Year 8 student Shani Harris encourages girls to ride
BMXs
On Tuesday 15th October, Shani
Harris, Year 8, featured on a
programme on CBBC, encouraging
girls to ride BMXs. Shani is very
dedicated and practices five days
a week. Shani along with her
friend Nicola, who she met whilst
riding at their BMX club, want to
see more girls in the sport and
hope to become coaches when
they are older. The girls love riding so much that even when they
fall on the track they get back up and carry on riding. The girls
support each other and push each other to be better riders.
Fire Safety – Fireworks Warning!
Watching fireworks is great fun but as Bonfire
Night and Diwali approach, we would like to
remind parents to take care as children are
more likely to get hurt by fireworks than
adults. The most common injuries nationally
are to hands, followed by the eyes and face.
Most injuries happen at family bonfires
or private displays. Please take care this
fireworks season.
Please remind your child that it is illegal
for children under 18 to be sold fireworks
and to have them in their possession.
Fireworks are also prohibited inside or
within the vicinity of the school as part of
our Offensive Weapon Policy and any
breach can lead to permanent exclusion.
KFS Autumn Student and Parent Online
Questionnaires
Please be reminded that details of how to
complete our confidential Autumn student and
parent questionnaires have now been issued via
student and parent email addresses. These
surveys are an important way for our
stakeholders to share their views on what we do
and to help us improve our services. The closing
date for completion is Friday 8th November 2019.
Thank you in advance for your support. Please
address any queries to Mr Sear, Deputy
Headteacher via [email protected]

THEME & WORD OF THE WEEK
Success or Failure ‘My will shall shape the future.
Whether I fail or succeed shall be no one’s doing but my own.
I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze.
My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.’
Charlatan “ A person falsely claiming to have a
special knowledge or skill.”
first be respectful to others.’
Inexorable
‘Continuing without any possibility of being stopped’
Starting in early November, all Year 7 students will have the
opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Reader (AR)
programme at Kingsdale Foundation school.
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and
monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child
picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own
pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the
computer - passing the quiz is an indication that your child has
understood what has been read. AR gives both children and
teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher
then uses to help the child set targets and with ongoing reading
practice.
Children using AR have a free choice of the books they read,
rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a
much more enjoyable experience as they feel in control and can
choose books that are interesting to them.
We will provide parents with more information once students
have all been given their login details after half-term but in the
meantime parents might like to read one of the suggested
books below. They cover a range of reading abilities and all have
AR quizzes. You can also visit the AR BookFinder at
www.arbookfind.co.uk to conduct a search of all available
books with AR quizzes.
As with anything, performance improves with practice.
Encourage your child to read at home. Create a culture of
reading in your household by reading with your
child, starting a home library, visiting your local
library or bookshop on a regular basis and
by letting your child see you read.
When reading with your child, stop
and ask questions to be sure your
child comprehends what they have
read and, in general, make a habit
of discussing books that each of
you have read.

Take part in Pearson’s new writing
competition open to young people aged 12-16. This is the chance for our students to tear up the rule
book and create their own 21st Century take on classic
fairy tales, fables and regional folk stories. Whether it’s
Cinderella meeting her not-so-evil stepmother, magical
smartphones or classroom kingdoms, students are
being given the opportunity to get creative and put a
personal twist on the tales by reflecting on their own
personality, location, heritage, interests and experiences.
Students can also create a fable or fairy tale of their own.
The winning entries will be collated into a collection of
short stories. The winning entrants will receive copies of
this collection and an additional prize based on being
either an individual or group.
Closing date: Friday 29th November 2019

Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents
Book Title: A Farewell to Arms
Author: Ernest Hemingway
Age Range: 14+
Why students should read it:
A Farewell to Arms is the
unforgettable story of an American
ambulance driver on the Italian front
during World War I and his passion
for a beautiful English nurse.
Set against the looming horrors of
the battlefield - the weary,
demoralised men marching in the rain
during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound
struggle between loyalty and desertion — this gripping,
semi-autobiographical work captures the harsh realities
of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep.
Ernest Hemingway famously said that he re-wrote his ending
to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words
right.

Student School Email
A reminder to all parents that the school
operates a student email system.
This system is used by staff at the school to communicate
key messages with the students, including curriculum and
organisational information. Students have been issued with
their login details and those who have not yet received
these details, should contact their tutors as soon as possible.
We would be very grateful if parents could encourage
their child/ren to log in to this important system and to
check their school email accounts on a regular basis.
What Career Live at Olympia London
On Friday 11th October, we were delighted to give our Lower
Sixth students the opportunity to attend What Career Live at
the Olympia Exhibition Centre in Hammersmith. This two-
day event is free for all students aged 15–19 and offers
students the chance to meet with some of the UK’s top
employers and universities.
As part of the event, students could attend talks on choosing
the right career path, CVs that get results, finding the
right university and studying in the USA. There were
workshops about careers in STEM, what employers
want and getting started in creative industries.
Students could also access one-to-one feedback as
part of the CV clinic and the careers advice lounge.
The two hours whizzed by very quickly and
the students had a great time.
Our Sixth Formers left Olympia armed with
prospectuses, leaflets, web addresses and
plenty of new tote bags!
As ever, they conducted themselves brilliantly
and were a real credit to the school.
