Relevant Customer Service Experience Sales Assistant Next plc June 2012 - Present I have a wide range of responsibilities which require me to work independently and collectively within a group. I have been made responsible for working in the company's stock room alone on a Saturday, the busiest day trading in the week, dealing with requests from customers via fellow staff members on the availability of certain items of clothing or jewellery. When allocated to work on the shop floor, it is vital that I demonstrate excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate with others in a clear and coherent fashion. Bar Staff Compass Group Sep 2009 - May 2012 During the football season I worked in the Kiosk at Hillsborough. I served drinks and snacks which required me to work quickly under pressure to meet frequent requests for service. It also enabled me to improve my communication skills as I worked with a group of people who I only met on the day and to understand the demands of working productively in a team to achieve set tasks. Customer Service Representative Orange Call Centre June – Sep 2009 Duties included helping customers with a wide range of problems with their mobile phones, which required good communication and administrative skills. It was important to deal quickly and tactfully with issues and to ensure that problems were resolved as quickly as possible and to the customers’ satisfaction.
33
Other Experience Student Ambassador Sheffield Hallam University Sep 2011 - June 2012 Worked as a tour guide on University open days, welcoming prospective students and showing them around the campus as well as giving history tours on the coaches. I also participated in various workshops and focus groups from analysing departmental websites to evaluating brochures and promotional literature for prospective and undergraduate students. Current Affairs Writer/Editor Sheffield Student March 2011 – June 2011 Working for the student newspaper required dedication as well as strong communication and teamwork skills in order to meet deadline dates. In my capacity as News Editor I was required to research potential stories, organise layout proposals and lead weekly team meetings. Classroom Assistant Sheffield High School, Sheffield June 2011 This temporary placement involved assisting students with their work in a range of subject areas and enabled me to contribute to the local community. I found this experience very challenging, but believe it helped me to understand how to interact and communicate with a variety of different groups of people. Office Worker Sheffield Street Infant School December 2008 I undertook all the core administrative tasks such as filing, word processing letters and used a wide range of reprographic equipment. The experience helped me to become more organised and taught me how to prioritise objectives. I established a good working relationship with the other members of staff which allowed us to achieve our set tasks.
Activities, Interests and Skills Computing Skills Good working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, image handling, database and internet browsing software as well as a basic knowledge of HTML. Currently working towards a European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification. Travelling I enjoy travelling as it enables me to participate in new cultures whilst presenting exciting and varied challenges. During the summer of 2008 I participated in a cultural exchange programme that enabled me to find employment in Vancouver, Canada which subsequently funded extensive travel in North America. In August this year I am due to travel by rail through Russia, Mongolia and China. Sport I have always felt it important to remain physically active and I regularly participate in organised sporting activities such as indoor football.

Appendix 1: Review of my scientific career
PhD Thesis – Bacterial Competition Throughout my career I have been fascinated with biologically interesting protein interactions. During my PhD I tackled the important question of bacterial competition. Bacteria kill each other by secreting colicin proteins. They protect themselves by expressing immunity proteins. The cognate colicin-inhibitor complex is one of the most stable and specific in nature. Convention dictated there would be no non-cognate interaction but I discovered the weak binding of Im8 to a highly related colicin, E9. To understand the structural basis for the specificity of colicin-immunity protein interactions I determined the solution structure of Im8 by NMR. By comparing this structure with the structures of Im7 and Im9 (the immunity proteins for colicins E7 and E9) I suggested a structural ground for specificity in their binding to colicins. An image from our publication was chosen for the cover of Biochemical Journal. In finishing my thesis I investigated the non-cognate interaction of Im8 with the colicin E9 DNase domain using NMR. This work provided a basis for further PhD studies.
Research Project – Protein Complex Specificity In the group of David Neuhaus, in collaboration with César Millstein, I addressed DNA: protein complex specificity. Using NMR I addressed the structural basis for DNA recognition by the zinc finger containing DNA binding domain of poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP-1), an abundant nuclear enzyme involved in DNA repair and apoptosis. In contrast to most zinc finger proteins it recognises a DNA conformation, a single stranded break, rather than a sequence. My NMR studies have revealed the fold of this novel zinc finger and the basis for its molecular interaction. I determined a low resolution solution structure of the target DNA ligand. I honed my molecular biology and protein purification skills as PARP-1 is toxic to bacterial cells. Several tricks were needed to optimise NMR samples. I carried out NMR experiments to study the binding to a nicked DNA ligand. I also contributed to the structure determination of the C-terminal domain of the Inhibitor Protein of F1 ATPase, published in the Journal of Molecular Biology.
Current Research – Study of Large Non-Covalent Complexes Currently, I am a post-doctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Carol Robinson. My research is focused on the application of electrospray mass spectrometry to the study of large non-covalent complexes. The instrumentation and expertise in Prof. Robinson’s lab provides the unique opportunity to do this. My main project involves observation of intact ribosomes from yeast and Thermus thermophilus. I recorded the first tandem mass spectra of the acidic stalk complex from yeast, revealing its spatial arrangement of the various proteins. This dynamic but functionally essential region is inaccessible to high resolution structural approaches. My MS data uniquely reveal that the stalk complexes from thermophilic bacteria have a different stoichiometry from those of mesophiles, indicating a thermal adaptation. This was published in PNAS. My other main focus is the membrane protein complex ATP synthase from T. thermophilus. My MS data from micelles containing the entire complex provided the essential information to define the stoichiometry of the stator. We have submitted this to EMBO Journal. This project has provided experience in manipulating membrane protein complexes. I was also involved low resolution structural characterisation of the human initiation complex eIF3.

Research experience
I conducted a quantitative research project for my MSc Psychology degree which gave me a strong grounding in the research process. I designed the
study, obtained ethical approval and recruited over 150 participants. A mediation analysis, using the statistical package SPP, was used to demonstrate
that psychological capital could explain why higher levels of physical activity were associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Research continued
In order to further develop my research skills I am currently conducting a qualitative project for my MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology degree. This
project aims to be the first to explore performance slumps and psychological resilience in elite cricket batsmen. I am currently collecting data in the form of
in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data will be analysed to produce a thematic analysis.
Academic interests
My broad interests are around positive psychology in sport and exercise. More specifically I am interested in how positive psychological capital (optimism, self-
efficacy, psychological resilience and hope) can contribute to successful sport performance, psychological well-being and growth. I am also developing a
passion for self-determination theory and motivational interviewing; particularly the use of motivational interviewing to evoke personal agency, autonomy and
self-efficacy in order to influence behaviour change.
