Starting in early November, all Year 7 students will have the

opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Reader (AR)

programme at Kingsdale Foundation school.

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and

monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child

picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own

pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the

computer - passing the quiz is an indication that your child has

understood what has been read. AR gives both children and

teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher

then uses to help the child set targets and with ongoing reading

practice.

Children using AR have a free choice of the books they read,

rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a

much more enjoyable experience as they feel in control and can

choose books that are interesting to them.

We will provide parents with more information once students

have all been given their login details after half-term but in the

meantime parents might like to read one of the suggested

books below. They cover a range of reading abilities and all have

AR quizzes. You can also visit the AR BookFinder at

www.arbookfind.co.uk to conduct a search of all available

books with AR quizzes.

As with anything, performance improves with practice.

Encourage your child to read at home. Create a culture of

reading in your household by reading with your

child, starting a home library, visiting your local

library or bookshop on a regular basis and

by letting your child see you read.

When reading with your child, stop

and ask questions to be sure your

child comprehends what they have

read and, in general, make a habit

of discussing books that each of

you have read.

Take part in Pearson’s new writing

competition open to young people aged 12-16. This is the chance for our students to tear up the rule

book and create their own 21st Century take on classic

fairy tales, fables and regional folk stories. Whether it’s

Cinderella meeting her not-so-evil stepmother, magical

smartphones or classroom kingdoms, students are

being given the opportunity to get creative and put a

personal twist on the tales by reflecting on their own

personality, location, heritage, interests and experiences.

Students can also create a fable or fairy tale of their own.

The winning entries will be collated into a collection of

short stories. The winning entrants will receive copies of

this collection and an additional prize based on being

either an individual or group.

Closing date: Friday 29th November 2019

Book of the Week Recommended by teachers, librarians, pupils and parents

Book Title: A Farewell to Arms

Author: Ernest Hemingway

Age Range: 14+

Why students should read it:

A Farewell to Arms is the

unforgettable story of an American

ambulance driver on the Italian front

during World War I and his passion

for a beautiful English nurse.

Set against the looming horrors of

the battlefield - the weary,

demoralised men marching in the rain

during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound

struggle between loyalty and desertion — this gripping,

semi-autobiographical work captures the harsh realities

of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep.

Ernest Hemingway famously said that he re-wrote his ending

to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words

right.

Student School Email

A reminder to all parents that the school

operates a student email system.

This system is used by staff at the school to communicate

key messages with the students, including curriculum and

organisational information. Students have been issued with

their login details and those who have not yet received

these details, should contact their tutors as soon as possible.

We would be very grateful if parents could encourage

their child/ren to log in to this important system and to

check their school email accounts on a regular basis.

What Career Live at Olympia London

On Friday 11th October, we were delighted to give our Lower

Sixth students the opportunity to attend What Career Live at

the Olympia Exhibition Centre in Hammersmith. This two-

day event is free for all students aged 15–19 and offers

students the chance to meet with some of the UK’s top

employers and universities.

As part of the event, students could attend talks on choosing

the right career path, CVs that get results, finding the

right university and studying in the USA. There were

workshops about careers in STEM, what employers

want and getting started in creative industries.

Students could also access one-to-one feedback as

part of the CV clinic and the careers advice lounge.

The two hours whizzed by very quickly and

the students had a great time.

Our Sixth Formers left Olympia armed with

prospectuses, leaflets, web addresses and

plenty of new tote bags!

As ever, they conducted themselves brilliantly

and were a real credit to the school.
