Derby hero Nyquist (Uncle Mo) during Book 1 of the Keeneland

September Yearling Sale. Jessica Martini has the details. Click or

IRISH CHAMPION S.TAKING SHAPE

The prospect of Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) taking on

stablemate Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) remained a possibility

when both Ballydoyle stars appeared among 14 possible runners

for Saturday=s G1 QIPCO Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown.

O=Brien has also left Winter in the G1 Coolmore Stud Fastnet

Rock Matron S. the same day, so he also has that option for the

four-time Group 1 winner. Other potential Ballydoyle

representatives in the Irish Champion S. are Hydrangea (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}), Lancaster Bomber (War Front), Cliffs Of Moher

(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

A strong British challenge is headed by Eminent (Ire) (Frankel

{GB}) who looked a future Group 1 winner for Martyn Meade

when landing the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville last

month.

"The plan is to run and Frankie Dettori rides,@ Meade said on

Tuesday, which would mean Eminent will be having his fourth

different jockey in as many runs. That fact doesn=t worry Frankie

Dettori who told Racing Post, "I'm delighted to be riding

Eminent as he is a very exciting colt and looks as if he'll enjoy

going around Leopardstown. It's a race in which I've done well

previously and hopefully can do so again."

Joining Eminent from England could be Roger Charlton=s

Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), already a Group 1 winner

in Ireland this year when successful in the G1 Tattersalls Gold

Cup at The Curragh in May, Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the

Saeed Bin Suroor stable and Sir Michael Stoute=s Poet=s Word

(Ire) (Poet=s Voice {GB}). Dermot Weld could be doubly

represented by a previous winner of the race in The Grey

Gatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who claimed the scalp of

Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2014 and GI Man O=War S.

winner Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The Jim Bolger

trained Moonlight Magic (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) could be a

second Godolphin runner while heavy rain on Monday night will

surely encourage trainer Ken Condon to let his good money

spinner Success Days (Ire) (Jeremy) take his chance in the

i1.25m contest.

THE SOCIAL ANGLE

NOSEDA HAS BIG PLANS FOR JUVENILES The emergence this year of the big-spending ownership

syndicate Phoenix Thoroughbreds has seen trainer Jeremy

Noseda unleash some well bred, expensive and ultimately smart

looking 2-year-olds such as Lansky (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and

Take Me With You (Scat Daddy). However he also appears to

have a strong team of juveniles belonging to other owners and

the Newmarket trainer issued an update on some of these on

Tuesday. Quivery (Violence) is one Noseda is keen on despite

her defeat last time in the G3 Prestige S. at Goodwood. The

Marc Keller owned filly, who was a $360,000 purchase at Ocala

in March, was previously two for two and Noseda is hoping a

return to a more conventional track will allow the filly show her

true colours.

"She will go to the [G2] May Hill [at Doncaster on Sept. 14] if

the ground is good or faster,@ Noseda said. AThe race didn't work

out well at Goodwood. She didn't like Goodwood and she wants

a flat track. As long as she gets good or faster ground, she is

definitely a filly for Doncaster."

>TDN Rising Star> Betty F (GB) (Frankel {GB}) created a good

impression when making a winning debut in a novice event at

Newmarket Aug. 26 and Noseda is aiming for the top with the

filly who is part owned by her breeder Charles Fox.

AShe came out of the race well, she didn't beat anything much

but the manner in which she did it was good, she's very

talented," he said. "The aim is the [G1] Cheveley Park S. and it

depends if we have a race in between, or just take her for a

racecourse gallop."

WITH ROB BOOBYER, NEWBURY RACECOURSE

By Amie Karlsson

More and more businesses in the Thoroughbred industry are

using social media to strengthen their brand and reach out to

current and potential customers and clients. Rob Boobyer, Head

of Marketing at Newbury Racecourse, shares his insights on

their strategies for social media marketing.

TDN: What are the benefits of social media marketing for

businesses in the Thoroughbred industry?

RB: From a racing point of view, which is what we use it

primarily for, social media is very much a direct access to

customers. It is a way for us to communicate our messages and

to engage with customers and potential customers. The more

we can engage people the more we can spread our message to

their associates.

TDN: What are the aims with your social media marketing?

RB: On a very basic level, it is to try to encourage people to

come racing. Secondary, it is about communicating messages to

our customers about what goes on during a raceday. The third

objective is more about educating and providing informative

content about things that our followers might want to know. It

could for example be a video of us watering the course, or a

panoramic shot from the inside of the parade ring prior to a

race. Cont. p4

The Social Angle With Rob Boobyer Cont.

TDN: What social channels do you prefer, and what type of

content do you post on each platform?

RB: We primarily use Facebook and Twitter. We are using

Instagram a lot more but it is very much linked to our activity on

Facebook. We try to push similar content across the three

platforms. The content we put on Twitter tends to be a little bit

more about the racing. Instagram is of course heavily picture led

and Facebook is a mix between the two. We also use Facebook

more for advertising purposes, as we can target specific

demographics and tailor our messages to different groups.

Generally, people find videos more interesting than static

photography, but it depends a lot on the content as well. We

have posted videos of, for example, the watering machine going

around the course and the sprinklers in the parade ring, and

they get an amazing amount of engagement. Those little

glimpses of what is going on behind the scenes, what it takes to

prepare a racecourse, are very popular.

And sometimes, posts you wouldn't expect to have a massive

reach get picked up. For example, we posted a photo a while

back of a horse that jumped going over the finishing line in a flat

race, as a caption competition, and that got a lot of engagement.

The Social Angle With Rob Boobyer Cont.

TDN: Do you look at other organisations, inside or outside the

Thoroughbred world, for inspiration?

RB: Yes, we are looking at what we can do differently and how

we can improve what we do. If a racecourse does something

particularly well, we look at what they are doing to see if we can

do something similar. And the same in other industries, if there

are things that we feel we can use.

Most industries have embraced social media and individual

companies are using it in different ways: some as a customer

service tool, some as a promotional tool. We are trying to use it

as a mix between the two. But the nature of social media is that

it changes on almost a daily basis, so we have to constantly

evolve to maximize our reach.

TDN: How do you measure success? Can you convert social

media followers into customers?

RB: That's the challenge! We can measure click-through rates.

The ultimate ideal is that we can engage someone on social

media and that conversation will lead to a ticket purchase. We

then get their data, which allows us to speak directly to them

through email or post.

TDN: What are the biggest mistakes to avoid making?

RB: Make sure everything that is sent out is proof read and

make sure that your links work. It is the same with more

traditional marketing: you have to make sure it is accurate. The

thing with social media is that everything is such a fast pace and

anything you put out there is amplified massively so you must

be aware of the content you are putting out, making sure that

you don't open yourself up for having errors amplified.

TDN: Going forward, what social media trends are you looking

forward to?

RB: I think more user-generated content. Particularly from a

racing and racing experience point of view. The more people

enjoy what we offer and share that with their followers and

friends, the easier it will be for us to convince people to

purchase tickets.

WEEKLY SALES TICKER by Bill Oppenheim

“The Goffs UK (ex Doncaster) Premier Yearling Sale continued its impressive rise with a 13% gain in gross and a 15% gain in average, breaking the £50,000 average mark for the first time, and for at least the sixth successive year the percentage sold from those catalogued broke the 80% mark (83.0% this year), making this sale unique among North American and European yearling sales with such impressive clearance rate figures. The BBAG Yearling Sale in Baden-Baden last Friday suffered marginal dips in gross (-8%) and average (-4%) but did mark the impressive sales debut of Lanwades’ 2014 G1 German Derby winner Sea The Moon, who has now had 15 yearlings sell for an average of €110,386, including a €460,000 colt in Baden-Baden.”

HINKLE FARMS SEEKINGBIG SEPTEMBER

by Jessica Martini

Four years ago, Tom Hinkle, brother Henry and daughter Anne

Archer watched a weanling colt by Uncle Mo go through the

sales ring at the 2013 Keeneland November sale, attracting a

final bid of $180,000. The team jumped into action to secure the

colt=s dam Seeking Gabrielle (Forestry) for $100,000 just one hip

later. The purchase proved to be fortuitous when that weanling,

who sold for $230,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling

Sale the following fall and for $400,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton

Florida sale, went on to become champion 2-year-old and

GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. Hinkle Farms will offer a

half-brother by Flatter to the champion as hip 84 during

Monday=s Book 1 session of the Keeneland September sale.

AI was there at the sale with my dad and my uncle,@ recalled

Anne Archer Hinkle. AIt=s always great when a mare sells at the

same time as her foal. That way you can kind of gauge what you

think other foals out of her will look like. [Nyquist] was great

looking. He sold really, really well. He sold one hip in front of her

and we were walking into the sales pavilion to get a seat and I

just remember everybody saying, >Wow--he sold really well for

an Uncle Mo.= That was Uncle Mo=s first crop at the time and not

that many people had seen too many of his weanlings. He was

not Uncle Mo yet. I=m sure there were people out there smarter

than us who knew what he was going to turn into now, but we

certainly didn=t know that at the time.@ Cont. p3

Hinkle

Hinkle Farms Seeking Big September cont.

The 2013 auction was Seeking Gabrielle=s second straight

appearance at the November sale. The mare, with Nyquist in

utero, RNA=d for $90,000 in 2012.

AThere is nothing wrong with the mare,@

Hinkle said. AShe is attractive, but she is

not a show-stopper. I think she is one of

those mares that, her foals are more

striking and more attractive than she is.

She is just not flashy.@

Of the mare=s appeal to her family=s

commercial breeding operation, Hinkle

added, AWe were looking for more mares

that year. When we purchased her, she

was in foal to Blame, and I know my dad

and my uncle were especially excited

about Blame and thought it would be

great to have another foal by him. Then

after seeing how great the weanling was, I

think that was even more reason to go for

the mare. Honestly, I think we were

surprised when she only sold for what she

did. And now, of course, that looks like a

bargain.@

The yearling received another boost when his sire Flatter was

represented by recent GI Travers S. winner West Coast.

AThat was great--we all shared a text between ourselves,@

Hinkle said. AIt was perfect timing. But

Flatter is a really great sire, so there is no

reason why he can=t have really top-tier

horses.@

Hip 84 is one of two half-siblings to

Kentucky Derby winners scheduled to sell

at Keeneland next Monday. Dromoland

Farm will offer a half-sister by Pioneerof

the Nile to 2017 Derby winner Always

Dreaming (Bodemeister) as hip 124.

Hinkle admitted having such a well-

related yearling in the shedrow provides

the consignment with an extra bit of buzz.

AWe=re really fortunate just to have the

family on the farm and to own the mare,@

she said. AFor a small consignment like

ours, it=s definitely really exciting. We just

hope when he gets there, he lives up to

the hype. Because he certainly does have

a lot of hype around him. It=s a special

thing to be the only Flatter in Book 1, as well.@ Cont. p4

Hinkle Farms Seeking Big September cont.

Seeking Gabrielle produced a filly by Blame in 2014. That foal

sold for $330,000 to Bridlewood Farm at the 2015 Keeneland

September sale. The mare produced a filly by War Front this

year and is currently in foal to Tapit.

AHistorically, we try to sell everything, so the plan now, and

when we bred to War Front, is to sell the foal,@ Hinkle said.

AThat=ll be a decision that we have to finalize further down the

road. Of course it=s always in the back of your mind, at one point

I know we=ll want to hold on to a filly of hers and you can=t do

much better than War Front. But that foal will be so appealing to

so many people. It=s hard to turn away from that as well. The

mare is back in foal to Tapit and she=s carrying a colt. We=ve

taken a big swing with her, but I think she=s worth it and she=s

proven herself.@

Hinkle Farms will offer three yearlings during the Monday=s

Book 1 session. In addition to the Flatter colt, the farm will also

send an Orb half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Divisidero

(Kitten=s Joy) (hip 44) through the sales ring; as well as hip 100, a

daughter of Candy Ride (Arg) out of stakes placed Sweet Tess

(Afleet Alex).

Hinkle Farms purchased Madame du Lac (Lemon Drop Kid),

with Divisidero in utero, for $150,000 at the 2011 Keeneland

November Sale.

AShe is so beautiful,@ Hinkle said of the Orb yearling. AShe has a

massive walk and everything out of that mare has the best

temperament. They are all smart and this yearling is exactly the

same way. She=s also the only Orb in Book 1.@

Madame du Lac=s Bernardini colt RNA=d for $60,000 at last

year=s September sale. Hinkle Farms retained a 50% interest in

the colt, who has been training at Fair Hill, and will campaign

him in partnership with Gunpowder Farms, which owns

Divisidero.

Hinkle Farms purchased Sweet Tess, in foal to Candy Ride, for

$250,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. The mare is a

half-sister to GISP Lady Melesi (Colonial Affair), dam of MGSP

Seruni (Saint Liam).

AShe is a beautiful, beautiful mare,@ Hinkle said of Sweet Tess.

AWe=re all so pleased with this filly. She is big and she has plenty

of bone. Sometimes you worry with the first foal, you worry that

they might be a little slight, but she is not. She is super strong. I

think people are really going to like her.@

Hinkle Farms has catalogued 21 yearlings to the September

sale, including an additional five yearlings in Book 2.

AWe are also really pleased with our Book 2 yearlings,

which include colts by Curlin, Pioneerof the Nile, and Uncle

Mo and fillies by Arch and Into Mischief,@ Hinkle added.

The draft also includes a half-sister by City Zip to recent P.G.

Johnson S. winner Orbolution (Orb) (hip 1762).

Hinkle Farms currently is home to a broodmare band of close

to 40 head.

AOr, as my dad said earlier today, >Too many,@ Hinkle laughed.

AWe are selling a few in November because we have to cut

down on our numbers, but we need to have enough. You can=t

just have five or six mares if you are trying to sell foals as

yearlings. We=ve realized if you bring too few to the sales, if the

big ones that you=re really banking on doing well don=t do as

well for you as you=re hoping, it can be harder to come back

from that. You just need enough numbers to have a little bit of a

safely net.@

The farm traditionally offers all of its crop as yearlings, but in

an unusual turn, will sell some weanlings at the upcoming

Keeneland November sale.

AThis year we are selling three weanling colts, but that is only

because we have 18 colts and eight fillies and we don=t have

enough paddocks for when they get to be yearlings to separate

all the colts. Some years, it is a really even 50-50 split, but we

were really hit hard by colts this year. It isn=t a bad thing, but we

do have to let a few go.@

Following in her father and uncle=s footsteps, Hinkle is the

third generation of her family to help operate the 1,000-acre

Hinkle Farms in Paris, Kentucky.

Hinkle Farms Seeking Big September cont.

The 27-year-old will be making her third trip to the September

sale as the farm=s director of bloodstock services, but she

originally had other plans.

AMy senior year in college, I was really dead-set on going to

veterinarian school,@ Hinkle said. AWhen I got out of school, I

worked for some small animal hospitals and, I think going

through the application process and actually getting some real

experience in that setting, I just realized I didn=t quite think it

was for me.@

She continued, ABut even early on in college, I thought

whatever I do, I always want to be able to help out with the

farm. My dad and my uncle did other things--they were really

involved in highway construction--and my dad managed the

farm, as well. So that was a lofty goal of mine. But then when I

decided I didn=t want to go to vet school, I talked to my dad and

my uncle about working full time for the farm and they were

kind enough to find a place for me. And I=ve been working with

the farm ever since.@

Hinkle is clearly relishing her role at the farm which is steeped

in generations of her family=s history.

AIt=s been really fulfilling to be involved with something that is

so special to my family and to be able to work with my family,@

she said. AMost people look up to their dad and think that he

hung the moon. That=s how I feel. I know that I have such a

special opportunity to learn from my family members, who I

have a tremendous amount of respect for. Of course it=s

challenging learning how to work with family when you=re just

used to interacting with them on a personal level, but it=s been a

great experience and I=ve learned so much from them. I know I

have a lifetime more to learn, but I=ve really enjoyed it so far.@

BATTERS UP! Beginning with the $60-million increase in gross

from Keeneland September 2012 to Keeneland

September 2013, the last four years of Keeneland

September (2013-2016) have seen 11,100

yearlings sold for a total of $1.114 billion and an

average of $100,435. So we know what the target is:

somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,775 sold for a gross of

$278 million, and a $100,000 average. That=s where the sale has

been the last four years. But those totals are weeks away; first

we have the new Fasig Turf sale this Sunday, then the all-new

Keeneland Book 1 on Monday, followed by a three-day Book 2

next Tuesday-Thursday. We=ll clock in with a report Tuesday on

the first two, pretty much entirely new days, and then next

Saturday we=ll try and make sense of the >first week.=

One striking thing about this year=s catalogue, it seems to us, is

the prominence of second-crop yearling sires, whose first

2-year-olds are racing this year. Most years, the sires with their

first yearlings take center stage among younger sires, and those

with first 2-year-olds suffer from the >yesterday=s news=

syndrome. But this year is a little different: 26 sires with their

first yearlings are represented during the 13 days of selling,

totaling 585 yearlings (13.1% of the 4,309 catalogued). There

are 33 sires with their first 2-year-olds, represented by 695

yearlings (16.1% of those catalogued), and 25 sires with their

first 3-year-olds, which combined have 489 yearlings (11.1%)

catalogued. All together, the three youngest groups of sires

include 84 sires, with 1,769 yearlings catalogued, an average of

21 yearlings per sire, and constituting 41% of the total number

of yearlings catalogued over the 13 days. Cont. p7

Oppenheim cont.

For potential buyers looking at any of the 695 yearlings from

the second crops of their sires, the first port of call on their

bookwork will be the North American Freshman Sire List, so let=s

have a look at that (click here). The top six Kentucky-based

freshman sires all have more than 20 yearlings catalogued, so

those will of course be of particular interest. The Leading

Freshman Sire as of now is WinStar=s Overanalyze, a dual

GII winner of the Futurity S. and Remsen S. at two, and winner

of the GI Arkansas Derby at three for Repole Stable; his sire,

Dixie Union, is also the sire of last year=s number two Freshman

Sire, Union Rags. Overanalyze is the sire of 17 winners to date,

three Black-Type Horses (two Graded), and the earners of

$685,617. He=s been a bit of a surprise package, to say the least:

his 52 yearlings sold last year averaged just $27,437, but based

on these results, he=s due for a price upgrade. That, however,

won=t happen in the first week, as all 31 of his yearlings are

catalogued in the second week. Same for Freshman Sire #3,

Spendthrift=s Jimmy Creed, a $900,000 yearling by Distorted

Humor who won the GI Malibu S. and is the sire of 11 winners,

five Black-Type Horses (two Graded), including Spectator,

winner of the GII Sorrento S. and third in the GI Del Mar

Debutante S. last Sunday. He has 23 catalogued in the sales, all

again in the second week.

Hill >n= Dale=s Violence, a son of Medaglia d=Oro who was a

$600,000 yearling and won three of his four starts, including the

GI Cashcall Futurity, and was second to Orb in the GII Fountain

of Youth S. in what turned out to be his final career start, is

number two on the Freshman Sire List, with 11 winners and two

Black-Type Winners, including last weekend=s Del Mar Juvenile

Turf S. winner Encumbered. He=s been a very popular horse all

along--last year 70 yearlings from his first crop averaged

$88,736, and 19 yearlings this year have averaged $96,695--and

has 47 yearlings catalogued, the first eight of them in Book 2.

The aforementioned Orb, Claiborne=s son of Malibu Moon who

won the 2013 GI Kentucky Derby, currently ranks fifth on the

Freshman Sire List, including last week=s Saratoga BTW

Orbolution. Orb has been this crop=s commercial leader all

along; he=s had 15 yearlings sell so far this year for an average of

$315,584. He has 54 yearlings catalogued, one in Book 1 and 26

in Book 2, so half of his yearlings are in the first week.

Coolmore=s Ashford division stands #4 on the Freshman Sire

List with the undefeated Champion North American 2-Year-Old

of 2012, Shanghai Bobby, by Into Mischief=s sire, Harlan=s

Holiday; and #6, Declaration of War (War Front), who won the

G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Juddmonte International, and ran a

close third in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic on dirt as a 4-year-old

in 2013.

Shanghai Bobby has six winners, four of them Black-Type

Horses, while Declaration of War also has four BTH (three GSP),

including G3 winner Actress, and Olmedo, beaten a short head

in the G3 Prix Des Chenes at Chantilly last Sunday. Shanghai

Bobby has 54 yearlings catalogued, all but three (in Book 2) in

the second week, while Declaration of War is the leading sire

with first 2-year-olds by number catalogued, with 78--13 at

Fasig, four in Book 1, 30 in Book 2, and 31 in the second week.

Not forgetting the first-crop sires, who will of course evince

plenty of interest themselves. Ashford=s dual Grade I winner

Verrazano tops the charts with 75 catalogued, and is one of

seven first-year sires with more than 35 catalogued. Three

Chimneys= 2013 Champion 3-year-old Will Take Charge, who has

already had 11 yearlings average $257,272 (click here--first-crop

yearling sires, NA only), has 65 catalogued, while Lane=s End=s

Noble Mission and Airdrie=s Cairo Prince have 58 and 54

catalogued, respectively. All four of these have double-digit

representation in the first week. The top seven first-year sires by

number catalogued are rounded out by WinStar=s Fed Biz (45

catalogued), Spendthrift=s dual GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile

winner Goldencents (43), and Three Chimneys= Strong

Mandate, Wayne Lukas=s previous GI Hopeful S. winner by

Tiznow for owners Baker and Mack (he won it again on Monday

for the same owners, by the same sire, with Sporting Chance).

Strong Mandate, who has 38 catalogued, had an $825,000 filly

at Saratoga, and thus ranks, at least for now, second on the

first-crop sires table with six sold for an average of $222,833.

While that average is sure to fall, he=s still made quite an

impression for a $10,000 sire.

HANDLE UP, ATTENDANCE SLIGHTLY DOWN

AT DEL MAR Del Mar=s 78th summer season, which came to a close

Monday, showed an increase in handle over 2016 while posting

a slight decrease in attendance. Total wagering for the meet

came in at $451.5 million, for a daily average of $12,542,000, up

5.1% over the previous summer, while 476,628 patrons came

through the gates for a daily average of 13,240, down 1.5% from

last year=s figures.

The seaside oval posted gains in average field size from 8.3

horses to 8.6 and crucially, with the Breeders= Cup set to be

contested there for the first time this fall, Del Mar saw four

racing fatalities after 17 deaths marred last summer=s meet.

AIn many ways, you might call this one of the very best meets

we=ve ever had here,@ said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club=s

president Joe Harper.

Executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins added, AIf you

remember the circumstances coming into this meet, there was

real concern about how we=d be able to perform. Filling a

five-day race week with high-end product is a challenge on any

circuit these days. But our horsemen rallied, our racing proved

to be top quality and safe and we were able to put on a first-rate

show for fans around the country.@

Flavien Prat finished the meet strong, booting home seven

winners in the final three days to capture the Del Mar riding title

with 35 victories. The 25-year-old French native, who tied Rafael

Bejarano for last year=s crown and also knotted with apprentice

Evin Roman for this year=s Santa Anita winter/spring meet

honors, finished six up on both Bejarano and Roman, who tied

for second with 29 winners apiece.

Richard Baltas and Phil D=Amato battled to a draw in the

training title race, each collecting one win on closing day to

finish with 18 victories apiece. This was the first title of any kind

for Baltas, while D=Amato took home the crown last summer.

Brothers Pete and Kosta Hronis=s Hronis Racing LLC earned its

third Del Mar owner=s championship, sending out seven winners

and racking up $854,055 in earnings, highlighted by champion

Stellar Wind (Curlin), who defended her title in the GI Clement L.

Hirsch S. July 30.

Del Mar=s fall meet, which features the Nov. 3-4 Breeders= Cup

World Championships, will get underway Wednesday, Nov. 1

and run through Sunday, Nov. 26.
