This high level of energy consumption by buildings accounts for 60% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is therefore crucial to reduce emissions from building sector to achieve Japan's contribution to global GHG reductions. Japan’s target by 2030 is approximately 40% GHG reduction in building sector.
JSBC (Japan Sustainable Building Consortium) works closely with IBEC (Institute for Building Environment and Energy Conservation) to lead and support various green building and building energy efficient programmes including the CASBEE rating system. CASBEE has covers from new to existing buildings, from landed residential homes, urban development to even city-level scale. JSBC’s focus is in its research and discussion scheme, with a broad network in the building sector which develops and improves CASBEE. JSBC’s current priority is on healthy and smart offices & homes which is now one of the highest concern in Japanese building community.

The fact that this is an election year is not helping either. Key PrioritiesWe have modified our sponsorship outreach to smaller and niche events and intend to increase the number of events to cover greater ground, giving greater awareness whilst aligning to the needs of our industry players in this current circumstance.
We have stepped up our efforts in marketing our Green Pages Malaysia directory, slated to be out by January 2018 by offering discounts to repeat customers. This will be our 5th edition. The market has responded well thus far and we aspire to explore an international clientele so as to encourage cross border trade of green building products, thus giving better options to the industry.
We have adopted 2 themes in our upcoming IUSGBC IGEM2017 international conference, October 11 & 12, which we feel are the most crucial in promoting green buildings currently; business case for green buildings and health and wellbeing in workplaces. As is evident, we have taken the cue from the WorldGBC, recognising the fact that the awareness of these themes can give industry players the edge they need.
With Malaysia GBC being the Regional Vice Chair for Asia Pacific Network, we aspire to engage our industry players who have gone beyond our borders to build green wherever their projects might be, especially in countries that are not members of the WorldGBC.

With our recently launched green building certification system, we are prioritizing working with government to achieve recognition as the central body for green building and product certification. We are partnering with the government on developing a comprehensive energy efficiency criteria to include in public sector building projects, and conducting workshops and outreach programmes with 12 education institutes as well as capacity building seminars and forums on building green with industry professionals.
We also launched the Green Excellency Awards in 2016 to recognise efforts by industry players such as architects, engineers, developers and building product companies, and raise awareness of the new green building guidelines.
