JUDDMONTE TO PURCHASE COOLMORE=S
PEGASUS SPOT
Juddmonte entered into a private deal to purchase Coolmore=s
spot in the gate for the $12-million GI Pegasus World Cup at
Gulfstream Jan. 28, it was announced Thursday.
Juddmonte=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic hero Arrogate
(Unbridled=s Song) will continue to train with this race in mind.
Winner of five of his six starts, the Bob Baffert-trained ATDN
Rising Star@ shattered the course record in his 13 1/2-length
romp in Saratoga=s GI Travers S. Aug. 27 and ended two-time
Eclipse winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit)=s perfect 2016
season with a half-length victory in the Nov. 5 Classic.
Arrogate will face off with California Chrome once more in the
upcoming Pegasus and may make one more start prior to that
test. They gray most recently breezed seven furlongs in 1:24.80
Wednesday at Santa Anita.
In addition to Arrogate and California Chrome, other possible
Pegasus runners include GIII Harlan=s Holiday S. one-two
Stanford (Malibu Moon) and Keen Ice (Curlin); recent allowance
winner Neolithic (Harlan=s Holiday); GISW Shaman Ghost
(Ghostzapper); and Argentian MG1SW Eragon (Arg) (Offlee Wild).

Keen Ice | Christie DeBernardis
Cont. from p1
The 49-year-old, who has won 31 trainer titles in New York,
has gotten off to a stellar start at the Gulfstream championship
meet, where he has been leading trainer for 13 straight years
from 2004 to 2016, with 12 winners, seven of which were black-
type. Pletcher has plenty to be excited about as the meet
continues with three possible contenders for the $12-million
GI Pegasus World Cup Jan. 28 and a slew promising juveniles.
! KEEN ICE (c, 4, Curlin)
Donegal Racing=s Keen Ice is best known for handing Triple
Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah
(Pioneerof the Nile) the only defeat of his 2015 campaign in last
summer=s
GI Travers S. while
under the care of
Dale Romans.
Transferred to
Pletcher after
finishing a non-
factor eighth in the
G1 Dubai World
Cup, the hulking
bay was injured
shortly after and
did not make his first start for Pletcher until Oct. 7, finishing
third in a Belmont allowance. A respectable third behind
Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) and California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit)
in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic next time Nov. 5, he was second
to stablemate Stanford (Malibu Moon) in the GIII Harlan=s
Holiday S. at Gulfstream Dec. 17.
AThe plan for Keen Ice was to run in the Harlan=s Holiday even
though we knew it was a little short of his best distance, but we
felt like a race was important to prepare him for the Pegasus. I
thought he ran very well considering that, like I said, the distance
was a little short and the fractions were a little soft for a horse
like him that likes to come from off the pace. He ran well, came
out of it well and [owner] Jerry Crawford is in the process of
securing a spot [in the Pegasus starting gate], so right now it
looks like we will go forward for the Pegasus.@

Stanford | Leslie Martin
Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! STANFORD (c, 4, Malibu Moon)
Stonestreet Stables and the Coolmore contingent=s Stanford,
who earned his first graded score in the Apr. 23 GII Charles
Town Classic, was benched
after a non-factor eighth in
the GI Metropolitan H. at
Belmont June 11. He made a
successful return off the
bench last time with a front
running victory in the GIII
Harlan=s Holiday S. last
Saturday (video), after which
Pletcher named the Pegasus
as a possibility. However,
Coolmore sold their Pegasus
slot to Juddmonte Thursday
and Stonestreet currently
does not have a spot in the
gate.
AI think [Coolmore selling
their Pegasus spot] potentially could [affect Stanford=s chances
of running in the Pegasus]. Coolmore owns 50% and Stonestreet
owns 50%. I really haven=t had a chance to speak with everyone
since his race and see what the plans are. I think we are going to
see how he does between now and the time we have to make a
decision. I would envision him pointing for Jan. 28 either to the
Poseidon S. or the Pegasus, depending on what those
connections decide. He came off the bench, ran a great race and
he seems to be in good form, so we think Jan. 28 is in the cards.
It is just a matter of which race. We would like to take him to
Charles Town to defend his title [in the Apr. 22 $1 million GII
Charles Town Classic]. We will see if there is a race between Jan.
28 and then or we will just go right to Charles Town. He seemed
to like the track there last year, so we will take him back again
this year.@
! NEOLITHIC (c, 3, Harlan=s Holiday)
Starlight Racing=s Neolithic checked in second in Aqueduct=s
GIII Discovery S. Nov. 11 and romped by nine lengths last time in
a 1 1/16-mile allowance in Hallandale Dec. 14 (video), which
Starlight=s Jack Wolf said was a prep for the Pegasus.
AHe=s definitely pointing towards the Pegasus. Starlight owns a
gate, but they are also working on some other ideas. I think, one
way or another, we hope to have him in the Pegasus.@

Faja | Lauren King
Fact Finding | Kenny Martin
Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! FAJA (c, 2, Bodemeister)
Harrell Ventures LLC=s Faja was tabbed a ATDN Rising Star@
after an ultra-impressive 8 3/4-length victory in his career bow
going a mile at Gulfstream last Saturday (video).
AHe=s an interesting colt. It took a little while for him to kind of
get everything together and we were in no rush with him. He has
very patient owners who just
said, >Take your time.= So, we
brought him down to Palm
Beach and he just started
getting better and better. In
particular, his last two
breezes were quite good. I
had a little reservation about
running him first time out at
the mile, but we were sort of
running out of options. It was
either go a mile this past Saturday or the next opportunity at
Gulfstream was seven furlong, but not until Dec. 31. We said,
>Well he=s ready. Let=s go ahead and go.= He actually handled the
mile quite well. Most likely scenario would be, we would come
back in a one-other-than and go from there.@
! FACT FINDING (c, 2, The Factor)
Coolmore and Stonestreet teamed up to purchase Fact Finding
for 350,000gns at this year=s Tattersall=s Breeze-Up Sale and his
record currently stands at a perfect three-for-three. Following a
debut win at Saratoga Aug. 6 with a Keeneland allowance score
Oct. 12, the juvenile
earned ATDN Rising Star@
status for his seven-length
victory in a sloppy
renewal of Gulfstream=s
Smooth Air S. Dec. 10
(video).
AWe haven=t nailed
anything down for sure,
but he seems to be doing
well with a little bit of space between races. Having already won
his first three starts, we got a good foundation in him at two, so
we probably wouldn=t be thinking of anything until the beginning
of February, which puts the [GII] Holy Bull [S.] in play on Feb. 4.
That=s a possibility, but there are a lot of options. One good thing
about the stakes programs, not only at Gulfstream, but at Fair
Grounds and Oaklawn, is you have a lot of options. You just have
to pick one when you think you=re ready, but I=d say right now
the Holy Bull is a good possibility.@ Cont. p6

Zulu | Lauren King
Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! BODE=S DREAM (f, 2, Bodemeister)
St. Elias Stable=s Bode=s Dream also boasts a perfect record,
starting with a first out success at Gulfstream May 11 to provide
her freshman sire with his first winner. Becoming Bodemeister=s
first stakes winner with a victory in Belmont=s Astoria S. June 9,
the gray was subsequently shelved, but returned with a decisive
score in the House Party S. in Hallandale Dec. 10 (video).
AWe are considering the Old Hat S. on Jan. 7. She seemed to
come back in good form. She ran a sharp race. If we felt like we
needed more time we could wait til the following month for the
[GII] Forward Gal [S. Feb. 4], but we are leaning towards the Old
Hat at the moment.@
! DESTIN (c, 3, Giant=s Causeway)
Twin Creeks Racing Stables and Eclipse Thoroughbred
Partners= Destin, a full-brother to GISW sire Creative Cause,
showed a lot of promise early in his sophomore campaign,
winning both the GIII Sam F. Davis S. and GII Tampa Bay Derby.
Sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby May 7, the gray came up just a
nose short in the GI Belmont S. June 11 and was third in the GII
Jim Dandy S. July 30. He was last seen finishing ninth to Arrogate
in the GI Travers S. Aug. 27.
AHe is in training at Bridlewood in Ocala. We are hoping to get
him in after the New Year and we don=t have any definitive plans
at the moment.@
! ZULU (c, 3, Bernardini)
Stonestreet Stables and the Coolmore contingent also joined
forces to take home Zulu for $900,000 at last term=s Fasig-Tipton
Florida sale of 2-year-olds in
training. The ATDN Rising Star@
opened his account with a pair of
impressive victories at Gulfstream
and was second to $1.2 million
KEESEP buy Mohaymen (Tapit) in
the GII Xpressbet.com Fountain of
Youth S. Feb. 27. Benched after
he failed to fire in the GI Toyota
Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 9,
the bay returned a winner in Gulfstream=s Tamarac S. Dec. 18
(video).
AHe came out [his last race] very well. It was a nice return for
him and good to see him come back and run so well. Right now,
I=d say that the [GIII] Hal=s Hope S. on Jan. 14 is a possibility, but
he is more likely to wait until February for the [GII] Gulfstream
Park H. [Feb. 11] going the mile.@ Cont. p7

Syndergaard (r) & Practical Joke duel to the

Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! SYNDERGAARD (c, 2, Majesticperfection)
Capturing his career-bow against fellow Empire-breds at
Saratoga Aug. 8, $450,000 OBSAPR buy Syndergaard was named
a ATDN Rising Star@ for
his good-looking
victory in the Spa=s
NY-bred Funny Cide S.
Aug. 26 (video).
Coming up just a nose
short of GI Hopeful S.
winner Practical Joke
(Into Mischief) after
setting a swift early
pace in the
GI Champagne S. Oct. 8, the chestnut checked in fifth in the
GI Sentient Jet Breeders= Cup Juvenile last time Nov. 5.
ASyndergaard is in Florida. He got a little vacation after the
Breeders= Cup and is at Stonestreet in Ocala, so I doubt we=d see
him until March at the earliest. We would definitely point him
towards a stake. I=m just not sure which one. We wanted to give
him a little more of a break after [this year]. He will start back in
training at Stonestreet sometime after the New Year and then
we will work it out from there.@
! THEORY (c, 2, Gemologist)
WinStar Farm, China Horse Club and SF Racing=s Theory was
arguably one of the most impressive debut winners of the
Saratoga meet, romping by 5 1/2 lengths to become a ATDN
Rising Star@ July 30
(video). Capturing
Belmont=s GIII Futurity
S. next out Oct. 15, the
bay was a
disappointing 10th last
time in the Breeders=
Cup Juvenile and came
down with a fever the
day after the race.
AHe just arrived back
to us. He ended up having to stay in California for almost a
month before we felt like he was good to ship. He went to
WinStar to get a little bit of light training there. He arrived at
Palm Beach Downs on Tuesday, so he has galloped a couple of
days there. It shouldn=t take long for him to get his fitness level
back, but we haven=t really locked in on a race or work schedule
yet. Obviously he didn=t fire his >A= race in the Breeders= Cup, but
being sick afterwards was a legitimate excuse for that.@ Cont. p8

Sweet Loretta | Sarah Andrew
Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! SWEET LORETTA (f, 2, Tapit)
Vinnie Viola=s St. Elias Stable went to $750,000 to acquire
Sweet Loretta as a weanling at the Keeneland November sale.
Capturing her
Monmouth Park
unveiling by a
dominant seven
lengths June 18, the
bay took Saratoga=s
GIII Schuylerville S.
next out July 22 and
was a dead-heat
winner of the Spa=s
GI Spinaway S.
Sept. 3 (video). She suffered the first loss of her career last time
when 11th in the GI 14 Hands Winery Breeders= Cup Juvenile
Fillies Nov. 5.
ASweet Loretta is getting a vacation at Crupi=s Farm in Ocala. I
think she will probably start her back in training sometime after
the New Year as well. She got a pretty significant cut going into
the first turn [of the Breeders= Cup] on her right front pastern
and she had to have a lot of stitches for that. All of that has
healed up very well and should not affect her moving forward
from a soundness perspective. It was just a matter of getting all
that healed up and freshening her up a little bit. We are looking
forward to getting her back to Palm Beach Downs maybe in
February.@
! NONNA MELA (f, 2, Arch)
Running away to a 7 1/4-length victory in her career bow at
Monmouth July 2, St. Elias Stable=s Nonna Mela won Saratoga=s
GII Adirondack S. next out Aug. 19 and was most recently fourth
in Belmont=s GI Frizette S. Oct. 8.
AShe is also at Crupi=s and I think she is a little ahead of the
schedule that Sweet Loretta is on. We will probably see her
around the same time, maybe a little bit earlier than Sweet
Loretta.@
! CHERRY LODGE (f, 2 Bernardini)
Gainesway Stable=s Cherry Lodge was named a ATDN Rising
Star@ following her debut graduation at Saratoga Aug. 7 (video)
and was third behind a pair of dead-heat winners in the
Spinaway a month later. The bay was last seen completing the
exacta in Belmont=s GIII Matron S. Oct. 16.
ACherry Lodge is also in Ocala and we expect her to go back
into training right after the beginning of the year as well.@

Down the Shedrow with Todd Pletcher cont.
! TAPWRIT (c, 2, Tapit)
Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Robert
LaPenta went to $1.2 million to acquire Tapwrit at the Fasig-
Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale last summer. Breaking out at the
start of his Saratoga debut Sept. 3, he finished 10th, but
rebounded to don cap and gown at Gulfstream Park West Nov. 6
and won the Pulpit S. in Hallandale last time Dec. 10 (video).
ATapwrit is doing great. He came out of his last race well. We
are leaning towards going back to two turns with him next time,
so that kind of eliminates the [one-mile] Mucho Macho Man [S.
Jan. 7], but aside from that we haven=t really locked in on a
particular race. Everything is in play from Oaklawn to the Fair
Grounds to Tampa and even the Holy Bull. Some of it will depend
on travel arrangements and those kind of things, such as how
available the flights are. He is doing really well and will be
showing up hopefully in one of those stakes next time.@
! SONIC MULE (c, 2, Distorted Humor)
A first-out winner at Monmouth this summer, Calumet Farm=s
Sonic Mule completed the trifecta in the GII Saratoga Special in
August and filled that spot again back in Oceanport in the
Sapling S. Sept. 4. Second in the Armed Forces S. at Gulfstream
Oct. 1, the bay captured an allowance at Gulfstream West Nov.
3 and took the Buffalo Man S. back in Hallandale Dec. 10.
AHe is either going to the [GIII] Hutcheson [S. Jan. 7] or the
Mucho Macho Man. We will play it by ear and see how he trains,
but we are pointing for Jan. 7.@
JERKENS DUO PREP FOR NEXT STARTS Stronach Stables and trainer Jimmy Jerkens have two exciting
prospects set to race at Gulfstream in Shaman Ghost
(Ghostzapper), who is pointing for the $12-million GI Pegasus
World Cup Jan. 28, and
Delta Prince (Street Cry
{Ire}), a half-brother to
champion Royal Delta
(Empire Maker) who will
make his turf debut
Monday.
Shaman Ghost, winner
of this term=s

first breeze since a third place finish in the Nov. 25 GI Clark H. at

Jerkens Duo Prep for Next Starts cont.
AThe work was good,@ Jerkens remarked. AI wasn=t looking for
anything more than that at this stage. I don=t have his work
schedule planned down to the minute, but we=ll have him as
ready as we can [for the Pegasus], that is for sure.@
As for his thoughts on Shaman Ghost=s Clark performance,
Jerkens said, AI thought it was better than it looked on paper. I
thought the track was pretty
speed-biased that day. He made
a nice run around the turn, but
he was losing ground and they
weren=t going fast enough up
ahead of him to tire in front of
him. When he saw that he got a
little disappointed and it looked
like he was going to fall out of it,
but then he kept going to finish
third and I thought that was
great. It=s always a good sign
when they come back on like
that.@
The regally-bred 3-year-old Delta Prince schooled in the
Gulfstream paddock Thursday in preparation for his turf debut
in the Hallandale oval=s eighth race Monday.
AA dirt race in New York didn=t go and this is the first maiden
race for him since we got to Florida,@ Jerkens commented. AHis
mother was turf and he worked nice on it. I just wanted to get
him going. Too much time between starts makes it hard to
develop a horse.@
The dark bay hit the board in his first two outings on the main
track in New York, most recently finishing second in a Nov. 12
test at Aqueduct.
AHe ran really green the first time,@ Jerkens said. AI think the
jockey may have tried to overdo it by rating him and then he spit
the bit out all together and then he came on a little bit at the
end. The next start he ran good; he just hung a little bit. The
track was really slow that day. He looked like he was going to get
there, but he stayed where he was. I thought he had a little
license that day to get tired.@
Delta Prince will be receiving Lasix for the first time Monday
and has drawn post 12.
AThe post is terrible, but what are you going to do about it?
You have to deal with it,@ Jerkens remarked. AI don=t want to gun
him out of there because if you do that you give up ground
anyway. We=ll probably look to ease him back a little and tuck
in.@
DIVISIDERO POINTING TO FORT LAUDERDALE Gunpowder Farms= Grade I winner Divisidero (Kitten=s Joy) is
aiming towards a 2017 debut in Gulfstream=s GII Fort Lauderdale
S. Jan. 24. The GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic hero was last
seen finishing fifth to Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in Belmont=s
GI Woodford Reserve
Manhattan S. June 11.
AHe=s doing well,@ trainer
Buff Bradley said. AWe
know he likes this track.
We=re hoping to make the
Fort Lauderdale.@
An eye-catching debut
winner in Hallandale last
term, Divisidero=s record
at Gulfstream stands at
4-1-1-2.
Bradley is also preparing lightly-raced sophomore The Player
(Street Hero), who he co-owns with Carl Hurst and bred with
Hurst and his late father Fred Bradley. A two-time winner at
Churchill this summer, the chestnut was last seen finishing
second to Cupid (Tapit) in the GII Indiana Derby July 16.
AWe=re hoping to get a start for him in February. He won=t be
ready until then,@ said Bradley. AHe=s really come around. We
always knew he could run a little bit. I gave him some time after
the Indiana Derby, but he=s back in full swing now. He=ll probably
be back to breezing before long.@
STELLAR WIND BACK ON TRACK Champion Stellar Wind (Curlin) returned to the track Thursday
morning for the first time since finishing fourth to Beholder
(Henny Hughes) in the Nov. 4 GI Breeders= Cup Distaff. The
chestnut will target the
GI Santa Margarita S. Mar. 18
for her 2017 debut.
AWe freshened her up but
didn=t turn her out,@ said John
Sadler. AShe=s back and
looking great and we=ll see if
she makes the Santa
Margarita.@
Runner-up to Beholder in
the GI Vanity Mile S. in her
2016 bow June 4, Stellar Wind bested the three-time Eclipse
winner in both the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. July 30 and the
GI Zenyatta S. Oct. 1 prior to her effort in the Distaff.

Grade I winner Rachel=s
Valentina (Bernardini).
Jess=s Dream=s maiden
victory at Saratoga was
one of the most-talked-about performances that year. He was
tremendously talented, and we expected him to be a Grade I
winner like everything else in the family.@
Banke added, AOcala Stud does a fantastic job of developing
top sires in Florida, and we are committed to giving Jess=s Dream
the support needed to make him a successful sire.@
Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Jess=s Dream made just one
start last summer at Saratoga, earning ATDN Rising Star@ honors
after unleashing a wide late rally to win by a length after a slow
start. The 4-year-old retires with a record of 1-1-0-0 and
earnings of $49,800.
AJess=s Dream truly had unlimited potential,@ said McLaughlin.
AHe ran as good as a horse could run first-time out at Saratoga,
and there=s no question he had top-class talent. We certainly
didn=t see the best of him. The sky was the limit.@
Out of dual Eclipse winner and multimillionaire Rachel
Alexandra, Jess=s Dream is a half-brother to fellow ATDN Rising
Star@ and GI Spinaway S. winner Rachel=s Valentina (Bernardini).
AWe=ve been standing stallions for a long time, and there
hasn=t been a better-pedigreed horse in Florida than Jess=s
Dream,@ said O=Farrell. AWe are grateful to Stonestreet for the
opportunity to stand another exciting stallion prospect. They
have one of the best operations in the entire industry, and they
do a fantastic job of supporting their stallions. We=ve had
tremendous fortune together with Kantharos and making him
into a leading sire, and I=m confident we=ll have success with
Jess=s Dream. Breeders are going to like him when they come
out to see him.@
Jess=s Dream is now available for inspection at Ocala Stud.
CHAMPION TURKOMAN EUTHANIZED AT
AGE 34 Turkoman (Alydar--Taba {Arg}, by Table Play), champion older
horse of 1986 and successful sire, was euthanized due to the
infirmities of old age Dec. 21 at E.A. Ranches in Ramona,
California, Our Mims Retirement Haven announced Thursday.
The pensioned stallion was 34.
On the racetrack, Turkoman won 8 of his 22 starts and banked
total earnings of $2,146,924. Trained by Gary Jones, the dark
bay finished second
in the GI Travers S.
and GI Swaps S. and
third in the GI
Breeders= Cup Classic
at Aqueduct as a
sophomore in 1985.
After wrapping up
the season with a
score in Hollywood=s
GIII Affirmed H., he
matured into a vastly
improved horse at the age of four, capturing the GI Widener H.,
GI Marlboro Cup H. and GII Oaklawn H. Second in the GI Jockey
Club Gold Cup in October, Turkoman was retired following a
runner-up effort behind Skywalker (Relaunch) in the Breeders=
Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Lady=s Secret (Secretariat) won Horse
of the Year in 1986, but Turkoman successfully secured
championship honors in the handicap division.

Turkoman Euthanized cont.
Turkoman began his stallion career at Darby Dan Farm before
eventually relocating to California. Pensioned in 2008, he sired
34 stakes winners, including Peruvian champion Captain Garfio
and Grade I winners Turk Passer and Man From Wicklow. His
greatest influence, however, came as a sire of broodmares.
Turkoman=s daughter Turko=s Turn is the dam of 2001 Horse of
the Year Point Given (Thunder Gulch), and he is also the damsire
of Grade I winners and sires Hard Spun (Danzig) and Colonel
John (Tiznow).
Officially retired with the help of Our Mims and the families of
owners Corbin and Wilhelmina Robertson following the partial
disbandment of his syndicate shareholders, he lived out the rest
of his years at E.A. Ranches. Turkoman=s remains will be buried
alongside his dam Taba, and his half-sister, Taba=s Dance at Our
Mims=s Kentucky base.
AThe great Turkoman may be gone from the Earth, but his
blood flows through the veins of many,@ said Our Mims=s Jeanne
Mirabito. AHe will never be forgotten.@

BEYER, CRIST TO RECEIVE ECLIPSE AWARDS Andrew Beyer and Steven Crist will each receive the Eclipse
Award of Merit for a lifetime of outstanding achievement in
Thoroughbred racing, it was announced by the National
Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Thursday. The honors
will be given out at the 46th Annual Eclipse Awards dinner and
ceremony Jan. 21 at Gulfstream Park.
Beyer, now semi-retired after nearly a 40-year-career as racing
writer and columnist at The Washington Post, is an author of
best-selling books on handicapping
and the creator of the groundbreaking
Beyer Speed Figures. Crist, who
retired this year, was racing writer for
The New York Times, a racetrack
executive, and served as publisher of
both The Racing Times and Daily
Racing Form.
AI am thrilled to learn that Andy
Beyer and Steve Crist have each been
selected to receive the Eclipse Award
of Merit,@ said Charles Hayward,
former president and CEO of both the Daily Racing Form and
New York Racing Association. ABeyer and Crist shared a vision of
the importance of advocating on behalf of the betting public.
Their collective, sustained efforts in this area resulted in policy
changes that have improved the interests of the wagering
customers, which ultimately improves the entire racing
industry.@
Beyer spent the bulk of his journalistic career covering racing
for the Washington Post and became well-known as an advocate
of the horseplayer.
Beyer=s first book on handicapping, APicking Winners,@ in 1975,
explained the basics of handicapping to the novice player, and
became a nationwide bestseller. A significant part of the book
was the introduction and explanation of speed figures as a
breakthrough method in analyzing horses= chances of a top
performance. These figures would go on to spawn a
handicapping industry.
AI am very gratified by it,@ said Beyer upon learning of his
Award. AI really believe that over the last 25 years, our speed

NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR:
As part of our ongoing series, Challenges and Solutions, we
asked for feedback from our audience. The first of the replies
appear here:
KEVIN STEPHENS, Stallion Manager, Sequel Stallions, New
York.
What is the most pressing problem that needs to be tackled in
racing, and how would you solve it?
I am a native lifetime Kentucky horseman who now is the
stallion manager at Sequel Stallions in New York. I feel our
biggest problem facing our industry is
trouble filling positions with
experienced staff. Let's face it, the
horse business is not easy work on a
day-to-day basis. Our backbone of our
workforce continues to grow older
and filling the openings they leave
behind is a hard process. Who among
us have not ran ads only to be
bombarded with people who may be
willing, but do not have the experience required. We need
people like these. These are the people we can teach and
educate as they grow into experienced employees. The
downside is that the people who are there to do the teaching
are growing older and sometimes pushed out of the way by the
younger generation. We as a industry need to do all we can to
educate, employ, and retain a younger generation of horseman
while at the same time respecting our experienced help.
What do you think somebody from the outside looking in--
somebody not involved in racing--would say the problem that
most needs solving is?
I believe the biggest problem in our industry from a outsider=s
view would be abandoned and abused horses. As a whole the
industry is very supporting of rehoming and retraining of
Thoroughbreds after their days at the track are over.
Regretfully, a lot of people outside the business see is only what
the media shows them. Stories of abandoned horses pull at all
of our heart strings. One thing about the thoroughbred industry
is that we are fast to rally to a solution and it is usually well
supported by all. Cont. p14

Challenges and Solutions cont.
JONATHAN STETTIN, Writer and publisher of the weekly racing
column, APast the Wire@.
What is the most pressing problem that needs to be tackled in
racing, and how would you solve it?
The need for a central governing body in our sport is essential.
This ties into many of our other issues and can be the road to
solutions. We need uniformity in rules, and equal enforcement
of them. We need transparency, and we need to prioritize three
core issues: safety and treatment of our horses, while racing and
afterwards; safety of riders, including exercise riders; and the
integrity of our game. This starts with one central organization,
made up not of political appointees, but people from all areas of
our game, including the fans and bettors, and of course actual
horsemen. I always hear the multi-state laws and jurisdictions
prevent this. I don't buy that argument. All other major sports
are played in multiple states, yet they all have one set of rules,
and a commissioner or board and uniformed leadership. We
can't tackle drugs, aftercare of our horses, safety and protection
of our riders if every racetrack and state wants to do it their own
way. I'd install a process of voting a regulatory board with
representatives from all areas of the sport. I'd have the board
vote on a commissioner. There has to be leadership to
accomplish anything.
What do you think somebody from the outside looking in--
somebody not involved in racing--would say the problem that
most needs solving is?
I have to say this is a two-part answer, each of equal
importance. The first thing is the perception of how we treat our
horses. Many people think racing in and of itself is wrong and
cruel to horses. They do not understand the breed's
competitiveness and they are for the most part doing what they
love. We have to change that perception by educating the public
and promoting that horses love to compete as athletes, and that
we take care of them on the track and after they finish racing.
Cheating, and the running of unsound, medicated horses ties
right into this, as it is hard to make my first argument when this
is going on. This is why in part I am anti-raceday medication. If a
horse is not sound enough to race without medical aid, perhaps
they shouldn't be racing. Most people I speak with who are
unfamiliar with the sport assume it is cruel to the horses, and a
large majority of them are drugged. We have to address this to
restore our game to what it was and can be again.
RMTC URGES ADOPTION OF ARCI RULES The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) has
urged racing authorities to adopt the Out of Competition Testing
and Multiple Medication Violation rules approved by the
Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) at its
Dec. 9 board meeting in Tucson, Arizona.
The new ARCI regulations go beyond blood doping to regulate
a number of other substances, including a ban of the use of
anabolic steroids in training unless they are prescribed by a
veterinarian. They also include strict reporting requirements for
other substances, such as clenbuterol, that act as anabolic
agents; and a broadly expanded prohibited substance list based
upon the World Anti-Doping Agency=s Prohibited Substance list.
AThe Out of Competition Testing rule is vital for ensuring the
integrity of racing and the health and welfare of our equine
athletes,@ said RMTC Executive Director Dr. Dionne Benson.
AThere are a number of substances that can only be found for a
limited time. Expanding out of competition testing will allow
racing authorities to test for those substances and ultimately
deter their use.@
The Multiple Medication Violation (MMV) system was
designed to be an enhanced penalty system applied above and
beyond the penalty for a single medication violation for trainers
who commit multiple medication-related infractions. The RMTC
helped to revise the MMV penalty system to address issues that
had arisen and concerns expressed by many states where legal
concerns hampered adoption. Highlights of the revision include
increased discretion for stewards in determining the length of a
suspension and an increasing penalty for therapeutic medication
violations occurring within the same year.
Industry organizations and states that have been slow to
support the National Uniform Medication Program have
indicated that these revisions remove a significant obstacle to
full adoption.
AThe RMTC stands ready to assist racing authorities in the
adoption of these regulations,@ said RMTC Chair Alex Waldrop.
AAdoption of these programs along with the National Uniform
Medication Program in its entirety will be chief among the
RMTC=s objectives for 2017.@

GRAND NATIONAL WINNERJOHN BUCKINGHAM DIES
John Buckingham, rider of 1967 Aintree Grand National winner
Foinavon has died aged 76. Buckingham steered Foinavon to
one of the most eventful Grand National victories as the 100-1
shot managed to avoid a huge melee of horses at the fence after
Bechers Brook caused by the refusal of a loose horse.
Buckingham, who was well adrift at the time, safely weaved a
path through the confusion and was left with an unassailable
lead of up to a furlong as some of the other runners negotiated
their way back into the race. The obstacle where the carnage
ensued was later named the Foinavon fence. Upon retiring from
the saddle Buckingham became a jockey=s valet, a job he
undertook for thirty years until retiring in 2001. Paying tribute,
trainer Brendan Powell, who also rode a Grand National winner
tweeted, ASad to hear of the passing of John Buckingham.
Looked after me from my first ride to my last. A father figure to
us all. A gentleman. RIP.@
HEFTY BAN FOR MCDONALD Having left such a lasting impression when riding in Britain
earlier this year jockey James McDonald now faces the prospect
of eighteen months on the sidelines having been found guilty of
placing a A$1,000 bet on Astern (Aus) (Medaglia=d=Oro) when
the Godolphin colt made a winning debut under the jockey at
Randwick just over a year ago. McDonald was handed out the
ban by Racing NSW Stewards on Thursday after evidence
revealed that McDonald profited to the tune of A$4,000 from
the bet that had been placed by Anthony Gardiner. McDonald
had landed the coveted role as first jockey to Godolphin in
Australia back in March 2015 but his employers not surprisingly
have ended their current arrangement with the 24-year-old
New Zealand born rider. In a statement over the ban Sheikh
Mohammed and his team outlined their position.

SUCCESSFUL START FOR CROWLEY Britain=s Champion Jockey Jim Crowley got his new partnership
with Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum off to the perfect start when
winning on Naseem (Ire) (Sea
The Stars {Ire}) at Chelmsford
on Thursday, his first ride for
his new boss. "A lovely start,@
said Crowley. AWhen I saw
the draw, 16 of 16, I thought
we might be in a bit of
trouble, but the horse broke
very fast and I was able to get
into a nice rhythm. He was
dropping back to a mile from a mile and a quarter and he stayed
that trip very well,@ Crowley added of the John Gosden trained
2-year-old who was a 450,000gns foal purchase at Tattersalls in
2014.
Looking ahead to his New Year schedule Crowley continued, AI
leave for Dubai on January 2. Over the winter I'll try to do as
much homework as I can and try to find out which horses I want
to be on." Richard Hills, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan,
added, "It's a nice winner on the first day. It shows you've got a
bit of luck on your side. I'm going over to Dubai with Jim. I'll
introduce him to all the trainers and to Sheikh Hamdan and
show him the ropes."

TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 4 OF 6 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 23 DECEMBER, 2016
Over the next week the team of Editors of
TDN Europe/International will look back on 2016 and pick their
most memorable racing moment of the year.
We begin with International Editor, Kelsey Riley
WINX, G1 DONCASTER MILE, AUSTRALIA Anyone who has
experienced racing in
Australia knows that Down
Under, they embrace their
stars like perhaps nowhere
else. I was fortunate
enough to be living and
working in Australia at the
height of Black Caviar=s
career, and thus when the
bay filly Winx (Aus) (Street
Cry {Ire}) began to shape as a potential superstar in the same ilk
last year, I began to take notice. A near five-length romp
cemented Winx=s status as a world-class racehorse last October,
and as her win streak continued through the Australian autumn
earlier this year, my anticipation began to build about the
possibility of getting to witness a Winx win in person at The
Championships in April. Sure enough, Winx was signed on for
the G1 Doncaster Mile on the first day of the meeting, and I too
was signed on for an assignment at the races and the Easter
sales.
An absolute travel nightmare ensued (for the reporter, Winx=s
preparations thankfully were said to be smooth), and I landed in
Sydney a day late, on the morning of the race, luggage-less.
Now, anyone who has experienced racing in Australia will also
know it is under no circumstances acceptable to attend a
metropolitan meeting anything less than totally decked out, and
here I was in the same clothes I=d been wearing for two days,
through three airports, with not even a hairbrush. So I
desperately ran around Sydney and, in the space of about two
hours, bought myself an entire new outfit--and dashed into a
couple of salons--so I could be seen fit to get into the races. I
was sure glad I did; Winx won the race with her now trademark
authority, her ninth straight win, and nearly brought down the
Royal Randwick grandstand (video). She has now extended her
streak to 13, with most recently a scarcely believable eight-
length defense of the Cox Plate, and I have hopes of seeing the
great mare back at The Championships in 2017 in the G1 Queen
Elizabeth S. Hopefully without all the pre-race drama.
McDonald Banned cont. from p1
In a statement over the ban Sheikh Mohammed and his team
outlined their position by saying, AGodolphin agrees that there
must be zero tolerance of any breaches of the prohibition on
betting by a jockey.
Godolphin has advised James
McDonald that, as he is
disqualified, he will be
released from his current
contract with immediate
effect. This decision has been
accepted by James. We will
continue to support him
throughout his suspension.
His long term future with Godolphin will be reviewed in due
course by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed.@
Speaking to Racing.com McDonald himself commented on his
current situation and his plans to seek leniency over the verdict.
"I made an error of judgement betting on Astern when I rode it
and broke a rule of racing. I accept full responsibility for that.
But I am extremely disappointed with the penalty and I will be
appealing. I will be back riding, and hopefully sooner than later.
It is not appropriate that I say anything else until the appeal is
over."
SHADWELL FILLY ON COURSE FOR CLASSIC Madeenaty (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus},) a A$775,000
yearling purchase at Magic Millions in January continued her
progression with a smart display
in the A$200,000 Wyong Magic
Millions 2YO on Thursday. The
Shadwell Australasia owned filly
is now firmly on target for the
A$2-million Jeep Magic Millions
2YO Classic next month following
her narrow win over Single
Bullet (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt
{Aus}). Madeenaty is trained by the Hayes/Dabernig partnership
at Lindsay Park in Victoria and co-trainer Ben Hayes told Racing
And Sports after the race, AWe=ll take her home to Lindsay Park
where we can keep a close eye on her. Cont. p5

Hayes continued, AWe=ll give her all her work at home before
we fly her to the Gold Coast on the Monday before the race.
We've always had an opinion of her. She's got great gate speed
and that's a good asset for a two-year-old." Madeenaty is now
two wins from three starts having opened her account in a
Listed race on her debut at Flemington in October before
running third in the G3 Ottawa S. at the same course Nov. 1.
STAR TURN TO STAND AT VINERYby Alan Carasso
Star Turn (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}--Golden Delicious {Aus}, by
Made of Gold), a dual winner at Group level this season and a
latest third after setting the pace in the G1 Coolmore Stud S. at
Flemington Oct. 29, will stand at Vinery Stud upon completion of
his racing career. A deal was struck earlier this week with owner
Alan Bell, who will remain in the ownership group.
Consigned by Widden Stud to the 2015 Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale, Star Turn was purchased for A$400,000 and
turned over to the
training triumvirate of
Team Hawkes. A maiden
winner at second asking,
the flashy chestnut colt
was runner-up to Flying
Artie (Aus) (Artie
Schiller) in the G3 Blue
Diamond Prelude S.
(C&G) and was beaten
just 3 1/2 lengths behind
Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) in the G1 Golden Slipper
S. Spelled thereafter, Star Turn returned to win Rosehill=s G3 San
Domenico S. first-up and added a dominating victory in the G2
Schillaci S. at Caulfield two starts later. He was defeated by less
than 1 1/2 lengths by Flying Artie and favored Astern (Aus)
(Medaglia d=Oro) in the Coolmore.
AWe=re delighted to have secured Star Turn as a future stallion
for Vinery Stud and especially to be involved with his ongoing
racing,@ Vinery's General Manager Peter Orton said. AWe=ve
been tracking Star Turn since he was an early 2-year-old and he
was the colt we rated of the current crop to stand at Vinery. He
has pedigree, performance and physique, all essential qualities
we look for in a stallion, to add to the success of our
broodmares and the future of the farm.@
Added Team Hawkes=s John Hawkes: AStar Turn is a brilliant
athlete capable of superb on-pace speed,@ John Hawkes said this
week. ANatural development and progression would suggest
he=s in for an exciting campaign ahead.@
Star Turn is the most successful produce for his dam, a Group
3 winner in Western Australia as late as her 6-year-old season in
2004. Golden Delicious, who passed away in 2015, is
represented by Star Turn=s 2-year-old full-sister Shufoog (Aus),
who fetched A$300,000 from Shadwell Australasia at last year=s
Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
MESSARA RESIGNS FROM RA John Messara, the chairman of Racing Australia, has resigned
from that body=s Board effective Jan. 1, 2017, the same date his
resignation from the board of Racing New South Wales takes
affect.
AThe last few years have constituted a period of significant
change in the structure of Racing Australia. It has been a time of
reform and
modernization of the
Australian
Thoroughbred Industry. I
feel privileged to have
served with an
exceptional Racing
Australia Board, CEO and
staff in achieving many
improvements for our
industry. I leave Racing
Australia imbued with confidence that the progress achieved
over the last few years will continue unabated.@ Mr Messara
said.
Frances Nelson, Deputy Chairman of the Racing Australia
Board, paid tribute to Mr Messara saying that he had been a
force for change.
AJohn has been intimately involved in bringing about most
significant administrative, integrity and animal welfare reforms
in recent history. John has made a lasting contribution and I
speak for all Directors when I say we will miss him for his
leadership, vision and dedication to racing and breeding.@
