Miss E.S. Innes 1900s

Founded the Nurses League in 1925 and was

eventually appointed ‘Lady Superintendent’ of the

Infirmary. During World War 1 she

was also principal matron responsible for nursing staff

across all hospitals taken over by the War Office

became Chief Nursing Officer in the Dept of

Health & Social Security

Samuel Rowling1874-1950

Began the accurate measurement of

anaesthetic agents

Hugh Garland1903-1967

Outstanding leader who was a founder member of the Association of British

Neurologists

Frank Parsons1918-1989

Performed the first kidney dialysis in the UK on 30 September 1956. There

followed a period when only LGI was providing the service for the whole of the UK with

patients being transferred by train to the hospital

Maurice Ellis1905-1997

First accident & emergency consultant to be appointed in the country (and many

say the world!).Author of the Casualty Officers’ Handbook and the first President of the

national Casualty Surgeons’ Association

Leslie Pyrah 1899-1995

Set up the first renal dialysis unit in the UK.

Director of the Medical Research Council unit in Leeds and Professor of

Urological Surgery. Performed what was

possibly the first cadaveric transplant at LGI
