ENABLE DOMINATESYORKSHIRE OAKS

Taking her one-woman show to York on Thursday, Khalid

Abdullah=s latest A-lister Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) was

understandably 1-4 for the G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks with a trio

of huge triumphs already behind her. While it is one thing being

that price on the formbook, it is another to perform consistently

as a cut above in this grade and the remarkable homebred made

it easy for connections and backers alike as she remained in a

domineering mood.

Frankie Dettori was unwilling to relinquish a yard of advantage

after she broke with trademark enthusiasm and with only

Queen=s Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in shouting distance

throughout she had a relatively straightforward task traversing

the Knavesmire with only the wide expanse in front of her. At

the line, she was able to enjoy a familiar five-length winning

cushion back to another hard-working runner-up, which this

time was her stablemate and fellow 3-year-old Coronet (GB)

(Dubawi {Ire}).

AShe got a bit bored at the end and I felt I had something left if

something had come to me,@ her rider commented. AIf you try

and keep up with her, she=ll break your lungs--she is a very

competitive filly. So far, she=s one of the best I=ve ridden and she

will go to the Arc with a favourite=s chance. I=ll wait until the Arc

to say whether she=s the best.@

Following Wednesday=s G1 Juddmonte International, Enable=s

reputation was continuing skywards as the older colt she put

4 1/2 lengths into in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

S. was beating up the best of the 3-year-old members of his sex.

Whatever the ground conditions at Ascot on July 29, it still takes

some mettle to distance a runner of the calibre of Ulysses (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}), especially coming just two weeks after a

commanding performance in a G1 Irish Oaks staged on an

unusually quick surface for The Curragh. Looking back to her

defeat of Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the May 10 Listed

Cheshire Oaks, it is hard to believe how much she has grown in

stature in just 15 weeks of action that has seen her prevail in a

total of four Oaks including the June 2 Epsom Classic where

Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was the first to feel her wrath.

Using Alluringly as a measurement of Enable=s progress, what

was a 1 3/4-length margin between them at Chester became 11

at Epsom, 12 1/2 at The Curragh and now 15 here.

With the memory of the shock eclipse of the stable=s Epsom

Oaks and King George heroine Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars

{Ire}) in this in 2014 still fresh, there must have been an element

of worry in John Gosden=s mind despite all the evidence

suggesting Enable was home and hosed. Dettori was refusing to

entertain any notion of an upset and his positivity from the

outset fed back to the beautiful specimen he wrenched himself

back into action for after his injury in June. By the end of the

home turn, it was not yet clear that Queen=s Trust was a spent

force and for a few strides the Cheveley Park homebred >TDN

Rising Star= looked as if she could strike a blow, but that proved

ultimately short-lived as Enable continued her remorseless drive

onwards. Last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine

Queen=s Trust paid late for being the closest pursuer to the

winner throughout and lost second to >TDN Rising Star= and G2

Ribblesdale S. winner Coronet, who ran a fine trial for the St

Leger if connections opt to go that way.

G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks Cont.

In her four successes at the highest level, which boast a

cumulative margin of 20 lengths, Enable has put to the sword a

total of 10 individual Group 1 winners and it is difficult to

envisage any of the Europeans stopping her in the G1 Prix de

l=Arc de Triomphe, in which she gets a generous weight-for-age

and sex allowance. The unknown quantity Satono Diamond (Jpn)

(Deep Impact {Jpn}) and stablemate Cracksman (GB) (Frankel

{GB}) aside, the bay looks to have the measure of everything

else and Gosden only has to keep her ticking over between now

and then.

AShe got a little bit lonely, but she=s done it beautifully,@ he

said. AIt=s proved she can do it from the front as well. She=s

somewhat special and I think at a mile and a half is the best filly

I=ve ever trained. She would look Golden Horn in the eye and I

don=t know who=d win. She has worked on her own at times, but

has never led a piece of work in her life. No one wanted to make

the running and so that worked well, but Frankie said she

needed something to come to her. She=s got a load of ability and

when they have that there is no point in wrestling them--you

need to let them do their own thing.@

Gosden revealed the pressure he had felt beforehand. AWe

had a lot to lose coming here--you all remember a horse called

Taghrooda--but we let her use her stride and she has gone and

won by five lengths and she can=t do any more,@ he added. AMy

only worry with her was going from Ireland to the King George,

which was tight for me but Frankie came to sit on her in

between and she spotted a pigeon in the bushes and whipped

round and ditched him so that was a sign she was very full of

herself. She took the King George well and was again very

playful, so it would have been a shame for this fabulous meeting

and this great race if she hadn=t come here. Otherwise it would

have meant a racecourse gallop and the timing between this and

the Arc is lovely. We now have a nice two to three weeks of easy

and will let her down a little bit and then bring her back up for

Oct. 1. We don=t need to run her in the [G1] Prix Vermeille [at

Chantilly on Sept. 10], but the second might go there. Coronet

got lost in Ireland and didn=t enjoy herself, but that was much

more like it.@

G1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks Cont. Gosden also suggested that Enable could be around in 2018,although nothing has been discussed as yet. AHer owner-breeder=srecord proves that he really enjoys letting his horses race and I=llsay no more than that,@ he commented. AFrankie is very keenthat she races on next year and her father won an Eclipse andwas just beaten in a King George as a 4-year-old. It would bewonderful if she did, but that=s entirely the owner=s decision.@

Pedigree Notes... Enable=s dam Concentric was never tried over a mile and a halfby Andre Fabre despite her stout breeding and managed to winthe Listed Prix Charles Laffitte and finish runner-up in the G3Prix de Flore in 2007. That trainer also took charge of herdaughter Contribution, who was placed in last year=s G2 Prix dePomone and G3 Prix Allez France and he handled much of thefamily including all of Apogee=s black-type performers. Theyinclude the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon and G3 Prix du Chemin de Ferdu Nord-winning sire Apsis (GB) and the G2 Prix de Royallieuwinner and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB)(Sadler=s Wells), with the latter going on to throw the championFlintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Runner-up twice in the Arc, he wasone of a plethora of members of this dynasty who remained apotent force with age and experience and ended up championgrass horse in the U.S. when winning the GI Sword Dancer ontwo occasions and the GI Manhattan S. as well as the G1 GrandPrix de Paris and G1 Hong Kong Vase. Enable has already putright the Classic near-misses of her third dam Bourbon Girl inthe G1 English and Irish Oaks and has now gone two placesbetter than she had done in this race 30 years ago. This solidfamily also features the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly winner andG1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up Daring Miss (GB)(Sadler=s Wells), the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud-winning sireSpanish Moon and his full-sister Spanish Sun (El Prado {Ire}),who took the G2 Ribblesdale S. Concentric also has a 2-year-oldcolt by Dansili (GB) named Centroid (GB), a yearling filly also bythat sire and a filly foal by Frankel (GB).

LOWTHER TRIUMPH FOR THREADING Threading (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who registered an

impressive six-length score in an Aug. 2 Goodwood maiden in

her only prior start, justified a ,15,000 supplementary fee and

made the required leap to claim a decisive victory in Thursday=s

G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. at York. Bounding into second to track the

trailblazing Happy Like A Fool (Distorted Humor) after the initial

exchanges of this black-type bow, the 9-2 chance was stoked up

to close soon after halfway and kept on strongly once ridden by

that rival--whose saddle had slipped under Frankie Dettori--at

the eighth pole to account for Madeline (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) by

1 3/4 lengths, with Mamba Noire (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB})

3/4 of a length back in third.

AIt=s a bit early to tell if she is a [1000] Guineas filly,@ admitted

rider James Doyle. AShe is showing all the right signs and was

very impressive in deep ground at Goodwood. I rode one

yesterday that was an impressive winner there and he flopped

so it is hard to tell how much it takes out of them. She seems to

have come on nicely from that run and I was always comfortable

here. I didn=t want to give Frankie [Dettori] too much rope [on

Happy Like A Fool] and I got there a touch early, but she is a

typical one of Mark Johnston=s and toughed it out well. She rides

like an older horse and is very push-button. She jumped well, sat

a couple of lengths off the pace, eased into it and knuckled

down well late on. She is very professional.@

G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. Cont.

For trainer Mark Johnston, it was a first Lowther success and

improved his cold-list sequence of just one winner from 85

previous runners at the Knavesmire track.

AWe came here not knowing a lot about her, but, at the same

time, we wouldn=t have supplemented her if we thought she

wasn=t good enough,@ he said. AIt was only six days ago we

decided to take the plunge and thank goodness we did. I could

see all the way she was travelling well and I could see she was

the only one who really had the leader in her sights. She=s a

lovely, straightforward horse and has done nothing but please

us from day one. She pulled away at the finish and that bodes

well for the future. You=d start thinking about the [Sept. 30 G1]

Cheveley Park [S. at Newmarket] after that, but nothing has

been discussed and there=s no plan. She won on soft at

Goodwood and she=s won on soft again, but it=d be wrong to

pigeon-hole her and it would be very interesting to see her run

on better ground. I=d love to see what difference it makes to

her. She stayed the trip very well and the [1000] Guineas would

be in our minds. That=s the dream for the moment.@

Roger Varian, trainer of the runner-up Madeline, indicated his

charge=s outside draw in nine may have compromised her

winning chance and said, AShe ran very well, but didn=t have an

ideal draw and Andrea [Atzeni] wasn=t able to get any cover.

Because of that she raced enthusiastically and Andrea said that

if he had been able to get some cover it might have made a

difference, but we=re not saying she=d definitely have won. It

was a solid run and she went through the ground, but she=s

better on a quicker surface.@

The Newmarket conditioner also indicated a rematch with

Threading is on the cards at his local track and added, AI think

the Cheveley Park will suit her as that will be a stiff six furlongs

and this is more of a speed test. The uphill finish [at Newmarket]

should play to her strengths.@

Pedigree Notes... Threading, kin to a yearling filly by Slade Power (Ire), is the first

stakes scorer out of an unraced full-sister to UAE Horse of the

Year, European highweight and MG1SW sire Dubai Millennium

(GB) (Seeking the Gold). Her MGSW granddam Colorado Dancer

(Ire) (Shareef Dancer), a daughter of GI Matron S.-winning

Broodmare of the Year Fall Aspen (Pretense), is herself kin to

the sires Hamas (Ire) (Danzig), Bianconi (Danzig), Timber Country

(Woodman) and Fort Wood (Sadler=s Wells). She is also a sibling

of GI Gamely H. heroine Northern Aspen (Northern Dancer),

GI Kentucky Derby third Prince of Thieves (Hansel), GSW & G1

Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Mazzacano (Alleged) and G2 Prix

d=Astarte victress Elle Seule (Exclusive Native), whose own

descendants include G1 July Cup-winning sire Elnadim (Danzig),

G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Mehthaaf (Nureyev) and MG1SW

European highweight Occupandiste (Ire) (Kjaldoun {Fr}).

Occupandiste is herself dam of four stakes winners including GI

Arlington Million and GI Woodbine Mile hero Mondialiste (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}) and MG1SP G2 Prix de Sandringham victress

Impressionnante (GB) (Danehill).

LADY OF YORK Wesley Ward has a score to settle with the Knavesmire after

watching Acapulco (Scat Daddy) come unstuck against Mecca=s

Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the 2015 G1 Coolmore

Nunthorpe S. and with the ground drying all the time the

portents are strong for atonement courtesy of >TDN Rising Star=

Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) on Friday. Winning Royal Ascot=s G1

King=s Stand S. with magisterial ease when last seen on June 20,

Stonestreet Stables LLC and Peter Leidel=s 3-year-old has trained

perfectly towards this contest and jockey Frankie Dettori is

expecting big things.

AI think it was an almighty performance in the King=s Stand,@ he

said. AShe brushed aside some great older horses. She=s a typical

sprinter. She=s on her toes and she has two switches--slow and

fast. There=s nothing in between. Last year we tried really hard

to get her to run over six furlongs. We got away with it in the

Prix Morny, but for me five furlongs is ideal for her. I think York

will suit her, as she=s got tremendous speed and typically

American horses like a flat track. York might suit her better than

Ascot.@

G1 Nunthorpe S. Preview Cont.

This race has been teed up as a match after the impressive

G2 King George S. success of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al

Maktoum=s Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Building on wins at

Sandown in the June 17 Listed Scurry S. and July 8 G3 Sprint S.,

the vastly-improved flying machine had several of these behind

in that Aug. 4 Goodwood sprint including the Group 1 winners

Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Marsha (Ire)

(Acclamation {GB}).

Jim Crowley has already ridden a top-level winner at this

meeting and is hoping he can double up here. AHe=s not overly

big, but he=s just got such a high cruising speed,@ he said. AWhat

impressed me at Goodwood was the way he coped with the

ground, because there=s always a doubt in your mind when a

horse has got so much speed. He=d broken the track record at

Sandown the time before.@ Of Lady Aurelia, he added, AFillies

can be a little in and out, plus she has to cope with the travelling

backwards and forwards, but what she=s done so far has been

impressive. She=s a very fast filly and it=s going to be a great

race.@

Whether Marsha can reverse an emphatic beating in the King

George or even the King=s Stand, when she was again third when

Profitable was second, with Battaash and Lady Aurelia remains

to be seen but Elite Racing Club=s G1 Prix de l=Abbaye heroine is

still a force in this category and this track will suit her ideally.

AShe is very consistent, run in all the top sprints this year and

been placed every time,@ trainer Sir Mark Prescott said. AThe

Nunthorpe looks a marvellous race with some very, very fast

horses in it and she is entitled to be there, but Lady Aurelia and

Mr. Hills=s horse [Battaash] have both beaten her this year. They

have beaten her fair and square before but in sprints, tiny little

things make a big difference.@

Clive Cox again saddles Profitable and the May 27 G2 Temple

S. winner Priceless (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), with the

former holding the bragging rights after finishing well ahead of

his stablemate as she trailed in 12th and ninth in the King=s

Stand and King George respectively.

AProfitable is in great form and I=m really pleased with him,@

the trainer said. AI=d say Lady Aurelia is the one to be beat, but

we are four pounds better off with her compared to Ascot.@

Any Ballydoyle representative commands respect and despite

having been beaten by the main protagonists Washington DC

(Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) at least comes here off a confidence-

boosting win in the Listed Phoenix Sprint S. at The Curragh on

Aug. 13.

CUP PRACTICE York=s G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York serves as

a warm-up for the Melbourne Cup and with the Ricci-Mullins

axis having gone so close to glory in that Antipodean feature two

years ago there is much expectation surrounding Thomas

Hobson (GB) (Halling) here. Stablemate Max Dynamite (Fr)

(Great Journey {Jpn}) captured this en route to an agonising half-

length defeat at Flemington and Thomas Hobson has similar

credentials after winning the Ascot S. and finishing second in the

Queen Alexandra S. on the Tuesday and Saturday of Royal Ascot.

AHe ran two fantastic races at Ascot and almost completed the

Simenon double,@ trainer Willie Mullins=s son and assistant

Patrick Mullins said. AI suppose we are trying to make him into a

Melbourne Cup horse and he probably needs to go up a few

more pounds in the handicap and hopefully he can achieve that

with a good run at York. Dropping back in trip should not be a

problem, as he is quite versatile trip-wise.@ Cont. p7

Cup Practice Cont.

With The Queen=s Dartmouth (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) saddled with

a penalty after his success in the 14-furlong G2 Yorkshire Cup on

May 19, he could be vulnerable to an improver and one who fits

that bill is St Albans Bloodstock Limited=s Dal Harraild (GB)

(Champs Elysees {GB}). He was just 3/4 of a length behind

Dartmouth when they were fourth and sixth in the G2

Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot last time on June 24, but was

previously impressive when taking the Listed Grand Cup over a

mile and three quarters here on May 27.

AWe rode him wrong at Ascot, it was my fault,@ trainer William

Haggas said. AWe got sucked into running him because of the

ground and when we were drawn where we were we decided to

make the running. The trip was too short really, but this is his

trip and the ground will dry up nicely. He=s been crying out for

this trip for a year and now he finally gets the chance to run over

it. He=s a very good horse on his day.@

THREE IN THE MIX Withdrawn from Saturday=s G2 Hungerford S. due to the rain-

softened ground, a trio of group-winning fillies in Daban (Ire)

(Acclamation {GB}), Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus})

and Mix and Mingle (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) instead

square up in the G3 Sky Bet City of York S. on Thursday. The

former, who carries the colours of Abdullah Saeed Al Naboodah,

was third in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 7 in

between a win in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. over this trip there on

Apr. 19 and a sixth in Royal Ascot=s G3 Jersey S. on June 21.

Cheveley Park Stud=s Spangled is having her belated first start of

the season here, having signed off 2016 with success in the

G3 Sceptre S. over this trip at Doncaster in September, while

Mix and Mingle bids to bounce back from a 12th placing in the

G2 Duke of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot on June 21, having

previously captured the G3 Chartwell Fillies= S. at Lingfield at this

distance on May 13. >TDN Rising Star= Talaayeb (GB) (Dansili

{GB}) was 1 1/4 lengths behind Daban when fourth in the 1000

Guineas, which was a highly creditable effort on only her second

career start. While she was subsequently disappointing when

seventh in the Listed Ballymacoll Stud S. at Newbury on June 15,

her trainer Owen Burrows showed what he can do with good

horses coming back from a break when Massaat (Ire) (Teofilo

Off the mark over 10 furlongs at Salisbury May 18, Fleur

Forsyte was last of eight on her black-type bow in the Listed

Ballymacoll Stud S. also at that distance at Newbury June 15.

Brought back from that disappointing effort, the bay showed

marked improvement in a first-time hood when third in the

Listed Chalice S. over this trip at Newmarket Aug. 5 and took

another leap forward here as the favourite Mori (GB) (Frankel

{GB}) ran below expectations. Settled worse than mid-division

early by Daniel Muscutt, she was coaxed between rivals and into

the lead with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining and stayed on strongly

from More Mischief, with Aljezeera gaining some late

momentum having looked a forlorn hope in early straight.

Trainer James Fanshawe was relieved to see the filly he had

believed he had earlier in the season. AI always really liked her,

but she got very upset in the Newbury listed race I had won the

year before with Speedy Boarding and after that it was back to

square one,@ he explained. APhilippa [Cooper of Normandie

Stud] insisted on another listed race and so I put a hood on her

at Newmarket and this was the logical next step. She had to

improve, but she did work very well last Wednesday. She hit the

front early enough, but Daniel [Muscutt] said the race collapsed

in front of him. She didn=t have much experience and so was

vulnerable, but she saw the trip out very well. She=s settling

better now and she is in at Ascot on Champions Day [in the Oct.

21 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S.] and the [Sept.

30 G2] Prix de Royallieu [at Chantilly]. It=s great to win Sir

Henry=s race. We all miss him a lot on the gallops.@

The dam is a half to the Listed Conqueror S. winner and G1

Coronation S. and G2 Sun Chariot S.-placed Dolores (GB)

(Danehill), who is herself responsible for four black-type

performers including the G1 Irish St Leger dead-heater Duncan

(GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) who also won the G2 Yorkshire Cup and

G2 Prix Foy, the G2 Doncaster Cup scorer Samuel (GB) (Sakhee)

and G2 Park Hill S. winner Gretchen (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). From

the family of the G2 Sun Chariot S. scorer Talented (GB) (Bustino

{GB}) and her Classic-placed son Carlton House (Street Cry {Ire}),

she has a yearling colt by Raven=s Pass who will be offered as lot

1624 during Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Sale. Click for the

TANGLED (IRE) (c, 2, Society Rock {Ire}--Open Verse, by Black

Minnaloushe), who shed maiden status in a seven-furlong

Newmarket nursery handicap last time July 14, was handily

placed in the second rank of the far-side group after an alert

getaway in this Goffs Premier Yearling contest. Making ominous

headway from halfway, the 15-2 chance was stoked up to seize

an opening and a narrow advantage entering the final furlong

and kept on in game fashion under a late drive to prevail by a

neck from G2 Superlative S. third Great Prospector (Ire) (Elzaam

{Aus}). AHe came here in good form, I was happy enough where

he was drawn and happy enough how it worked out on our side

of the track,@ said rider Sean Levey. AI was a little worried about

dropping back to six furlongs, but he did it well in the end.@

O=BRIEN APPOINTED PLUSVITAL BRAND

AMBASSADOR Australian Group 1-winning trainer Danny O=Brien will

represent Irish equine science company Plusvital as a brand

ambassador, the genetics company announced Thursday. The

company=s genetic tests for Thoroughbred horses provide

objective, scientific information to support breeding, training

and race entry decisions.

AWe=re very excited to develop this new partnership with

Plusvital,@ said O=Brien, who used genetic testing to route

subsequent Group 1 winner Shamexpress (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) to

sprint distances. AWe view the genetic testing technology

offered by Plusvital as another outstanding layer of information

that a trainer can use when assessing a horse. Shamexpress=s

pedigree suggested he would be a Derby horse, but thanks to

genetic testing, I pinpointed early in his career that he was a

sprinter and this information enabled us to abort running him in

longer races and focus his attention on the shorter races.@

GROUP 1-WINNING RIDER DIES South African jockey Alec Forbes died suddenly on Thursday

just hours after riding a winner at Scottsville, according to

published reports. According to Racing Post, the 41-year-old had

complained to fellow riders about feeling unwell, and began

vomiting during the evening. He went to hospital where it was

discovered he had pneumonia. He ultimately died of organ

failure.

Forbes rode over 800 winners and won seven Group 1 races,

including two aboard sprinter Val De Ra (SAf) (Var), the dam of

Wednesday Scottsville maiden winner Miss Frankel (SAf)

(Frankel {GB}), the first winner for her sire in that country.

>FANTAISIE= LOOKING FOR FIVE STRAIGHT

AT KRANJI by Alan Carasso

Chopins Fantaisie (NZ) (Pins {Aus}), the full-brother to former

Hong Kong Horse of the Year Ambitious Dragon (NZ), returns to

action in Friday=s seventh race at Kranji Racecourse, a Class 3

test over 1400m as he looks to remain perfect in five career

trips to the post.

The son of Golden Gamble (NZ) (Oregon), purchased by trainer

Michael Clements for NZ$150,000 out of the 2015 NZB Premier

Yearling Sale, kicked off his career with a cosy tally over the local

Polytrack and has since rattled off three more wins on turf,

including a half-length success in a BM67 in which he outbattled

the filly Aotearoa (NZ) (Sakhee=s Secret {GB}) by a hard-fought

half-length (video). Chopins Fantaisie has never started at odds

longer than 9-5 while favoured in each of his four runs and that

streak is certain to continue Friday evening. The bay gelding

tuned up for this test with a quiet fourth in a barrier trial over

the Poly Aug. 15 (video).

Should he come through Friday=s effort in good order, Chopins

Fantaisie is tentatively scheduled to make his stakes debut in the

Committee=s Prize (1600m) Sept. 17 en route to the Raffles Cup

(1800m) Oct. 22.

AThe aim is to run him in the Committee=s Prize which is a

handicap race,@ Clements said following Chopins Fantaisie=s

most recent trial. AHe needs to pick up a few rating points and

I=m sure there=ll be a few low-rated horses like him that will also

get into that. Depending on how he runs and how he pulls up,

then we will set him for the Raffles Cup.@

Glen Boss has the return call for Friday=s seventh race on an

eight-race program. Post time is set for 9:50 p.m.

PINHOOK COULD PROVIDEYAGODA WITH FIRST

GRADE I SCORE

By Christie DeBernardis

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Aron Yagoda will be the first to tell

you that he doesn=t keep any of his horses long enough for them

to carry his purple and white silks to a graded stakes score. The

longtime owner prefers to claim and resell after a couple of

races or pinhook.

However, it is Yagoda=s resale policy that has connected him to

a Grade I contender Saturday in GII Woody Stephens S. victor

American Anthem (Bodemeister), who will be one of the

favorites in the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. (formerly the King=s

Bishop).

ATom McGreevy picks my pinhooks and my partners [Jon and

Len Green of DJ Stables] and I bought him for $180,000 from

Book 1 of Keeneland September,@ said Yagoda, while watching

horses work over the Saratoga main track Thursday morning.

AWe made a list of sires and what we thought we would pay for

them. Bodemeisters were very popular at the sales and we had

a limit for his foals of $200,000. I try to stay away from a lot of

the bubble sires for pinhooking at the higher dollar level. I try to

stay with either the proven sires or first-year sires that have a

lot of hype behind them.@

GEORGIA ON THEIR MIND--WITH OR

WITHOUT A TRACK by T.D. Thornton

Two of the executive officers of the Georgia Horse Racing

Coalition (GHRC) readily acknowledge that the decades-long

push to get pari-mutuel wagering legalized in the conservative

Peach State once again faces long odds during the 2018

legislative session. Yet the daunting proposition hasn=t stopped

Tom Schulte and John AJack@ Damico from starting up a small

Thoroughbred breeding and racing operation 50 miles north of

Atlanta just in case.

The two Georgia-based Thoroughbred boosters have had little

difficulty enticing local friends and business acquaintances to

buy into the initial partnership shares they offered earlier this

year on an auction-acquired crop of three yearlings and two

broodmares. Nor, they said, is it hard to sell civic leaders on the

visually stunning Aracetrack of the future@ design the GHRC

commissioned from a renowned sports architecture firm that

integrates a sleek, modern, horse-racing facility within a

bustling, mixed-use, verdant public space. Cont. p4 (click here)

American Anthem | Christie DeBernardis

Yagoda cont. from p1

Out of a half-sister to champion Banshee Breeze and from the

first-crop of 2012 GI Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister,

American Anthem sold to breeder WinStar Farm and China

Horse Club for $435,000 at the OBS March sale after breezing in

:10 1/5.

AHe was the most expensive horse [consignor] Pat Hoppel ever

sold,@ Yagoda said. AI thought we would be in the $300,000

range, but he became one of the now horses at the sale. He was

vetted 17 times, which is actually much more [than it appears],

as the different vets represent multiple clients.@

The New York native continued, AThe day of the sale, he had a

little bit of a belly ache and he came off of a lot of people=s lists.

We bought him from WinStar and WinStar with China Horse

Club actually bought him back. After the sale, we kept him for

two weeks and got him right, then WinStar honored their sale

and the rest is history for them.@

A debut winner at Del Mar for

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert in

December, American Anthem

finished a close second behind

MGISW Gormley (Malibu Moon)

in the GIII Sham S. next out Jan. 7.

Going a bit off form when

stretched out for the GII Rebel S.

and GI Santa Anita Derby this

spring, the dark bay rebounded

when cut back in trip for the

GIII Lazaro Barrera S., coasting

home to a 1 3/4-length victory

May 13, and followed suit with a

decisive score in the Woody

Stephens at Belmont last time

June 10.

ATom picks a lot of good horses [including two-time champion

Songbird (Medaglia d=Oro)] and he is my closest friend,@ Yagoda

said. AAny of those can turn out to be good and it happened to

be him in this case.@

Under McGreevy=s guidance, Yagoda and his partners

purchase eight to 10 yearlings per year and resell them at the

2-year-old sales the following spring, preferring to stay in the

$200,000 or less price range.

AI try to start at the Keeneland sale,@ Yagoda said. AThe bigger

catalogues give me a better chance to find something for a good

bargain. It is hard to do that at Fasig July or Saratoga where

every horse is being looked at multiple times.@

He continued, AThey are all there to sell, but sometimes they

don=t. After OBS June, you run out of sales and then you have to

sell privately, which is tough, or sell on the racetrack. None of

them are bought with the intent to end up in either of our silks.@

If a pinhooking prospect does not sell, Yagoda will keep it and

race it with the hope of selling it later. He currently has 15

horses in training, spread between New York, Delaware and

Ohio.

AI try to claim fillies, race them once or twice, and sell them as

broodmares and broodmare prospects,@ Yagoda said. AI have

one colt, Asset Allocation (Tiz Wonderful), who was a leftover

from pinhooking last year and he just won at Delaware the other

day.@

Yagoda is a very hands-on

owner, meticulously studying

the condition book, pedigrees,

sheets and past performances,

looking for the perfect spot for

a horse or his next investment.

He hand picks all of his claims

and also consults trainer Linda

Rice, who conditions his New

York string.

ALinda and I work really well

together,@ Yagoda said. AWe go

over it and try to pick

something we can both live

with and go on from there. We

always have a plan. I don=t just

open the paper and say let=s

claim this one. I look for pace, bias and trip. I look for subtleties

others may have missed.@

When not at the track, Yagoda is hard at work as Executive

Vice President of Streit=s Matzo, which was founded by his

great-grandfather Aron Streit in 1925, but his career in racing

can also be seen as continuing the family business.

Yagoda cont.

AThis is my 30th year owning horses, but my grandfather and

my dad owned horses,@ Yagoda said. AI=m the third generation of

horse owners, but I have the bug the worst. I have win pictures

going back to the 1940s with my grandfather=s horses. In fact, I

try to reuse the names of some of his old horses and I try to win

on certain dates he won.@

While Yagoda tries to keep his family=s racing traditions alive,

he is also carving out his own path in the Sport of Kings and that

may lead him to being able to say he pinhooked a Grade I

winner Saturday afternoon.

Georgia On Their Mind cont. from p1

The stumbling block to getting pari-mutuel laws enacted in

Georgia--as it has been for the past 30 years, both Schulte and

Damico explained in separate interviews--has nothing to do with

a lack of enthusiasm for horses and everything to do with

rounding up enough elected officials who are willing to support

gambling in a state where moral objections to it run high and

religious conservatism carries considerable clout.

AYou=d be pleasantly surprised to find out how many people

are involved in racing to some degree in Georgia,@ said Schulte,

who first experienced Thoroughbreds as a Michigan schoolboy

in the 1950s when his grandfather owned a string of claimers at

Hazel Park and Detroit Race Course. ABut in terms of raising

Thoroughbreds in Georgia and breeding and whatnot, there are

very few of us.@

Schulte, who has lived in Georgia since his family moved there

when he was 15, retired last year from four decades in the

insurance consulting business and promptly bought 20 acres in

the city of Ball Ground (population 1,433) just so he could raise,

prep for sales, and race a few Thoroughbreds after owning

horses or pieces or partnerships for years. He christened his new

home Southern Oak Farm and partnered with Damico in

acquiring the operation=s initial five bloodstock prospects at the

late 2016 and early 2017 Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton sales.

AWe wanted a place where I could just play, kind of do it allmyself,@ Schulte said. AIf you=re an owner, it=s nice to havehorses in Lexington or Ocala or wherever. But if you can havethem in your backyard, it=s a lot more enjoyable.@ Despite the limited stock, auction buyers would be wise not todismiss Southern Oak Farm as an unfamiliar seller based on howthe catalogue pages of some of their future offerings areshaping up.

They own the broodmare Cades Bay (Fusaichi Pegasus), who isthe dam of >TDN Rising Star= Sunset Ridge (Algorithms), thethree-for-three filly who headlines Friday=s $200,000 FleetIndian S. for New York-breds at Saratoga Race Course. Cades Bayproduced a 2017 First Samurai filly for Southern Oak Farm andhas since been bred back to Algorithms. The partnership alsoowns a Majesticperfection yearling colt whose full-sister, PrettyPerfection, won two stakes races at Gulfstream Park earlier thisyear. Damico, a retired partner in a global forensic accounting firmand also a northern transplant to Georgia, has been puttingtogether East Coast racing partnerships for 35 years, primarilyunder the stable name The Posse. Georgia On My Mind cont.

Damico got his first taste of the sport as teen in Fair Haven,

New Jersey, where he worked at a country club near Monmouth

Park and two of the regulars he caddied for always had to rush

off the links to make first post. Those golfers were Amory

Haskell, Monmouth=s president, and Eddie Blind, the track=s

starter. As luck would have it, decades later, Damico was a

part-owner of Wayar, who ran fourth in the 1986 Haskell

Invitational.

AIt=s a family affair for us. Our primary love is the racehorse,@

Damico said, noting that his family notched its 300th winner

earlier this year and that he has introduced about 75

newcomers to the sport over the decades by inviting them into

The Posse=s partnerships.

Schulte said that when he and Damico met at a local wine

tasting 10 years back, neither at first realized that during

different tenures, they had both served as past presidents of the

Georgia Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Since

then, the GHRC has evolved as the driving entity pushing for a

racetrack in the state. Schulte serves as its secretary; Damico is

the treasurer.

@It=s a political football. It=s been frustrating. But we keep

trying,@ Damico said of the GHRC=s goal of bringing racing to

metro Atlanta, the largest-populated geographic area in the

nation without access to live Thoroughbred racing.

AThe closest racetrack is Keeneland, which is six hours away,@

Schulte said.

The Keeneland model does, however, offer a blueprint for how

the GHRC would like to see a $500-million privately funded track

operated in the state, Schulte said.

AWe want to just run a boutique meet. We like the Keeneland

style--a meet in the spring and a meet in the fall that basically

catches the horses when they=re coming south for the winter

and when they=re going back in the spring,@ Schulte said. Cont p6

GHRC=s proposed racetrack

Georgia On My Mind cont.

But Schulte is realistically blunt about how little revenue the

state might receive from just two boutique seasonal meets. He

said the $15-20 million in annual revenue the GHRC projects is

dwarfed by the $500-$600 million that casino companies--which

also want to expand into Georgia--are promising the state.

ASo we made a decision, whether right or wrong, to kind of

join forces with the casinos,@ Schulte said. AThe GHRC told casino

interests >We will throw our weight behind you, but you=ve got

to include us in your bill.= So if [the state] allows for a casino,

they allow for a racetrack. And [the casinos] went for that,

because we do have a lot of traction and a lot of good

relationships with the legislators.@

This teaming-up strategy, Damico admitted, is not without

potential political peril. In 1992, when a pari-mutuel bill was tied

to legislation that would start Georgia=s first lottery, the

then-governor asked pari-mutuel interests for the favor of

allowing racetrack betting to be uncoupled from the legislation

so the lottery bill could pass unencumbered, with the promise of

Awe=ll take care of you next time,@ Damico recounted.

ABig mistake,@ Damico said. ABecause there was never a next

time.@

Or, as Schulte put it, AFor years we did it the old-fashioned

way. Which is, we would beg [Kentucky and Florida] stallion

owners for [donated] seasons. We would sell the seasons. We

would raise some money. We would go down to the capitol and

we would make donations to the legislators we thought we

needed to influence. And we didn=t get anywhere.@

Schulte said he understands why Georgia politicians are

reluctant to place an emphasis on anything having to do with

gambling, which in the past has seemed tantamount to political

suicide in a state that is a Christian conservative stronghold.

AIf you get a legislator aside at a dinner or something, it=s one

conversation. You get him in front of a lot of people, it=s a

different conversation. The private conversations [about

Thoroughbred racing] are all encouraging,@ Schulte said. ABut

because there=s no demand, [elected officials] are saying >I=m

not going to stick my political neck out for you guys, because

there=s just no logic in it.= So we have to create demand. And the

only way we can think of to create demand is to show some

good revenue numbers for the state. We=ve got to show the

state that there=s significant revenue in it for you if you legalize

pari-mutuel wagering in Georgia.@

Both Damico and Schulte spoke enthusiastically about the

GHRC=s conceptual racetrack, which is designed to boost the

state=s bottom line not only by allowing horse racing, but by

fostering the growth of other industries, too.

AOur thought was, let=s not put a racetrack in the middle of a

field surrounded by a parking lot,@ Schulte explained. ALet=s

make this a multi-use development where you have a racetrack

that is surrounded, literally 360 degrees, by condos, office

buildings, light industry, restaurants, soccer fields, polo fields--

things like that. The premise being, it=s really more of a park-like

setting versus >I=m going to the track.= The track is part of this

whole complex. So I may be in my condo that sits right at the

half-mile pole, and I=m sitting out on my deck having morning

coffee looking at horses training on the racetrack.@

Which brings us back to the horses themselves--the easiest

selling point of the whole deal, the two partners acknowledged.

AOnce people are exposed to horse racing, they fall in love.

Especially if you can take them to the backside and let them kind

of see how it all works,@ Schulte said. ADon=t just take them to

the track for five races then go home. Just kind of let them get

inside the whole sport and let them realize it=s all about the

animal and we=re all kind of in this together. If you get people

really involved, they latch on.@

That=s how it=s worked out so far for the first round of

Georgia-based partners that Damico recruited to buy into this

year=s Southern Oak Farm bloodstock initiative.

AOur four other minority partners are having a ball, because

they get to see the babies, the yearlings, and the broodmares

right here in Georgia,@ Damico said. (Schulte added that the two

pregnant broodmares will be sent to Kentucky to drop their

foals early next year because the AGeorgia-bred@ designation

currently has no catalog-page value in the marketplace. The

foals will then return to Georgia to be prepped for sales.).

But if the legislative effort fails to bring a racetrack to Georgia,

does Southern Oak Farm have a future in the state?

AAbsolutely. We=d like to even grow it a little bit,@ Schulte said.

ASpending half the day out in the barn taking care of these

horses is something I just really enjoy.@ (Return to p1)

J. J. & Todd Pletcher at Saratoga Thursday morning

Christie DeBernardis

One Last Cast | A. Coglianese

ALGORITHMS FILLY A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR

THE PLETCHERS By Christie DeBernardis

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Trainers J. J. and Todd Pletcher team

up quite regularly as the elder Pletcher breaks many of his son=s

trainees at his Payton Training Center in Florida. In Friday=s New

York-bred Seeking the Ante S., the father-son duo team up in a

different way, as the co-owners and breeders of One Last Cast

(Algorithms).

The juvenile filly is the first foal out of Firstotheline (First

Samurai), who the Pletchers bought for $75,000 as a Keeneland

September yearling.

AThe reason we own [One Last Cast] is that we bought her

mother as a yearling,@ said J.J. Pletcher, while standing at the rail

of the main track watching one of his son=s sets train.

A[Firsttotheline] is a half-sister to a good horse Todd trained

called Lion Tamer (Will=s Way), who won the [2004 GI] Cigar

Mile, so we thought she might have the potential to be a good

broodmare. She had a bad knee on her, so we just retired her

and bred her to Algorithms because we had a free breeding in

him. I broke him and sent him to Todd to train, and when he

retired, we got a breeding to him.@

Graduating by 3 1/4 lengths on debut at Aqueduct Apr. 19,

One Last Cast failed to fire when sixth in the Astoria S. at

Belmont June 8 and improved to be third next out in the state-

bred Lynbrook S. July 16 behind stablemate Pure Silver, who

romped by 9 1/2 lengths in the GII Adirondack S. Aug. 12.

AShe got a little black-type last time,@ J.J. Pletcher said. AThat is

mainly what we are looking for. We=d be happy to run third.@

Firstotheline is the only broodmare J.J. and Todd Pletcher own

together. She produced foals by Mission Impazible the last two

seasons and is back in foal to Munnings.

While the father and son team have only one broodmare, they

do have one other racehorse, a 4-year-old gelding named

Thebigfundamental (Uncle Mo).

Second in his career bow at Gulfstream in March, the bay

donned cap and gown by 8 1/2 lengths next out at Belmont a

month later and captured an allowance there June 10. Third

going nine panels at Saratoga July 23, he returned to winning

ways over that track and trip Aug. 17.

AThebigfundamental, he is our claim to fame right now,@ said

J.J. Pletcher.

When asked how these two partnerships came about, the

elder Pletcher said, AWe just kind of take it as it comes.@

The Pletchers also have the benefit of J.J.=s training center,

which they utilize when one of their horses has an issue.

AIf something goes wrong with them, we can take them and

turn them out,@ J.J. Pletcher explained. AI=ve got about 80 acres

at my training center and 20 at my house, so I turn them out and

give them professional neglect.@

That Aprofessional neglect@ seems to have worked so far and

with the experience and knowledge of both Pletchers, this is a

father-son partnership that is bound for success.

Lot 133, one of six Arqana purchases for Crupi | Arqana photo

CRUPI BELIEVES HE FOUND TALENT, VALUE

AT ARQANA By Bill Finley

Whether or not the bold experiment by U.S.-based bloodstock

agent Jimmy Crupi and his client St. Elias Stable to purchase

yearlings at the Arqana August Yearling Sale turns out to be a

success won=t be determined for some time to come, but Crupi

returned to his base in Florida confident that he purchased

horses with ample potential.

Along with Marco Bozzi, Crupi signed the ticket for six Arqana

yearlings that cost a combined i1.065 million. The most

expensive (i420,000) of the lot was a colt by New Approach

who is a half-brother to Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the winner

of this year=s GII King Edward VII S. and the GII Betfred Dante S.

Permian was euthanized after suffering an injury during the

running of the Aug. 12 GI Secretariat S. at Arlington Park.

AWe liked the New Approach colt the best and he=s the one we

spent the most money

on,@ Crupi said. AWhen

we signed the ticket we

got a lot of compliments.

The underbidder came

up to me and said, >You

just bought a beautiful

horse. Good luck.=@

Crupi said he had

studied the Arqana sale

before and was

providing an undisclosed

client a Ashort list@ of

horses he liked. Since he would have been doing work for this

sale anyway, Crupi decided it made sense to actually buy horses

rather than simply provide insights to a client. Viola agreed to

join the team, as did Bozzi.

Crupi said he relied on him heavily since he is not that familiar

with European pedigrees.

AI picked horses out that, if you look at their pedigrees, there

are some American horses in the second or third dams,@ Crupi

said. AThat helped and so did Marco with his input. I definitely

did not understand these pedigrees the way I would with

American-bred horses. Some of the dams won a Grade III where

they give you a fish head if you win...they give you no money.

So, I didn=t know what was good or bad and Marco really helped

me.@

Crupi said his main focus was to find horses that might not be

good fits for European racing. He said he stayed away from all

horses that were eligible for the French premium bonus system,

knowing they would go for more money than those not eligible

for the program. He also looked for yearlings that may not have

come across as prototypical turf horses.

AIn the old days, when people used to examine the feet, a five

or a six was considered a grass foot,@ he explained. AWe picked

horses out that didn=t have that grass foot and the Europeans

weren=t really interested in them. That=s where we thought we

got our value. A horse that normally runs on the grass has a big

flat, 5 or 6, foot. I thought I got real value. Some could turn out

to be turf horses. We=ll see.@

When it came to examining the yearlings from a physical

standpoint, Crupi said that part was not difficult.

AWhen you=re looking at horses, really, a horse is a horse,@ he

said. AIt=s not really something new.@

Asked whether or not he will return to Arqana or other

European sales in the future, Crupi said he will make that

decision after having a chance to see how the group he just

purchased turns out. Cont. p9

"Successful results in the sales ring and on the racetrack have

generated a significant increase in entries for this year's October

Sale, prompting us to add a fourth session on Thursday,

Oct. 26," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. "We're

pleased with the interest consignors have shown in the sale, and

we look forward to an outstanding four-day run of selling in late

October."

Selling will begin each morning at 10 a.m. Catalogues will be

available in late September.

RMTC STATEMENT ON COURT DECISION In response to a decision entered in Franklin County

(Kentucky) court Aug. 18, officials at the Racing Medication and

Testing Consortium issued the following statement Thursday. It

runs here in its entirety:

AThe Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) has

reviewed the decision of the Franklin Circuit court in Kentucky

entered on August 18. The ruling in this case is wrong concerning

the scientific basis for the methocarbamol threshold applied by

the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), and has moved

Kentucky backward in its regulation of horse racing--putting at

risk the health and welfare of horses racing in Kentucky, the

safety of jockeys and the integrity of Kentucky horse racing in

general.

Furthermore, the court=s mystifying ruling undermining

Kentucky=s reliance upon the absolute insurer rule regarding

trainer responsibility puts Kentucky out of step with other major

racing jurisdictions and undermines its efforts toward national

uniformity of regulations.@

Methocarbamol Threshold Determination

The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority=s enforcement of the

threshold was properly based upon scientific research and

analysis performed and/or referenced by the RMTC. The original

study upon which this threshold is based was founded on sound

science. The thresholds and withdrawal guidance provide the

best information for compliance where an intravenous dose is

given at 48 hours or more prior to a race. In fact, this

methocarbamol threshold was revisited by the RMTC=s Scientific

Advisory Committee (SAC) as recently as last year. Every time a

new study comes out on any of the controlled therapeutic

substances, the RMTC SAC reviews that data to ensure that the

threshold remains relevant. The RMTC stands behind its

recommendation.

The decision by the circuit court to require the research to

identify the point at which a therapeutic effect completely ends

is short-sighted and over-simplifies the complexities of

determining thresholds for therapeutic medications. That

question assumes the possibility of pinpointing the exact

concentration at which a medication no longer has an effect in a

sport where fractions of an inch mean the difference between

winning and losing. Moreover, it fails to take into consideration

the side effects of a medication which can ultimately affect the

outcome of a race. Here, the side effects of methocarbamol

include sedation. A horse that is quiet in its stall will likely run a

better race than one that washes out on race day. Thus, to

determine when a therapeutic medication=s effects no longer

affect the outcome of the race is not a simple determination. It

takes expertise--this is the area of expertise that the RMTC SAC

has and the court does not.

The Trainer Responsibility Rule

The United States as a whole has moved away from the

rebuttable presumption standard to the absolute insurer rule.

Kentucky needs to move along with the rest of the country. This

is the best way to ensure the integrity of the sport as well as the

health and safety of racehorses.

In conclusion, the RMTC vigorously opposes this decision and

stands by the KHRC.

The RMTC=s SAC consists of experts in the field of analytic

chemistry, veterinary pharmacology, regulatory veterinary

medicine, toxicology and veterinary medicine. There is no other

body in U.S. racing with this broad base and depth of scientific

experience. The individuals on the SAC have over 350 years of

experience specifically related to racing.@

DIPLOMAT UPSETS NY TURF WRITERS CUP

by Don Clippinger

Brothers Adam and Richard Newman are longtime participants

in New York racing, but from their earliest days at Saratoga Race

Course, they had this dream that might seem, well, a little

quirky. They wanted to own a steeplechase horse.

The jump races are a part of Saratoga=s tradition and a part of

its aura. Finally, in the waning days of the 2015 Saratoga meet,

Adam Newman decided to pull the trigger. Diplomat (Kitten=s

Joy), a product of Ken and Sarah Ramsey=s breeding juggernaut,

was in for a price in an optional-claiming hurdle.

He called his brother to say that he was planning to claim

Diplomat, then 6. ARichard said right away, >I=m in,=@ Adam

recalled. Racing in the name of their new and slightly quirky

Flying Elvis Stable, Diplomat looked at first to be a brilliant claim.

He flunked out in Grade 1 company in his next start, but then

won the G3 David L. AZeke@ Ferguson Memorial in Virginia.

That was in October 2015; then the drought began. It

extended to Thursday, when Diplomat proved against a

formidable field that he is ready for prime time. Sent off at

17.70-to-1 in the $150,000 G1 New York Turf Writers Cup H.

Diplomat uncorked a stirring move through Saratoga=s stretch,

took the lead just before the furlong pole, and drew away to a

three-length victory.

Trained by Kate Dalton and ridden by Bernie Dalton, Diplomat

ran the New York Turf Writers= 2 3/8 miles in 4:29.90 on firm

turf.

Robert A. Kinsley=s Modem (GB) (Motivator {GB}), second in

Saratoga=s G1 A. P. Smithwick Memorial on July 27 and the 2-to-

1 favorite in Saratoga=s premier steeplechase race, finished

second, and 5-to-1 second betting pick All the Way Jose (Senor

Swinger) picked up third money, 1 3/4 lengths farther back.

Petticoats Loose Farm=s Choral Society (Holy Bull) finished

fourth, and Smithwick winner Swansea Mile (Ire) (Dylan Thomas

{Ire}) was fifth in a field of 10. Portrade (Ire) (Trade Fair {GB}),

last year=s front-running New York Turf Writers winner, and

overseas shipper Colla Pier (Ire) (Hawk Wing) were scratched.

While the Newmans dreamed of owning a steeplechase horse,

a Grade 1 never was part of the equation.

AI never thought we would win a race like the Turf Writers,@

Adam Newman said.

They did know, however, where their horse would be trained

and that Kate Dalton would train him. The Daltons are based in

Camden, S.C., where the Newman horses wintered, and the

Newmans met the wife-husband team there.

AI thought that if I ever got involved, I wanted it to be with

Kate and Bernie,@ Adam Newman said. AThey do wonderful

work.@

They in fact do just about all the work themselves at the

Camden Training Center, and Bernie Dalton is aboard Diplomat

almost every day. Diplomat ran third in the Smithwick, albeit

more than 16 lengths behind Swansea Mile, and they plotted

how to capitalize on his improvement.

The decision, made Monday, was to take off his blinkers. AIt

seemed there was going to be a lot of pace in the race to run at,

and we were thinking that we wanted to sit back with him a

little bit this time and come with a run,@ the trainer said.

Even without the presence of Portrade, the New York Turf

Writers had more than adequate pace with Maram Ltd.=s

Alcazar de Maram (Giant=s Causeway) showing the way under

Gerard Galligan. Approaching the last of nine fences,

Buttonwood Farm=s All the Way Jose moved forward under

leading jockey Darren Nagle and took the lead at the last.

Modem and jockey Jack Doyle made their move nearing the

last, and Bernie Dalton tracked the favorite. It was a wise choice.

Modem moved toward the front on the turn, with Diplomat in

his wake. Dalton tipped his mount to the outside at the top of

the stretch and Diplomat provided him with the boost he was

hoping for.

Kate Dalton said Diplomat also benefitted from an 18-pound

break in the weights from Modem.

AHe=s a lovely horse, and he tries all the time as hard as he can,

but he=s not a very big horse. He=s had a lot of weight ups and

downs, so having 138 pounds on him today was a real

advantage,@ she said. Click for the Equibase.com chart or

Defiant Honor, the beaten favorite in the GIII Lake George S.

on opening day, made amends with a stalk-and-pounce score in

the Riskaverse S. Thursday at Saratoga.

A second-out winner last fall at Belmont, the bay shipped

across the country to be runner-up in the GIII Jimmy Durante S.

Nov. 26 before capturing an allowance in her sophomore debut

June 21 back at Big Sandy. Fading to sixth after tracking the pace

in the Lake George, Defiant Honor was made the distant second

chance in this feature and broke sharply before allowing favored

>TDN Rising Star= Cherry Lodge (Bernardini) to sprint clear

through a :23.67 quarter. That one was able to slow things down

past a :49.15 half, but had a tenuous lead at the top of the lane.

Defiant Honor was the first to attack, quickly taking charge from

the pacesetter at the three-sixteenths pole, and she kicked clear

into the final furlong before holding sway late from Fizzy Friday

(GB).

AI think she's a quality filly and things went well for her today,@

said winning trainer Jimmy Toner. AShe had had a myectomy,

where they cut the muscles in the throat because, with the

displacement of the soft pallet, it cuts off the wind and they

can't breathe and they panic. But today, you can see the

difference. Also, the way the race set up, there was one speed

and she didn't have to be restrained or anything. It was a perfect

trip. Everything worked out today. It's all good.@

spurted clear in the stretch to score under wraps by 5 1/2

+FORGET ME NOT (f, 2, Uncle Mo--Moroccan Rose {SP}, by

not disappoint, shaking off pace pressure and drawing clear to

score. Showing an above-average worktab, capped by a five-

furlong breeze here in 1:00 1/5 (5/23), the $260,000 KEESEP buy

was backed to 8-5 favoritism and sat a close second through a

:22.11 quarter. Advancing with challengers on either side

around the turn, the dark bay kicked away past the three-

sixteenths pole and finished up well to graduate by 2 1/2 lengths

over Silla Manila (Majesticperfection). The win gave trainer Larry

Editorial, Half to Uncle Mo, Retired to Climax Stallions:

Editorial (War Front--Playa Maya, by Arch), a half-brother to

top sire Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), has been acquired by Climax

Stallions and will enter stud for the 2018 breeding season.

Bred by the Playa Maya Syndicate, Editorial missed by a head

on his 7 1/2-furlong debut over the Gulfstream turf course

Apr. 29 before going one better in his most recent appearance

over that course and distance June 15 (video).

"We are very excited for the opportunity to stand Editorial at

stud, as he fits our program perfectly,@ said Sean Feld, Managing

Director of

Climax

Stallions.

AUnder the

care of Todd

Pletcher for

Editorial

displayed an

impressive turn

of foot, which

you always

look for in a

top sire. He has a phenomenal pedigree and the looks to match.

He should thrive in the breeding shed."

Editorial joins a stallion roster at Climax that also includes

second-leading active California sire Haynesfield; Frankel (GB)=s

half-brother Bullet Train (GB); and Curlin to Mischief, a

half-brother to Into Mischief.

A stud fee and location will be announced at a later time.

+ARTISTIC DIVA (f, 2, Munnings--Diva N Disguise, by Mizzen

her debut Thursday at Del Mar. Showing a flashy worktab,

punctuated by a best-of-64 half-mile spin on the local main in

:46 3/5 Aug. 11, the $425,000 OBS April buy broke a bit

hesitantly as the 9-10 chalk, but quickly made up ground to stalk

longshot Great Ma Neri (Reagan Republican) from second

through a :22.71 quarter. Those two arrived at the head of the

lane on even terms, but the favorite surged to the front passing

the furlong grounds and inched away late to a 1 1/2-length

graduation over the pacesetter. The winner is easily the most

expensive progeny of her sire to sell this year and her dam was

bred back to Munnings this spring. Sales History: $67,000 Ylg '16
