.
Increase the VOLUME ofthe VOICE of Business!
The advocacy work of the Chamber willtake top priority in 2013 under the leadership of board chair GordyAdamek. The Chamber Board will concentrate on areas where we can increase our effectiveness in representing the voice of business. Some areas will include closer ties toChamber representatives on area committees, boards and commissions, increased connection to members onlegislative priorities and more intentional messages from the board onlocal issues. Inside this newsletter youwill find details on the 2013 State legislative priorities. The board continues to support GROWFaribault to hear directly from businesspeople about local issues of most importance. The board has also reconfirmed theirsupport for the Chamber workforce education and internship efforts and theChamber’s community programs likeFaribault’s Future and Faribault MainStreet. These initiatives are added to afull menu of traditional Chamber benefits and programs.
Passing of the Gavel! It may not rise to the level of an inauguration, but each year the Chamber transfers the duties of the Chair of the Board fromone great leader to another. Here is Mike Richie (Richie Eye Clinic), handing overthe gavel to Gordy Adamek (Mercury Minnesota). This photo was taken at aBoard meeting but will officially take place at the Chamber Gala on February 9.

In a recent opportunity thequestion was posed to me…given no restrictions and ifmoney was not a factor, what occupation would youchoose to do for a living? After a thoughtful moment…what came tomind was this…I wouldchoose to be in a creativeposition where I had accessto passionate people withstrengths and passions thatcompliment, not necessarilyduplicate my own, having access to a team ornetwork that makes it easy to share resourcesand tap into the creative process that bolstersa successful business climate…then it hitme…it was the very definition of my Chamberexperience.
There may be times one might think aboutcutting back on their Chamber investment, either in time or money, I would urge you toconsider the opposite….jump in with bothfeet. You may choose to attend the events, tapinto the seminars, get together with businessmembers who may have the same challenges,pro-business views and can share ideas andnetwork together. The Voice of Business in
Faribault is alive and well….Where are youchoosing to use your voice? Who’s voice areyou listening to? Does your voice reflect wellon the Faribault community? I am reminded ofthe quote credited to Gandhi, “Be the changeyou want to see in the world”… althoughGandhi did not exactly say that, that quote isparaphrased from a paragraph of one of his 98volumes; Vol. 13, Ch. 153, page 241 to beexact. It goes like this:
"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in theworld of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does theattitude of the world change towards him. This isthe divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing itis and the source of our happiness. We need notwait to see what others do."
The staff at our Chamber is outstanding andwork tirelessly to promote our community as awhole. The effects of this work can be seen, felt and heard….look for the examples, sharethem, appreciate them and do your part tobring positive energy and pride to our community.

From the PresidentIs it too late to makeoffer wishes for theNew Year? I hopenot, because I wantto wish you enough. There is a lovelypoem that is fittingthis time of year, andI have heard it recited as a toast atweddings. It wishes
you enough. Mayyou have enough of
many things that you need in life, butnot too much. We want enough rainand enough sun, enough snow too,but not too much. Enough hardship toknow empathy, enough success to besatisfied, enough loss to be appreciative of all we have. This is agreat message for the New Year and ithas got me thinking about the Chamber too. Our board and active volunteers wantto offer enough benefits to providevalue and return on your membershipinvestment, without over reaching orover promising. We want to keep youinformed about all about the greatprojects, events and programs thatmembers are working on, but worrythat what seems like enough might be
too much. We want to have a variedmenu of services and activities to address our multi-faceted membership, without losing focus onour mission. Our mission is simplystated; we are the effective voice ofbusiness, promoting growth and prosperity. Our board,
dedicated leaderswho really care aboutserving the entirebusiness community, and our staff, experienced professionals who manage the "day in day out" work ofthe organization, hold everything accountable to that mission. Whateverwe do must help businesses grow andprosper. All our activities must movebusinesses in that direction. Whetherdeveloping programs or backing public policy that helps all businessescollectively, or standing beside onebusiness to help them individually; wecan never really do enough. We believewe are offering a menu that providesvalue to all members, but we will neverbe complacent. We are listening andwant to hear from you. We search fornew ideas and strive to stay ahead oftrends to help our members. We try to
see the big picture but also to hone inon the details. We offer seminars, study groups, peer groups, networking, legislative review, leadership program, business assistance, business counseling, retail promotion, manufacturing events, main street
program, business recognition andmarketing, special interestcommittees andmore. Our 2013
business plan is on the Chamber website and will be sent to all members in our annual report. Help usdetermine if what we are doing isenough. Help us see where we shouldchange and grow. As I pull out boxes to store treasured
holiday decorations, I realize I onlywant enough. Same thing is true for allthe wonderful cookies and meals andgifts I have enjoyed over the holidays.Too much blinds us to the value, toomuch makes us complacent andgreedy, too much and we becomestuffed and sluggish. Enough keeps uswanting, searching, seeking, growing. I wish you enough.
Kymn AndersonChamber President
Our board and active volunteers wantto offer enough benefits to providevalue and return on your membershipinvestment, without over reaching orover promising.

Theevening was filled with a summary of2012 accomplishments, an unveilingof priorities for 2013, the sharing of results from a recent survey and therecognition of great leader.Bruce Burkhartzmeyer is the BoardChair for 2013 and was the keynotespeaker. “The key to this past year wasthat we laid a solid foundation forFaribault Main Street”, saidBurkhartzmeyer. “We got a lot of workdone.” Some of the more importantbuilding blocks that were put in placeincluded the hiring of the program’sfirst Coordinator, the expansion of
promotional events such as the CarCruise nights, the installation of bikeracks, Faribault Police Department ledsafety and security discussions, thecreation of the Mystery EntertainmentCrawl, and the development of adonor support program.“Faribault Main Street is a volunteer
driven organization”, saidprogram CoordinatorRoyal Ross. “In fact, wehave had about 80 volunteers help us out
through the year.” Volunteers carry theweight of the program by
serving on committees, organizingand running the events, and informingothers about the Main Street program. According to Ross, “the volunteers notonly do the rowing but also the steering of the ship and are really theheart and soul of our organization.”The priorities for 2013 include workingwith the City in reviewing and updating sign, building, and parkingordinances; maintaining a list of available spaces and recruiting newbusinesses to fill those spaces; developing a stronger relationshipwith the Small Business DevelopmentCenter and the GROW Faribault program; updating the website andmaking it more interactive; and an“every member visit” to gather thebusiness and building owner’s viewsof the best ways that Main Street canserve them.Peggy Keilen is the out-going BoardChair and she was recognized for hertireless efforts over the past severalyears in establishing and promotingFaribault Main Street. She really projected a strong message when shestated that “we have a downtown thatwe’re all proud of.”If you would like to volunteer a little ofyour time and talents to the MainStreet efforts, just give Royal Ross acall at 507-334-4381.
