Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Jesus tells us that the greatest commandments are to “love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) And so we believe that it is crucial in our walk with Christ to continue to learn and grow in our faith. The Journey program is Centreville United Methodist Church’s way to offer you opportunities to deepen your spiritual life, strengthen your understanding of faith, and learn more about the God that we follow.
This fall, Centreville’s Journey program will kick off its fourth year with new classes, lectures, and events to help you grow. Between September and December we will offer both long-term, and short-term learning opportunities. Some of the studies will ask you to read a book or watch a lecture in advance of the class meeting. Others will simply invite you to come and learn together. Some of our classes build from week to week and others allow you to come when you are able. The Journey program is designed to meet the needs of everyone on all different walks of life. Whether you are exploring Christianity, new to the faith, or con-tinuing in your walk with Christ, we hope that you will consider taking this next faithful step on your Jour-ney.
We would also like to express our gratitude to the many hands and hearts whose dedication, hard work, and prayer have guided us to this place. Many people have given their time, talents, gifts, service, and witness to provide these opportunities. We are grateful for their leadership and willingness to guide us all closer to Christ.
We pray that these classes will be a meaningful experience for you, and in all things they will draw you close to our great teacher, Jesus Christ.
Grace and Peace,
Will Montgomery Ellen LaCroix Fillette Michelle Holmes Chaney

Fear of the Other
We live in a world full of otherness, but what does that
mean for Chrisans- the original ‘Other’. As Bishop
Willimon writes, “Compeng aIempts among
policians to leverage our fear of the others into votes
for them led to the idea of this book that thinks as
Chrisans about the Other.” This four week study will
take a closer looks at the way we handle Otherness in
our current culture. Who is the Other? Should we be
afraid? How are we called to respond to the Other as
people of faith?

A shorter version, eight weeks, of the Disciple Bible
study series. This video-based study approaches the
Hebrew Scriptures by inving parcipants to hear the
story of God and God's calling of the people of Israel
through the many "voices" of the biblical text. To
understand fully the story of God's covenantal
relaonship with Israel calls for listening to these
various ways the story is told throughout the Old

Just like the characters in the Bible, your life tells a
story. God wants to be inmately involved in each of
our lives, and wants to offer us an identy that provides
purpose for which we were created: To know HIM
through Jesus and become more Christ-like. We will
explore snapshots of the journeys of Abraham, Sarah,
Naomi, Jacob, Peter, and a few other notable people in
the bible, and the transformaon God wants to bring

Earn. Save. Give.
During this 4 week class, we will explore John Wesley’s
thoughts and beliefs. How we earn, save and give
impacts the way we live out our Chrisan Faith.
Wesley’s simple approach was “earn all you can, save all
you can and give all you can.” The emphasis in this class
and in the upcoming life-stewardship campaign is not
about having more money, but using our money more
wisely in all areas of life. Such will impact not just what
we give, but more importantly how we live. We will be
using the Rev. James Harnish’s book “Earn. Save. Give”
as out text for this class.

Paul’s First and Last Le5ers: Gala#ans and Philippians
Galaans, the first New Testament leIer wriIen by Paul
(49AD), blazes with passion! Marn Luther loved this
leIer. It has been called “the charter of Chrisan
freedom” - freedom from the Law of Moses, and from
every yoke imposed as an external condion of
salvaon.
Philippians, Paul’s last leIer, was wriIen from prison 4
or 5 years later. It refers to joy more mes than all of
this other leIers put together, though he was awaing
a judge’s decision which would probably be a death

The gospel of Matthew begins with a genealogy that
traces Jesus’ descent from Abraham. Embedded in the
long list of fathers you will find just few names of
women from the Old Testament. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth,
and Bathsheba each have a fascinang story and

Renegade Gospel - Study for Youth
Who was Jesus, really? Wasn’t the central figure to the
Chrisan faith a man who denied all preconceived
noons about what God should look like? Wouldn’t
associang with him have meant joining a rebel
movement? Doesn’t it sll? Renegade Gospel is a church
study that challenges believers to come to terms with
the real Jesus—the rebel Jesus. The four-session DVD
based program will challenge the youth who parcipate
and lead them close to Jesus the Christ.

A New Dawn in Beloved Community - Morning and
Evening Class Offered
Among Dr. King’s most compelling visions is that of
a Beloved Community – a community in which people of
different backgrounds recognize that we are
all interconnected and that our individual well-being
is inextricably linked to the well-being of others. This
book brings together a collecon of stories--of songs--
that give the reader insight, that provide examples of
how to share stories and learn from them, and that
ulmately can lead to a new way of understanding the
concepts of beloved community and the body of Christ.
These stories and readers’ stories together build a new
community.
