Week 4 (5/25/20) - 5th Grade Mathematics!
Unit 5, Module 4
Unit 6, Module 3
This week's focus will finish up our work with fractions and look at volume. While there
are many activities within this home learning packet, there is only one graded
assignment in math each week. It can be found on the next page. You may choose
to complete the graded activity first and submit it to your teacher for feedback. If
you are struggling with the activity, it is suggested that you complete the
following activities. Once complete, you can take a picture and send it to your
teacher through email, class dojo, text, etc…

Day 1 - Tuesday: Unit 5 - Module 4 - Session 3
Dividing Whole Numbers by a Fraction Last week you learned about 2 division interpretations - Sharing Problems and Grouping Problems. Here is an example of both for :01 ÷ 2
Last week you also learned that when dividing a whole number by a fraction, the grouping interpretation makes more sense than the sharing interpretation. For Example:
Now you will work on the following page to practice - you can do questions 1a and 2a and if you are up for a challenge you can do 1b and 2b.
Here are some of the models that you might have thought of in the previous problems, or you can use this to help you think of a model if you get stuck.
Challenge Model Illustrations and Answers:
Here are a few problems you can try on your own also:
Expression: ____________________________ I can make _________ batches of cookies.
Expression: ____________________________ It will take ________ days to fix.
Expression: __________________________ There are ________ servings in a quart of ice cream.
Expression: ____________________________ I will take ______ days to get there.

Day 2 - Wednesday: Unit 5 - Module 4 - Session 4 Sharing Stories
Try to create a Sharing Problem and a Grouping Problem for each situation.
It might be difficult to think of ½ of something being split 4 ways. It’s okay if you get stuck. You will work with the Geoboards to help build a better connection to this concept. Think back to when you worked with the Geoboards in the previous weeks activities and found the area of parts of a 1x1 square on the Geoboard
If region A on the Geoboard is ½ of a pan of cornbread that 4 dogs will share, use a pencil to divide Region A into 4 pieces. Here are some possible responses to number 4 on the More Division Combinations page.
The Geoboard will be a useful way to model and solve some of the problems for today, but others will require a sketch instead. Each problem will have a blank geoboard next to it to use if needed. :) Here is a story problem for you to model and solve using a sketch (no geoboard for this one)
● First, divide the square into thirds and shade in the third farthest to the left yellow.
● There was a third of a pan of cornbread leftover from dinner the other night, and Alonzo’s mother gave him permission to divide it evenly among their three dogs.
● Equation to represent this situation:___________________________
● What fraction of the pan of cornbread will each dog receive? ______________________
Here are some possible responses:
* Remember that you are dividing the entire pan, than than just the fraction of remaining cornbread Now you will have a couple of story problems to work through that will practice the idea of dividing a fraction by a whole number. Remember you can use the blank geoboard if it is a fraction that can be made on the board. If not you can draw a sketch like the above example.
Equation:______________________________________________________________________
Day 3 - Thursday: Unit 5 - Module 4 - Session 5
Dividing a Fraction by a Whole Number To start let’s review the two different interpretations of division that you have been using lately - sharing and grouping. Take a look at this example to refresh your memory of these two interpretations:
Now think about and the two ways to phrase the situation - sharing first, and then grouping./4 21 ÷ Think about which version makes more sense.
● One-fourth of something shared evenly between two people. ● The number of groups of two you can get out of ¼.
Highlight the one that makes more sense. If you are a little confused, that’s ok, remember when you divide a unit fraction by a whole number, the sharing interpretation makes better sense than the grouping interpretation.
Next you will be working on some more word problem situations that involve fractions divided by whole numbers. Remember to create a labeled sketch to help solve the problems.
Here are some examples of models that you might have used or to help you if you get stuck!
Answer Keys:
You can complete the More Do-It-Yourself Story Problems for more practice if needed.
Day 4 - Friday: Unit 6 - Module 3 - Session - 5 Volume Bingo and Volume Problems
In today’s session you will be introduced to Workplace 6c Volume Bingo - You will need a spinner which can be made with a paperclip and a pencil.
