Recruitment Realities
Recruitment Realities
•Hiring manager opens requisition•HR sends to internal audiences first•Externally, goes to traditional job boards ($$ waster but tons of resumes/garbage)•Recruiters drown in resumes (time waster 200+)•Headhunters??•Hiring manager often may not move forward•Will your resume even be viewed?•1 of 3 openings actually filled
Spray and Pray! When you find possibilities online:
• You are one of hundreds applying for this gig.• You have no idea of the environment/chemistry.• Recruiters often act as gauntlets rather than as
knowledgeable advocates. They are not incented or bound to read every resume or even to maintain communication.
• You’re not in the driver’s seat.• Hope tends to pile up on questionable opportunities
as you wait for a call that most likely never comes.
Are you still waiting? Wake up!
Stand out in the crowd!
Job Hunt 2015
• The bigger intellectual footprint you have online, the higher the likelihood of being found by the right people.
• Be trusted and be recommended, rather than being an intruder.
• In the review/interviewing process, your footprint is confirmation of trust (or distrust). It seals the deal!
• …is about being found/or covertly/aggressively finding your way in.
What is your footprint? www.onlineidcalculator.com
First, build your personal brand
Build Trust For Your Brand
How do I build trust with prospective companies?
• Demonstrate intellectual capital: know your stuff.• Demonstrate a vision for this profession/market.• Show that others took a chance on you and were
highly rewarded.• Show that you’re easy to work with, passionate,
ethical, and trustworthy.
Determine Your Goals/Audience
• What’s your vision for your career in 2020?• What do you want to be known for?• What kinds of people do you want to attract?• Company Specific Managers• Industry Specific Technical Managers• HR Managers/Recruiters• Where do those people “live” online?
How Do I Engage?
• What do people have time for? Respect time starvation. Too Much Information (TMI) is not a selling point.
• Which media would best convey what you’re about?

Finding Jobs Using LinkedIn Search
Don’t – Apply on Company Website
•This is your personal side. Show that you’re relatable while still maintaining a reputable image
•Share your knowledge! Stay active!
•Gather and share content through your social media presence. Enable employers and industry colleagues to see your interests and perspective through blogs and articles you read
Now we’re ready for the Job Search 3.0
The Search. So who’s hiring? Google knows.
66.1%19,975,000,00
0SEARCH ENGINE QUERIES
Yahoo
Bing
It starts with the search.• There are multiple ways to perform an efficient job search
– Find relevant companies hiring through specific keyword searches. If you have a specialty, try including in various searches: occupation title, skillset, location.
– Research terms used for your job type, role level, etc. and apply the terms in a Google search.– Think of companies in specific areas to narrow your search. Can’t think of any? Google companies in
a specific location and search the various results on Google. Wikipedia ranks high on Google and usually has a full list of major companies in your selected areas.
• Narrow down – Once you’ve found a handful of positions you may be interested in, narrow it down and focus on
getting ‘inside’ the company.
Job Boards and Talent Networks
Next Step.
“I submitted my resume online but how do I know it was received?”
Spend the time to formally apply through the ATS
Getting Accepted by the ATS• Do not place your contact information in the header of your resume,
because filtering software's can be set to ignore headers and footers so there is a risk this information will be deleted
• Choose a conservative font such as Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, or Calibri. Times Roman or Cambria may be rejected by screening software.
• Stay away from script fonts• The smallest font size to use for the body of your resume should be 11
point. "Any smaller and you're probably asking for trouble."• No graphics or logos• Do not format using tables• No borders• A one-inch margin top and bottom is best• Do not use any lines that cross the entire page from margin to margin,
because "some filters have been created that will reject a document for nothing more than having a single line run continuously across the page."
Found an Opportunity?Once you’ve decided which jobs are a fit and you would like to apply, begin the fun part.
Networking!
Mobile• Owning a smart phone can have a positive impact on your job
search. – You can be more responsive– You can take your job search any where. Don’t miss those
opportunities!
