LAST TWO WINNERS BACK FOR CLARK
by Brian DiDonato
Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday) and Effinex (Mineshaft),
the 2014 and 2015 winners of Churchill=s GI Clark H.,
respectively, square off Friday in a renewal of the race that
features just about everybody you=d want to see from this
division barring the two superstars that stand firmly atop it.
Hoppertunity shipped into Effinex=s back yard for the Oct. 8
GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, and employed his typical grinding style
to wear down that foe--who he finished second to in the >15
Clark--by a half-length. He came up a neck short of a distant
third in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic Nov. 5, and will look to
break trainer Bob Baffert out of a three-way tie for most Clark
trophies at three.
Effinex, a somewhat surprising second in last year=s Classic
behind American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), earned a first
Grade I here 12 months ago and seemed poised for a solid 2016,
but has been sort of hit or miss this term despite victories in the
GII Oaklawn H. in April and GII Suburban H. in July. He finished
seventh, beaten 24 lengths, in the Classic last time.
Effinex will be joined in the starting gate by fellow Jimmy
Jerkens trainee Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper), who was a day-of
scratch from the Breeders= Cup Classic after spiking a fever. Cont. p3

Clark H. cont. from p1
The 2015 Queen=s Plate winner has had a productive year
since transferring from the Brian Lynch barn. He aired in
Belmont=s 12-panel GII Brooklyn Invitational S. June 11, but
settled for fifth in
the Suburban after
traveling on a dead
rail for much of that
affair. Brought back
in Saratoga=s GI
Woodward S. Sept.
3, he out-kicked a
group that included
a curiously ridden
MGISW Frosted
(Tapit) and fellow
Canadian Classic
winner and GSW
Breaking Lucky
(Lookin At Lucky) to score in a blanket finish.
Noble Bird (Birdstone) is another who occasionally turns in a
head scratcher, but who is awful tough to beat when he=s on his
game. Last year=s local GI Stephen Foster H. hero snapped a
four-race winless streak when crushing a weak field in the GIII
Pimlico Special H. May 20, but he failed to fire behind Frosted in
either the GI Metropolitan H. or GI Whitney H. in New York over
the summer. Back under the Twin Spires for the Oct. 1 Lukas
Classic S., the John Oxley colorbearer controlled things up front
to defeat Hawaakom (Jazil) by daylight. He dominated in gate-
to-wire fashion in Keeneland=s GII Fayette S. Oct. 29, and is the
one they=ll have to reel in again Friday.
Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimeys Farm=s ultra-
consistent Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) looks to complete a
season in which he=s hit the board in seven of eight tries while
earning more $1.676 million. A debut winner here at two, the
bay kicked off his sophomore season with back-to-back victories
in the GII Risen Star S. and GII Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.
Third in the GI Kentucky Derby, he took a step down in class and
stayed at Churchill to cruise in the June 18 GIII Matt Winn S. The
chestnut was third in the GI Travers S. Aug. 27, runner-up in the
GII Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 24 and settled for second after
striking the front and seeming to be on his way to victory in the
GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile Nov. 4.

Harmonize (Scat Daddy) and Hawksmoor (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}),
second and third respectively in a tight finish with Time and
Motion (Tapit) in Keeneland=s GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge
Cup S. Oct. 15, lead a deep field for Friday=s GII Mrs. Revere S. at
Churchill Downs. A Grade III winner at two, Harmonize opened
her sophomore season with a
stakes win at Gulfstream
before blowing the break and
running on for third behind
Catch a Glimpse (City Zip) in
the course-and-distance
GIII Edgewood S.
May 6. Second as the favorite
behind Time and Motion in
Belmont=s Wonder Again S.
June 5, she could only
manage fifth in the GI Belmont Oaks July 9, but shipped out
West away from the strongest members of her division to annex
the Aug. 20 GI Del Mar Oaks. Last early in the Oct. 15 QE II, she
flew home to fall a head short at 10-1 while out-nosing
Hawksmoor. The well-traveled Hawksmoor was in Deauville=s
G1 Prix Saint-Alary in May before annexing the G2 German 1000
Guineas in June. She was third by a half-length in the July 17
G2 Kilboy Estate S. at
The Curragh, and
attended a solid
enough pace in the
QE II before pulling
clear at the top of
the lane, only to be
reeled in in the dying
strides. The Lael
Stables colorbearer
makes her first start
since being
transferred from
Hugo Palmer to
Arnaud Delacour.
Front-running
Ontario-bred Caren
(Society=s Chairman)
seeks her fifth-
straight victory, but
first outside of
Woodbine. She annexed the Bison City S. on Tapeta July 10, and
added the grassy Wonder Where S. Aug. 7. Cont. p5

TDN Podcast with Karl Broberg - For the past three years, no
trainer in America has won more races than Karl Broberg. He
has been described as `the most driven man in horse racing'
with an insatiable appetite for success. But Broberg's 2016 took
a tragic turn when his wife Samantha was declared lost at sea
after falling overboard from a cruise ship in May. This week,
Broberg talks about putting his life back together and raising his
four children after the tragedy. Click here to listen.

Off the board in three Japanese tries thisterm, she came to the States in search of the firm ground sheprefers. While she certainly got it at Santa Anita, she had noobvious excuse last time, but woke up on the class drop here. Away without issue from the rail, the chestnut was held understout restraint and sat midpack while scraping paint early. Shetook closer order as they slowed it down past the wire for thefirst time, but had nowhere to go leaving the final turn asfavorite Arles produced a three-wide run. Switched off theinside for running room at the head of the lane, Nuovo Recordtook some awkward strides as she tried to get her feetunderneath her, but when eventually she did, she zoomed pastthe chalk to get up in a tight one. AWe were drawn down on the inside and I wanted to staythere--to save ground,@ said Yasunari Iwata, who had riddenNuovo Record in more starts than any other pilot in Japan. AThisis a tight course and I wanted to save all I could. It was an idealtrip that way. The first time around she was running well. Thenwhen we came into the stretch the second time, the horses infront of me fanned out. I thought they would and I wentoutside. My mare has a really good late kick. Thatcher Street entered this contest with a 6-3-2-1 record over
the Churchill grass, and exited with the first graded win of his
career. Second in this spot 12 months ago, the bay annexed the
local Opening Verse S. here May 21 before finishing third behind
Pleuven in the GII Wise Dan S. the following month. Third in
added-money events at Indiana July 16 and Kentucky Downs
Sept. 10, he found himself on the lead early last time in an Oct.
26 Keeneland allowance and checked in fourth.
Quick from the blocks, Thatcher Street was reined in by Brian
Hernandez to stalk from fourth while kept out in the clear. He
inched closer stacked three deep down the backside, and took a
narrow advantage midway on the home turn. Pleuven found a
seam and seemed to be doing better than Thatcher Street to
midstretch, but the latter punched back gamely with the
accomplished The Pizza Man bearing down on the top two as
the wire appeared.
AHe loves this turf course and he really brings his A-game every
time,@ trainer Ian Wilkes said. AIt=s great to have such nice
horses. We=ve got real nice horses and that=s what it=s all about.
They=re all tremendous, they=ve run real well and I=m just so
proud of them.@
Thatcher Street=s dam was bred to Tiznow this past breeding

STEVENS NIXES OAKLAWN PLANS, WILL
TEAM UP WITH RUIS STABLE by Bill Finley
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens has agreed to be the stablerider for Ruis Racing, a growing force in the sport that is based inSouthern California. Withthe move he will stay inCalifornia and hascancelled plans to ride atthe upcoming Oaklawnmeet. Ruis, a former trainer, returned to the sport in abig way as an owner aftermaking a substantialamount of money sellinghis business, AmericanScaffold. Ruis has been busy at the sales of late, purchasing anumber of well-bred, expensive horses. AMick Ruis Racing retained me to stay here and enter into apartnership with them,@ Stevens said. AThey have purchased alot of bloodstock this year and they're based here in California.I'll be riding for them, but still open to ride other horses whennot booked with them. AThey bought a lot of yearlings this year. They already have atop filly in Union Strike (Union Rags). She won the [GI] Del MarDebutante this year and ran in the Breeders' Cup, where shehad a rough trip. They're planning to run her back in the [GI]Starlet Dec. 10. They've got a lot of nice yearlings with greatpedigrees. You never know if they'll run to their pedigrees. Youknow how that goes. But he bought enough of them that I'msure we'll come up with some good runners." Said Ruis: AWe have known Gary and the Stevens family foryears. To be able to work together to develop these horses is agreat opportunity for both of us. We are excited to see wherethis takes us.@ Stevens, 53, said he definitely plans to ride throughout all of2017, but admitted he can't go on forever. "It's winding down right now and this gives me a lot moreoptions,@ he said. AHopefully, this will be more than just a ridingpartnership. Hopefully, it will work out to be something morewith Mick.@ The Ruis Stable owns a spot in the $12-million GI PegasusWorld Cup, but does not yet have a starter for the race. Stevenssaid that Ruis is working to fill the void. ARight now, he's still in the process of working that out,"Stevens revealed. AHe's received some phone calls and hasmade some phone calls and we're looking to fill that spot eitherby a lease or a partnership. We're also trying to acquire a horsefor ourselves to run. We are open to all possibilities.@

off an extended break to finish fifth in the GIII Transylvania S. at
Keeneland Apr. 8. He could
only manage eighth as part of
a chalky entry in a Saratoga

woke up when outfitted with

off affair Aug. 14, besting
Hunter O=Riley. The dark bay
was most recently third--a
head behind Strike Midnight--
in the English Channel S. over
soft Belmont sod Oct. 23. Away well, the narrow favorite sat
second under stout restraint and was joined by Strike Midnight
to his right flank turning for home. That foe gave his all, but
Catapult easily shut the door to win in convincing fashion. AHe
ran really well,@ offered Cherie DeVaux, assistant to trainer Chad
Brown. AHe was pulling a little bit in the beginning, but came
with a really good run in the end. He's been training really well
and looks fantastic, so we'll continue on from here." The winner,
a grandson of GISW Capote Bell, is a half to an unraced 2-year-

KEESEP yearling. His dam produced a Trappe Shot colt earlier
this term before being bred back to Kitten=s Joy. Click for the

cutting back off a speed-and-fade

already looked long gone hitting the
top of the lane and, despite drifting
out late, was never in serious
danger of being run down by
favorite Eloquent Riddle. AI thought
it was an amazing race,@ said
winning conditioner Eddie Barker. AI thought that the [Star
Studded] was going to go to the lead, but Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] used his
head and when that other horse didn't break, he went. She's
just a really nice filly. We didn't pay much money for her, but
she's got so much talent. There's more to her too, I can tell you.
She's just got so much talent and we hope we can go on to
bigger and better things later on in the spring. For now, we're

NEW JOB FOR CHAMP CROWLEY
Fresh from being crowned Britain=s champion flat jockey of
2016, Jim Crowley has now landed the plum role of first jockey
to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. Sheikh Hamdan and the
previous incumbent Paul Hanagan ended their association
recently and, following a tremendous campaign that saw him
ride 148 winners to win his first championship, Crowley was the
man sought by the owner to fill the role. AIt's very exciting news
and we're thrilled to have him on board,@ said Angus Gold,
racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan. AI spoke to Jim two nights
ago and he confirmed he would be happy to do it. He'll be going
out to Dubai for the Carnival, which starts in early January, and
I'm sure he'll be in place for that.@ The team had a few
candidates in mind for the job and explaining the reasoning
behind their ultimate choice Gold added, "We discussed various
options and he came up with the idea of Jim. He has worked his
way up and proven to be a top jockey. He's done a brilliant job
this year to become champion and we're very happy to have
him.@ Crowley himself has made no secret of the fact that he
craves more big-race success and he commented, AI want to add
more big races to my CV. Every jockey wants to be riding in
Classics, and I've hit the crossbar twice, finishing second in the
Oaks and the St Leger.@
TORONADO COLT SHARES TOP BILLING AT
TATTERSALLS by Emma Berry
The National Stud's first-season sire Toronado (Ire) was in the
spotlight at Tattersalls' December Foal Sale as trade warmed up
significantly and one of his sons shared the top spot with a colt
by Kodiac. With 17 foals bringing six-figure prices during a
vibrant second session, the average, median and clearance all
received significant boosts. The average was up by 9% to
40,005gns and the median rose by 15% to 30,000gns. The day's
turnover dropped by 2% to 8,441,000gns but this was from 43
fewer horses sold than on the equivalent day last year--211
compared to 254--for a clearance rate of 82%.

Toronado storms to the lead... Bought by Jim and Paul McCartan in partnership with Michael
Carty, the Toronado colt's price of 190,000gns was a further
endorsement for his unraced dam Raskutani (GB) (Dansili {GB}),
the dam of G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Agent Murphy (GB)
(Cape Cross {Ire}) and a daughter of Wellsummers Stud's
foundation mare Oshiponga (GB) (Barathea {Ire}). James
Stewart, who bought the Marlborough-based farm back in 2003
and selected Oshiponga at Tattersalls the
following year for 65,000gns, said, "He's
been well prepared for the sale by the
Castlebridge Consignment but I am a great
believer in breeding on exceptional land
and I think that the good bone my foals
have is a credit to the fresh Wiltshire
downland on which we're based."
He added, "As a TBA member, I'm also
pleased that these sort of results show what
can be achieved by small farms with just a
couple of nice families." In the case of this
colt (lot 655), it's a family in which success runs deep. Stewart
bred G2 Superlative S. winner Hatta Fort (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})
and his G3 Sweet Solera S.-winning half-sister Blue Bayou (GB)
(Bahamian Bounty {GB}) from Oshiponga, while further relations
include Inchinor (GB) and Oshiponga's half-sister, the GI EP
Taylor S. heroine Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Recent Classic
glory has come in the form of G1 St Leger winner Harbour Law
(GB) (Lawman {Fr}), who is out of another of Oshiponga's
half-sisters, Abunai (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).
For Stewart, it's the second terrific result in the sales ring in
less than two months after Raskutani's yearling colt by Azamour
sold for 230,000gns at the October Sale to Roger Varian, and
there could yet be more to come as the
10-year-old mare features as lot 1747 in
next week mares' sale.
The breeder continued, "I've kept two
daughters of Oshiponga. I turned down a
big offer for Blue Bayou but sometimes you
have to stand your ground as a small
breeder in order to develop a family. I also
have her Champs Elysees (GB) yearling filly,
who will be going into training."
Pinhooker Jim McCartan, who conducted
the bidding on behalf of his partners, has
struck lucky with this family before. At the 2013 December
Yearling Sale he bought Harbour Law's half-brother Moheet
(Ire), by Toronado's sire High Chaparral (Ire) for 41,000gns and
made a tidy profit when selling the stakes-placed colt for
Lot 655 | Tattersalls

800,000gns at the Craven Breeze-up Sale the following spring.
He said of his most recent purchase, "We all thought he was an
exceptional foal. We waited for him and went to the back ring to
see him again. We liked the Azamour yearling and hopefully
Roger [Varian] can help us along with him. It's a lot to pay for a
foal by a first-crop sire but Toronado was a good horse."
Ronald Rauscher clearly shares McCartan's view and with the
session drawing to a close went to 145,000gns for lot 777, the
Toronado half-brother to this season's Listed-winning juvenile
and Group 3-placed Global Applause (GB) (Mayson {GB}). The
chesnut colt began his life at Cobhall Court Stud, the home of
versatile breeders Robin and Scarlett Knipe, who are also
responsible for the outstanding hurdler and Cheltenham Gold
Cup hope Thistlecrack (GB) (Kayf Tara {GB}). With 41 weanlings
on offer this week Toronado has the strongest representation of
any of the freshman sires and his 19 to sell so far have returned
an average price of 35,816gns.
Dream results for Bolton Grange Stud... Andrew and Jane Ellis of Bolton Grange Stud still have their
retired 23-year-old homebred mare Pizzicato (GB) (Statoblest
{GB}) at their Northumberland farm and her grand-daughter
Inyordreams (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) did the family proud on
Thursday when her Kodiac (Ire) colt sold late in the day to equal
the top price of 190,000gns. Lot 746 is the first foal of the Listed
Boedicea S. winner who is herself a daughter of the outstanding
juvenile Wunders Dream (Ire) (Averti {Ire}). He was bought by
Anthony Stroud on behalf of Ballydogen Stud.
AYou have certain expectations but you never really like to
pre-empt a result," said Jane Ellis, who consigned the colt
through Paul and Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud. "He's been
a lovely colt right from the start and we've had the family for a
long time."
Another member of the family preceded the colt in the ring
and the son of Helmet (Aus) lot 745 out of Pizzarra (GB), a
Shamardal half-sister to Wunders Dream, also sold well,
attracting a bid of 92,000gns from Jimmy Murphy of Redpender
Stud.
Bumble creates a buzz... John Ferguson made four purchases on Thursday, going to
180,000gns for an Invincible Spirit (Ire) colt (lot 708) bred in
partnership by his consignor Bumble Mitchell and the Irish
National Stud. His dam Kerry's Dream (GB) (Tobougg {Ire}) is a
winning half-sister to G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Lady's Purse
(GB) (Doyen {Ire}) and has already produced the Listed winner
Ventura Mist (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}).

Cape Cross (Ire) was officially retired by Darley back in March
after failing to get any mares in foal and with seven members of
his final crop going through the ring at Tattersalls this week,
Ferguson struck early to claim lot 526, a colt out of Gower Song
(GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) for 170,000gns. The Usk Valley Stud-bred
weanling is a brother to Melodious, runner-up in the G2 Park Hill
S. last season for David Elsworth, who also purchased their dam
as a yearling for
17,000gns. Racing in
the colours of Kevin
Mercer of Usk Valley
Stud, Gower Song
went on to win six
times, led by the
G3 Dubai City Of
Gold at Nad Al
Sheba.
"He's always has
been a lovely sort, so light on his feet and typical of his sire and
dam. He was vetted more times than any other I have brought
here," said Mercer. "I have always supported Cape Cross--his
fortunes have gone up and down, but I am a big fan."
While Cape Cross may not always have been a rock-solid
commercial proposition, he continues to make his presence felt
in Classic company. He sired last year's Derby winner Golden
Horn (GB) and is the grandsire of this year's Epsom hero
Harzand (Ire), whose sire Sea The Stars (Ire) was Mercer's
selection to cover Gower Song this year.

Hopes high for Wuheida=s relation... James and David Egan of Corduff Stud are notoriously bold
pinhookers and they struck early on Thursday to claim a colt by
Dark Angel (Ire) (lot 511) from the immediate family of one of
the leading fancies of next year's fillies' Classics, Wuheida (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}). Bred by Nick Bradley and consigned by Glebe
Farm Stables, the April-born colt is out of Secrets Away (Ire)
(Refuse To Bend {Ire}), a half-sister to Wuheida's talented dam
Hibaayeb (GB) (Sinsgpiel {Ire}), winner of the G1 Fillies' Mile and
GI Yellow Ribbon S. He also attracted plenty of interest from Gay
O'Callaghan, who pushed the Egans' agent Richard Brown to
145,000gns.
AHe's a very good model and of course there's been a big
update," said Brown, referring to Wuheida's victory last month
in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac. "She will hopefully give us
something to cheer about next year. There's nothing like an
active family and Dark Angel just goes from strength to
strength."
Despite losing out on this foal, Gay O'Callaghan's
Yeomanstown Stud had made a splash eight lots earlier when
being behind the first six-figure transaction of the sale and
buying lot 503 for 125,000gns. The daughter of Iffraaj (GB) is the
second foal of Listed Prix Finlande winner Ighraa (Ire) (Tamayuz
{GB}) and was bred in Oxfordshire by Simon and Mags Hope of
Aston Mullins Stud in partnership with Stephen Barrow.
Out of the dependable Deerpark Styd matron Frond (GB)
(Alzao), Ighraa is a half-sister to fellow Listed winners Nashmiah
(Ire) (Elusive City {Ire}) and Streets Ahead (GB) (Beat Hollow
{GB}). She was one of 11 purchases for Yeomanstown Stud, the
secodn busiest buyer at the sale so far with a total outlay of
717,000gns.
Another fan of Iffraaj is Philipp Stauffenberg, who went to
130,000gns for lot 635, Ringfort Stud's daughter of the Listed
winner Zayn Zen (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), who is already the dam of
five winners. These include Ennaadd (GB) (King's Best), who won
the Listed Hyde S. since the publication of the catalogue, while
his 2-year-old half-sister Hersigh (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}) has
won twice since Oct. 6. Also featuring on the page is the great
Fillies' Triple Crown winner Oh So Sharp (GB) (Kris).
"She is from a good family, has a good page, with some nice
updates," said Stauffenberg, who will consign her to next
season's yearling sales.
This charming man... The smile on the face of Nicky Murray grew wider and wider
with each turn of the ring she took with her Charm Spirit (Ire)
colt (lot 680), who was eventually sold to Denis Brosnan's Epona
Bloodstock for
140,000gns--representing the
best sales result for Murray
and her husband Chris, who
bred the son of Tweenhills'
first-season sire under their
Whitwell Bloodstock banner.
The couple bought his dam
Postale (GB) (Zamindar), a
half-sister to G1 Prix Jean Prat
winner Mutual Trust (GB)
carrying to his sire Cacique
(GB) for 72,000gns from the February Sale of 2014 and sold the
resultant foal for 47,000gns last December.

FIRST WINNER FOR SIRE
"You see results like this happening to people at the sales and
it's a way of life to some people but it's not our way of life," said
Murray, who admits that she burst into tears once she'd
returned the foal to his stable.
"He has been an absolute star and has grown in presence and
stature in the few days since he's been here. He's just thrived on
being at the sales. The more people that looked at him, the
more he loved it. I hope that sort of temperament stands him in
good stead as a racehorse and he's been bought by an
extremely good farm. I wish them luck when they bring him
back to the sales next year." Postale, who is now in foal to
Mayson (GB), got off to a great start when her first foal Star
Archer (GB) (Champs Elysees) won a maiden for Hugo Palmer in
September. Postale's dam Posteritas (Lear Fan) lot 1810,
currently in foal to Kingman (GB), and half-sister Exonerate (GB)
(Cacique {GB}) lot 2115 feature among Juddmonte's draft at
next week's December Mares' Sale.
The first foals of treble Group 1-winning miler Charm Spirit
have been well received so far at Tattersalls, with 11 sold for an
average of 62,891gns. Also among the top lots on Thursday was
the Charm Spirit colt out of Thankful (GB) (Diesis), who was
offered as lot 616 by his breeder Tim Cooper of Nuthurst Farm
Stud and sold to pinhooker Brendan Holland of Grove Stud for
110,000gns.
The Murrays' Norfolk neighbour Charlie Mason also enjoyed a
good result just six lots later when his Dawn Approach colt (lot
686) sold for 135,000gns to Kingwood Stud.
Mason bought the colt's unraced dam Maynara (GB), a Manduro
(Ger) half-sister to Group 1 winner Mamool (Ire) (In The Wings
{GB}), for 42,000gns at the 2014 July Sale and this is her first
foal.
The December Foal Sale continues today at 9.30am.

ANNIE FIOR (IRE) (f, 2, Finsceal Fior {Ire}--Annamanamoux, by
Leroidesanimaux {Brz}), who was fourth after meeting trouble
during her debut over six furlongs at Leicester Oct. 24, was
ignored at 16-1 and settled in fourth early without cover.
Staying on strongly to collar Cercle d=Or (Ire) (Acclamation {GB})
with a half furlong to race, the i19,000 GOFNOV foal asserted
to beat that half-sister to Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) by

a half length. Annie Fior becomes the first winner for her first-
season sire (by Galileo {Ire}), who was the first foal out of
owner-breeder Michael Ryan=s brilliant Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr.
Greeley) and who retired unraced due to injury and stands at
the Co. Waterford-based Green Hills Stud. She shares her
second dam, the GI Santa Ana H., GI Ramona H. and GI Vanity H.
heroine Annoconnor (Nureyev), with some smart types including
the G3 Prix Andre Baboin-winning Caesarion (Ire) and fellow sire
Way West (Aus) who captured the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude S.
Annoconnor is a half to the G1 Grand Prix de Paris, G1
Melbourne Cup and G1 MacKinnon S.-winning sire At Talaq from
the family of sires Northern Hal (Ire) and Scribe. The dam also
has a yearling full-brother and a colt foal by Clodovil (Ire).

ANOTHER GROUP 1 FOR MALAGUERRA? The G1 Winterbottom S. takes centre stage at Ascot in
Western Australia on Saturday and this open age sprint provides
a good opportunity for Malaguerra (Aus) (Magnus {Aus}) to
register a Group 1 double this month. The 5-year-old proved
himself a top notch sprinter last autumn when he won the
G1 UBET BTC Cup at Doomben in May beating Dothraki (Aus)
(Mossman {Aus}) and
Japonsime (Aus) (Choisir
{Aus}). The Peter
Gelagotis-trained gelding
maintained that progress
when he reappeared this
spring, finishing second
to Star Turn (Aus) (Star
Witness {Aus}) in the
G2 Schillaci S. at Caulfield
Oct. 8, before beating
Spieth (NZ) (Thorn Park {Aus}) in the G1 Darley Classic at
Flemington Nov. 6. His chances got a further boost when he
drew barrier one for Saturday=s 1200m contest.
Terravista (Aus) (Captain Rio {GB}) also arrives to the race in
good form and should make a bold show. Already a Group 1
winner when beating the mighty Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta De
Lago {Aus}) in the 2014 G1 Darley Classic, Joseph Pride=s 7-year-
old made a nice seasonal debut when a short-head second to
Redzel (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) in the Listed Mumm S. over 1000m
at Flemington Nov. 3. Vega Magic (Aus) (Lope De Vega {Ire})
looks somewhat of a dark horse. The Sean Casey trained 4-year-
old has only met defeat once in five starts and his last time win
over the re-opposing Rock Magic (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus})
in the G3 Colonel Reeves S. at Ascot Nov. 12 also gives him the
edge over the army-monikered trio of over Battle Hero (Aus)
(Stratum {Aus}), Regal Commander (Aus) (Nadeem {Aus}) and
Military Reign (Aus) (Universal Ruler {Aus}) who also take their
chances on Saturday.

DOYLE TO FILL IN FOR MCDONALD With Godolphin=s number one Australian jockey James
McDonald caught up in an alleged betting infringement, UK-
based James Doyle will step into the breach and ride for
Godolphin in Australia until the McDonald matter has been
resolved. Doyle has ridden for Sheikh Mohammed=s team in
Australia in the past and
will take up his new role
in early December. AThis
is a great opportunity to
spend more time in
Australia and I am
looking forward to the
challenge,@ commented
Doyle on his new role.
John O=Shea is
Godolphin=s main trainer
in Australia and he welcomed the move to install Doyle for the
coming months. AWe=re blessed to have another world-class
rider to step in when needed. James has been a member of our
team here in Australia in the past and has always fitted in
extremely well,@ O=Shea said. Godolphin managing director in
Australia Henry Plumptre reiterated that Godolphin would
support McDonald while stewards in Sydney investigated
allegations made against him. AWhile we continue to support
James McDonald over the period of the investigation, we also
have a racing stable to run and James Doyle, who is a retained
jockey for Godolphin, is one of the best jockeys in the world.
With the winter recess in the UK, he is available to ride in
Australia for Godolphin and Sheikh Mohammed and we are
delighted to have him,@ Plumptre said.
