Green Square stormwater drain alignment
Green SquareStormwater Drain ProjectSydney Water and the City of Sydney are building a 2.4 kilometre underground stormwater drain from Link Road, Zetland to the existing stormwater system at Alexandra Canal.
The new drain will help reduce hazardous flooding during torrential rain in and around the new Green Square Town Centre and enable further development.
The drain is being built using a combination of open trenching and microtunnelling, with work happening across multiple locations simultaneously.
Construction began in mid-2015 and should be finished by the end of 2017.
Sydney Water and the City of Sydney have formed an Alliance with UGL Engineering, Seymour Whyte Constructions, Parsons Brinckerhoff and RPS Manidis Roberts to deliver this project.

Microtunnelling involves using a tunnel boring machine to install pipes about 10 m underground without disturbing the surface. The tunnel boring machine digs an underground path, into which we install concrete pipes. We build 10 m wide pits at each end of the path to launch or retrieve the machines.
Most of the work along this section is happening on Sydney Water’s easement, which runs from Maddox Street to the start of the canal. We are installing the new stormwater drain by open-trenching. Work involves:• widening the existing open channel between Maddox Street and the Canal
• removing trees on the eastern side of the easement
• relocating existing underground services on Huntley Street
• landscaping.
Work along this section is happening on City of Sydney land, private property and Crown land (Perry Park). The new drain is being installed by microtunnelling, a safer and more efficient alternative to open trenching.Work involves:• constructing 10-metre wide pits at 100-metre intervals to either launch or retrieve the microtunnelling machines
• using cranes to lift the microtunnelling machines into and out of the pits
• installing the stormwater pipes as each new section is tunnelled
• connecting the newly installed pipes at each underground pit
• backfilling each pit and restoring the area.
Work along this section will occur on Joynton Avenue, on land owned by the City of Sydney and on private property. Work involves:• relocating some existing underground services
• digging trenches to lay new stormwater pipes
• connecting the newly installed pipes to the existing stormwater system at Link Road
• backfilling the trenches and restoring impacted areas.
This work started in mid-2015 and will take about 12 months to complete. This work started in August 2015 and should be finished by late 2016. This work will start in late 2015 and will take about 12 months to complete.
