Cheers to Summer!
There are so many things to love about this time of year. The hot weather, late days, cool drinks, fun in the sun, backyard barbeques and good times with friends and family are what come to mind most. With the kids out of
school, there is no better time to pack up and take advantage of all the fun things to do around our community. We are surrounded with gorgeous scenery from the rolling golden hills to beautiful Folsom Lake; the outdoors are our playground, go enjoy it! Our Charity Spotlight this month declares July as National Parks and Recreation month, so pack up that picnic basket, the kids, and enjoy a picturesque day outside! This issue of Lavish, we tried to encompass all things summer. With temperatures soaring into the triple digits, we took our search indoors to find the ultimate summer cocktail! We were fortunate enough to be introduced to six awesome bartenders who wowed us with their creations. Besides taste testing through these pieces of art (tough job, we know...) we got to meet some incredible people who express their passion in every glass. I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit, you will not be disappointed! Appearing on our cover this month is our Sweet Summer Days fashion spread. Although the shoot fell on the hottest day of the year to date, we had a blast with the help from Larry Barrett at Lucky's Land and Sea. Larry provided the gorgeous boat we shot and also coordinated a friend to drive us around the lake to take some incredible water shots. Everything you see in these photos are for sale, including the boat! I could not be more thankful of Larry and the Lavish team for sticking it out that day! It was a scorcher! In line with the heat this month, we have selected out Getaway to the amazing Phoenix, AZ. Just a short plane ride away, this oasis amidst the desert is an incredible option for relaxation and adventurers alike. Also spotlighted this month is Back Wine Bar & Bistro in Folsom. If you have not tried this restaurant, I'm sure the photos will entice you to try them out! As always, thank you for your loyal readership! and I hope you all enjoy this fun issue! See you in August! Cheers! LAUREN STURMAN

Best friends, Bonnie Myers and Michelle Asnicar combined their passion for fashion to create a successful traveling boutique called Velvet Hanger.
This unique business allows the women to travel to customer’s homes or places of business with their merchandise. “It’s a fun environment,” said Michelle. “I love helping women put outfits together.” The two met when Michelle was selling jeans and Bonnie was in a similar business selling clothing. They crossed paths and became instant friends. “We said hey, we should start our own boutique and it just kind of happened,” said Bonnie.
16 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2014
L O L
Even though the women never formally divided up roles for the business, the two fell in sync with their own responsibilities; Michelle with the marketing and social media and Bonnie with the fashion and buying. Although their boutique is located in the Granite Bay/Folsom area, the couple have traveled all over Northern California including San Ramon, Gilroy and Morgan Hill. These parties they attend usually occur about 5-10 times a month with an average attendance of 20 women per party. The perks to hosting a party include half off select items, and first dibs on anything the women bring. This tends to be a big deal since the boutique carries a limited amount of sizes of the same product. While they claim there haven’t been any fights, they joke that some women get playfully territorial over some of the coveted items. Some of the lines carried at Velvet Hanger include Veronica M, Red Haute, Red23, Elan, Level99 and Black Swan just to name a few.
While they do a lot of traveling, their boutique is set up in Myers’ house where they have open hours, usually one morning and one evening of the week, and also by private appointment. They are also able to host parties at the boutique in case women opt out to hosting the party at their own home or business. Velvet Hanger also sells their products online using social media like Facebook. “We get quite a bit of business from that,” said Michelle. “When we post, we sell.” The business ships nationwide and has even shipped merchandise as far as Hawaii and Wisconsin. The women agree the hardest part of the business is loading and unloading their vehicles with the merchandise, but admit that their husbands are a huge help in that regard. “They’ve been so supportive,” said Bonnie. Both women agree that the most satisfying part of the job is interacting with women and making new friendships with their clients, and they don’t plan to slow down anytime soon, as the
pair is already gearing up for Fall and claim October and November are their busiest months. “We are truly grateful for the people who book with us,” said Michelle. “It’s an amazing job to be able to work with your friend and love what you do.”
LAVISH EXCLUSIVE OFFER: Mention this article and receive 20% OFF one item from the Granite Bay boutique. (Excludes travel shows)

Bars are not just for cocktails anymore. Our beauty expert Missy O'Daniel is here to enlighten us all on the Beauty Bar Buzz... BLOW DRY BARS Originally starting in New York several years ago, blow dry bars opened their doors to offer a new level of service for a quick and easy alternative to styling your own hair. These salons only offer blow dry services. You can not get a haircut or color service at a blow dry bar. They are designed to go in a couple of times a week to have your hair professionally blow dried and styled. This is not only for the uber chic or filthy rich. Blow dry bars are an affordable alternative to styling yourself. Having your hair professionally blow dried makes you look and feel your best. This trend has become so popular that we have seen the need for these services all over the country; not just in major cities. However, due to the lower demand volume it is not quite sustainable to stand alone in our region. Republic Salon and Blow Dry Bar opened August 1, 2010 with the knowledge of consumers needs in the Folsom area. Owner, Carmen Gammon knew her cliental would benefit for the blow dry services at an affordable price. With catchy names like these, who could resist trying out these styles?
• The Dirty Girl - Lots of volume• The Trophy Wife - Sleek and Smooth• The Knock Out - Bring in a picture and they will knock it out
• The Girl Next Door- Loose Curls
• The “It” Girl- On the trendy tip & always hip
As a beauty expert, I recommend using a dry shampoo with a clean fragrance to remove excess oil in the hair, making the hair smell fresh. My personal favorite is Unite 7 Seconds Refresher. This product not only cleans the hair, but it can also be used to break down left over product. For a salon locator that carries Unite 7 Seconds Refresher, check out www.unitehair.com.

BROW BARS Nothing on your face makes a stronger statement than the arch of your brow. Benefit Brow Bar is the original brow bar located in major department stores around the country. This is a quick alternative to seeing your professional aesthetician. Brow bars are becoming a trend as an add on service to salons that do not have a spa. Once you find a brow expert, I recommend staying loyal. Your brows will thank you. It is very easy to have a mishap with the removal of too much hair. To get the perfect arch it can take a few months of growth and shaping.
NAIL BARS Gel nail polish is currently all the rage. This is a great alternative to traditional polish, as it dries instantly under a uv light and lasts for a couple of weeks. Nail art has made a huge come back over the past few years. Manicurists have really perfected the art of creating masterpieces on a fingernail. There are also some fabulous colored acrylic that have ignited nail extensions again.
MAKEUP BARS Really, just your traditional makeup counter. The sparkles, shimmer, and vibrant colored makeup seems to bring out the inner girly girl in all of us. I was recently introduced to a very reasonably priced local makeup line called Blink Beauty. I was fortunate to have award winning makeup artist Sydney Le the owner of Blink Beauty, do my makeup the night I emceed, as co producer of Sacramento Fashion Week 2014. Blink Beauty was the official makeup sponsor for the event. Blink Beauty opened November 1, 2013 and has become the mecca for local makeup artists and makeup lovers to purchase their goods. Blink Beauty is planning on expanding their business nationwide. Beauty bars are available for just about all your beauty needs in a quick pinch, however salon and spa’s offer the convenience of all your beauty needs in one location.

As we head into the heat of the summer months, so does the pace of our trending real estate market. Here again we have our real estate guru Debi Ambroff weigh in on today’s selling trends on the fast-faced, competitive market we are finding ourselves in.
Homes are still selling at a fast pace. In fact, 2013 marked the shortest time homes were on the market since 2005. The average time in 2012 was 26 weeks and in 2013 it was only 8.5 weeks. This situation brings multiple offers, however more so in the lower price ranges. More buyers in this particular price pool are writing multiple offers trying to get one of theirs accepted. Once that home closes escrow, this establishes the market value for the next comparable home that comes on the market. If the buyer is qualified up to a certain amount

and continues to get out bid, as time goes on the buyer will end up with a less desirable home at a higher price. To solve this dilemma, look for an experienced real estate agent who can guide you through the process. There are some important things you can do to beat this challenge.
Here are a few of Debi’s suggestions:
1. Constantly watch the inventory. Have your agent set you up on email alerts. A good agent also knows networks with other agents to find homes that have not come on the market yet. 2. Get a DU Approval. Many buyers are competing against cash buys, so if you don’t have the cash, the next best thing to do is to be prepared by having a desktop underwriter approval letter (DU Approval). To get this approval you must
go through an industry standard underwriting program to be analyzed by a computer program along with your credit score. DU approval is better than a pre-approval. It is an extra stop that may give you an edge that says the buyer is organized, proactive and ready to close escrow. 3. Leverage your lender. Request the lender call the listing agent to assure you are a solid buyer and also explain the additional step of the DU Approval confirming that.
4. If you are a cash buyer, don’t expect a discount in this market. There are lots of cash buyers! The privilege cash allows you is the likelihood that you will be the one the seller will select once they narrow the field down to two or three of their strongest offers. Be prepared by having an up to date “Proof of Funds”. It should be a PDF of your most recent bank statement, investment account,
or other liquid account. Do not send a picture shot of a computer screen, as this can sometimes be the scenario of a fraudulent buyer.
5. Send a “warm and fuzzy” letter with your offer. A family picture on the letter works and a statement of how much you love their home and how you see yourself living in it will surely help. Compliment the seller on the care they have given the home. The emotional connection this established between you and the seller will go a long way, and maybe perhaps the deciding factor for the seller to select your offer.
6. Know the terms. Have your agent call the listing agent to find out what the seller is looking for in terms. Do they want a short or longer escrow period? Do they need a rent back situation after close of escrow? The less hassel for the seller the better.
L O L LAVISH ON LOCALS
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2014 27
7. Write a clean and attractive offer. Don’t ask for personal property in the offer. Don’t ask the seller to pay for inspections. If the house is clean and well maintained, state you will buy the home “As Is” subject your inspections. 8. Appraisal Contigency. If you have the ability to remove your appraisal contingency, this will go a long way! If you are not comfortable with total appraisal removal, then state in your offer you are willing to pay a certain amount over the appraised value. 9. Buy your own home warranty. Standard in El Dorado County is to split the title and escrow fees between seller and buyer. Offer to pay 100% of those fees that the seller would typically pay. Offering to pay these fees bring more net proceeds to the seller and says how much you want to purchase their home. Keep in mind, paying these
fees more than likely will be less money spent than losing this home to another buyer as the next listing to come on the market will more than likely be priced higher than the list price of this particular home. 10. Follow Up. Lastly, Have your agent follow up with the listing agent after your offer is delivered. You want to make sure in a multiple offer situation the agent has definitely received your offer and to see if there are any questions or concerns before he/she presents to the seller. This is a professional courtesy. You may get additional information at this time to make a change in your offer too that could be the difference in getting accepted over the others. The bottom line – find an agent that stays on top of the situation! All of these exercises will help get you into a home much faster in today’s market. The association’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for all people through conservation, health and wellness and social equity by improving local commu-nities. Funded through dues, grants, registrations and chari-table contributions, NRPA generates research, education and policy initiatives that enhance not only parks, but the surrounding communities. L O L Q & A
With Board Certified Plastic SurgeonTerry J. Zimmerman, M.D., F.A.C.S
Q:
WHAT IS FRACTORA?A: Fractora is a fairly new device developed by Inmode which tightens and rejuvenates skin from the inside.
HOW DOES FRACTORA DIFFER FROM A TOPICAL LASER TREATMENT?A: Most lasers, whether resurfacing or fractional, treat the skin from the surface to deliver heat into the tissue to get contraction of the skin collagen. Thus, the recovery time is longer as the redness of the skin fades. Fractora treats down within the skin to achieve the same results with less recovery time.
HOW DOES FRACTORA WORK?A: With the use of a topical numbing cream the Fractora hand piece penetrates into the dermis and conducts a radiofrequency current to heat and cause collagen contraction.
WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS FOR FRACTORA?A: Fractora is the most effective device of its kind on the market to cause skin tightening and eliminate wrinkles when surgery is not yet indicated. It works very well on the stubborn lines around the mouth, ‘crows feet’, and even neck skin laxity.
HOW EFFECTIVE IS FRACTORA?A: The Fractora device can be adjusted to deliver a range of radiofrequency to the tissue. At lower settings it is effective and very well tolerated with results being most achieved after two to three treatments. For more severe wrinkles, the intensity can be increased, but usually requires local anesthesia or sedation at more intense levels.
TESTIMONIAL: I just wanted to tell you both how happy I am with the great results from the 3 Fractora treatments I have had. I am so pleased with the way my complexion looks. I hated the deep lines in my cheeks and the deep folds but these all have been decreased. My face feels firmer and the coloring of my skin is great. I even go out without make up, something I would never had done before. I had a friend tell me last week “Something is different about your face. Almost like you had a facelift or something.“

JUXTAPOSITIONof Design ElementsMIX SHAPES, SIZES, METAL & WOOD
Have you ever walked into a room and imme-diately felt a calmness come over you? This can be in large part the result of a great design. There are certain principles that will simply just allow this feeling to occur as you enter a space. Our design expert Sherrie Swass weighs in on these five elements that are crucial to having this experience. As Sherrie educates us, great design incorporates five key principles: rhythm, balance, harmony, emphasis and scale.
Rhythm...CAN YOU FEEL THE BEAT
Good design has a rhythm similar to music. With one note out of tune, the song doesn’t work or flow cohesively. The same goes for great interior design. Establishing rhythm in a room is all about creating patterns of repetition and contrast to keep visual inter-est. Professional merchandisers are paid very well for their expertise in establishing rhythm throughout large cosmopolitan areas where department stores have enormous budgets to tantalize the consum-er. Rhythm can be created by using similar colors or shapes at dif-ferent intervals. The purpose is not to keep your eyes fixed on one particular design element, but rather moving around the space. The photos on these pages are perfect examples of room settings that have mixed design elements to create a very clean and modern look. The photo on the right features a white rounded sofa that is accen-tuated with a silver painted cube table that is naturally and heavily textured. The textured element of wood in this case is contrasted

DESIGNTRENDSFOR 2014ORGANIC GLAMORNatural Materials such as burled wood are combined with metallic metals in silver, gold and bronze metals.
LUCITE IS COMING BACKLucite is being used to add sleekness to a room.
DARK WALLSContrast of dark and light wall color brings drama to a space. This is a great way to give a room a backdrop for metallic accents.
RECLAIMED WOODSSustainability is a big word in the design industry. Reclaimed wood for furniture and cabinetry is very popular.
NAIL HEAD AND CRYSTALSNail Head and Crystals have become the jewelry for many consumers. They add bling and a uniqueness that people are looking for.
We are affected by design everywhere we go; from the grocery store to looking through the pages of a magazine. What makes one product stand out from of the other? It’s the overall design principles of a space or object. Seek out a professional with fabulous design experience to help assist in your own home’s design and feel the difference.
with the smooth, white fabric on the sofa. The windows in the background add a vertical pattern that connects to the sofa legs and tone of the tables. The round circled wall art is an element of surprise to keep the eyes moving. This repetition of circles and visual movement in the room is creating rhythm.
Balance...THE YING & YANG OF IT.Even though the rooms featured are very eclectic, there is definitely a sense of balance to each. What creates balance in a room? It’s a sense of being equal. It’s about visualiz-ing a weight to the objects. Balance is created through pat-tern, texture and color. In the two photos, every element is presented in symmetrical balance. In other words…the space is even with the placement of two identical tables. In some cases having two of the same tables could be really boring, but as you can see in these photos this not in this case. The photo captures a very modern look but the roundness of the elements make the room very warm and inviting.
Harmony...IT JUST FEELS GOODGreat design at first glance just feels good. This feeling is what design experts call harmony. Harmony is achieved when all elements act together and give the same message, or feeling to the room. Rhythm can create much excitement, however harmony creates a sense of “Peace” in the space. This can be created by using a single color and incorporating this color in different shapes, sizes, and form.
Emphasis...WHERE YOUR EYE GOES.The fireplace in the left photo is a perfect example of a room with emphasis. Too much equal attention without a substantial visual impact can get boring. The fireplace serves as an anchor in this case. It can also be referred to as a focal point in the room. Notice how the silver fish wall art and trim around the fireplace opening, contrast beauti-fully with the wood to create emphasis. Again, roundness is used in this setting to create interest and warmth while the furniture is placed strategically in a way to emphasize the fireplace.
Scale...KEEP THE WEIGHT PROPORTIONAL.Weight can be seen in a physical sense or visually when entering a room. Whatever the subject, weight needs to be proportional to please the other elements in a room. If you are using a 66” console table in a space, you would not hang a horizontal mirror that is 70” over it. The mir-ror would extend past the length of the table making the design disjointed and un-proportionate. Both of these rooms shown are great examples of good scale. In most cases the upholstered furniture is the largest scaled piece in a room. This is why it is so important to pick out the right style, size, fabric, texture and color for your main con-necting furnishing piece. If it is not placed and selected correctly in the space, the entire design will be out of scale.

Back WineBar & BistroBY KIMBERLY HORG PHOTOS DAN HOOD
From humble beginnings come great food. Owners Gail and Jeff Back opened Back Wine Bar in 2008 (during the recession) with high hopes and a Weber BBQ that was a wedding gift. The couple started small as a local wine bar, serving small plates and appetizers and grilling steaks in the back of its intimate 875 square foot establishment.
60 LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2014
In 2011, when the suite next door became vacant, it expanded the kitchen and created a dining room known as the Back Bistro. Now, called the Back Wine Bar and Bistro, it is a neighborhood favorite for date nights and work luncheons alike. Back has a degree in restaurant management and earned his Sommelier Certification so he has experience in both spectrums of the business world. After managing restaurants and wine bars, the Backs decided to bank on their experience. “We didn’t have kids yet so we thought it’s ‘now or never.’ We took a leap and have never looked back,” he said. The restaurant focuses on California Wine Country Cuisine with influences from Mediterranean and European countries. The menu changes frequently as the seasons change. It uses Produce Express and gets most of its produce from local farms. The chef, Justin Kaufman, joined the team at Back Wine Bar in December 2013. He prepares a variety of dishes including its two most popular dishes; the Hawaiian Ahi Poke and Bruschetta. “If you’ve never been here you have to try the Ahi Poke. It is our number one selling dish,” Back said. “Its flavors are a mixture of umami, salty, crunchy and chewy.” Back Wine Bar has around 100 wine selections varying in price. The Wine Bar has 30 wines by the glass, rotated
weekly. The Beck's focus on supporting local and family owned wineries from across the region. Being small business owners themselves, they hold this mentalitiy close to their hearts. “We feel as though we stand out because we are a neighborhood place,” he said. “Our wine list is also what sets us apart from every other restaurant.” It recently added a craft cocktail bar; serving everything from martinis to fine scotch. Guests can try a variety of beverages at happy hour with 25 percent off small plates from 3 to 6 p.m. All of the cocktails are made with from scratch with its own syrups, tonics and mixers. A lot of guests come for “Date Night” for the nice service and swanky ambiance. But it has crafted the menu and wine list to be accessible for every-day occasions as well. Although it doesn’t have a kids menu, children are welcome, especially on the patio. Back Wine Bar offers a variety of seating from a table in the dining room or patio, to a spot at the large horseshoe shaped bar, or an intimate bar table. “People are often very impressed with the ambiance of our place. From the exterior you might not think our little oasis exists,” Back said. Back created the layout while his wife focused on the interiors. He says the couple even agreed on the
S I P & S AV O R BACK WINE BAR & BISTRO
paintings found on the walls. The Backs own the Folsom Tap House in the same shopping center as well. “We want people to feel comfortable and relaxed when they are our guests. So we made soft curves and warm colors throughout,” he said. Back hopes his staff can guide guests to a new wine and pair it with a delicious meal. The small plate menu is approachable and created with wine pairing in mind. “Wine lists can be intimidating to some so we try to break it down using short descriptions,” he said. “Just tell us what you like in a wine and we will ask easy questions to find your perfect wine.” The Backs’ goal is to source quality ingredients, create something special, and then price items accordingly. The menu is structured so guests can eat, drink and feel like you got a great value. For those who want to splurge, Beck's has a fine wine and thoughtfully prepared 4 course dinners available. Reservations are recommended, especially on the weekends. Back Wine has a lot of private events and group functions from girls night’s out to corporate cocktail parties. Groups are encouraged to call at least two weeks in advance in order for the restaurant to make special arrangements. Doors open 3-10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday brunch (with Endless Mimosas) is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wine Bar is also open 5 to 8 p.m. later that night. For more information visit backwinebar.com.

RUNQUIST Winery
BY KELSEY WEHSELS
Amador County is scattered with several wineries, but one in particular has made a name for itself by offering one of the most diverse selections of wines in the region. Nestled along Shenandoah Road in the heart of Amador County, Runquist Winery puts out approximately 20 red varietals from 9 appellations. The
winery is able to create such a various selection due to its use of exported grapes from all over California, including Clarksburg, Lodi, Paso Robles, San Joaquin County and Stanislaus County. "I’m not limiting myself to just the grapes that grow well in Amador County,” said Jeff Runquist, owner and winemaker at Runquist Winery. “I’m always interested in exploring what’s available." While the winery produces several varieties, Runquist chose to focus on four principle wines; Zinfandel, Barbera, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot, which they produce year round. The Petite Sirah is a top-seller, but most recently it has been the Barbera, which comes in two varietals. Jeff gets help running the winery from his wife, Margie, who plays a huge role in the day-to-day functions. She’s managed the tasting room, helped with bookkeeping, plans events and manages the wine club. “She does everything that keeps me focused on making wines,” he said. In 2006, Runquist purchased his 5-acre plot off Shenandoah Road. He waited seven years to buy the parcel of land and in 2008 he opened his tasting room, and he explains settling down in Amador County was an easy decision for him. “It was just a very welcoming wine making community,” he said. “It was just the right fit for me.” His favorite part about this business? “I get to play the game I want to play, such as making the wine I want to drink,” he said. “But ultimately there’s a great deal of satisfaction being a part of people’s lives, and giving them something to enjoy,” he added with a smile.

L CAL LODI WINES
S I P & S AV O R WINE PICKS | LODI
THIS MONTH'S PICK FROM LOCAL LODI WINERIES.
WOODBRIDGE Uncorked
BY KIMBERLY HORG
Located in the midst of the Lodi Wine Region, Woodbridge Uncorked offers visitors handcrafted wines from six of Lodi’s premier wineries. Owned and operated by Austin and Katie Lesley, Uncorked is a boutique winery that celebrates the areas vintages. The couple purchased Woodbridge Uncorked in the fall of 2011. The small cooperative style wine tasting room started out pouring for small boutique wineries. “Uncorked offered a perfect platform for the creative ideas we envisioned for our first small business adventure,” Katie Lesley said. The vision of the Lesley’s quickly resulted in
changes with the interior within the first month of ownership. The bar was expanded to serve more customers, the wine club was created and a draught beer system was installed for selective craft beers and small batched microbrews and ales. Throughout the first couple years in business, Uncorked refined itself into the cooperative tasting room and craft beer public house that it is today. Currently, five of the six wineries it represents are solely poured in house. Most of the wines are 100 percent varietal and under 200 case total production. It features an extensive tasting selection of more than 30 wines, each representing
the local soil, climate and heritage of the vines. The wine list has something for everyone including 2011 Grady Pinot Noir, St. Sophia, Maley, Akin and Grady Zinfandels, 2011 Maley Petite Syrah as well as 2010 Grady Petite Syrah, 2008 and 2009 Grady Cabernet and a 2008 Akin Tannat. For white wine enthusiasts, one can sample the 2010 Akin and 2012 Grady Chardonnay, 2011 Akin Rose and a 2012 Grady Pinot Grigio. It also has a variety of sparkling wines which varie from a Weibel Grand Cuvee Almond, Peach, Pomegranate and Raspberry. The wineries at Woodbridge Uncorked represent how most Lodi wineries began; small, family wines produced from generations of family vineyards. Katie grew up among the local vines, picking grapes from her family’s vineyard as a young girl. Whereas Austin, began learning the complexities of winemaking from the ground up; eventually becoming the farm manager for Piazza Vineyards and the winemaker at Opus Winery. His passion can be seen by all when he is pouring wine at Woodbridge Uncorked. The owners also have design expertise and a gift for event planning, making sure special occasions at Woodbridge Uncorked are memorable. The boutique winery has a unique setting which can host private parties for up to 75. The tasting room and wine bar is located in a historic warehouse built in 1894. Uncorked is open Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 8p.m., Friday 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

Now the region produces more fine wine than Napa and Sonoma combined! The Lodi appellation is proudly blowing away the mists of anonymity that have shrouded local wines, allowing them to bask in the sunshine of worldwide recognition. We invite you to take a short ride and discover Lodi Wine Country for yourself.

S I P & S AV O R SEASON DELIGHT
Blueberry or the supernatural healer, you be the judge. This month’s season de-light just so happens to be the most anti-oxidant rich fruit and super food you’ll find on the market. Blueberries are, in themselves, one of nature’s strongest doc-tors. With countless benefits for cardiovascular, neurological, digestive, urinary, and pancreatic health, the saying should be that a serving of blueberries a day keeps the doctor away. Even more importantly, with bikini season upon us, a serv-ing of blueberries may just be that secret ingredient to shed belly weight and rock your summer bod. Because they have a low glycemic index, as well as, vitamins that diminish cravings this berry can double as dessert without ever ruining that calorie count. Now, there are several ways to prepare blueberries and just a few things to con-sider when purchasing them. First, delay washing them until right before you cook
them or eat them. They are coated in a protective bloom that when rinsed off can effect both the flavor and ability to ripen. Similarly, when shopping for blueber-ries, choose local and recently picked before all else. You should be able to find a surplus of blueberries at any farmers market this July. When purchasing, ensure that they are firm and look just slightly coated in a fine powder. That “dust” is part of their natural protective coat that locks in flavor and helps them to fully ripen. Also, as with most food, you will get the most benefits from raw berries.

SEASON DELIGHT
BLUEBERRIES BY EMILY VERBECK
LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | JULY 2014 67
BLUEBERRYLEMON CAKEINGREDIENTS:
CAKE1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature1 and 1/4 cups (250g) granulated sugar • 1/2 cup (100g) light brown sugar4 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour, careful not to overmeasure1 Tablespoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup (240ml) buttermilk • Zest + juice of 3 medium lemons*1 and 1/2 cups blueberries, fresh (258g) or non-thawed frozen (275g)1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
CREAM CHEESE FROSTING8 ounces (224g) full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature3 and 1/2 cups (420g) confectioners’ sugar1 - 2 Tablespoons (15-30ml) heavy cream1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Pinch salt
DIRECTIONS:Preheat the oven to 350F. Spray three 9x2 inch cake pans with non-stick spray. Set aside.
MAKE THE CAKE. Using a handheld or stand mixer with a paddle at-tachment, beat the butter on high until creamy - about 1 minute. Add granulated and brown sugars and beat on medium-high speed until creamed, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until everything is combined, about 2 full minutes. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Set aside. In a large sized bowl, toss together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Beat on low speed for 5 seconds, then add the milk, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Remove from the mixer and stir lightly until everything is just combined. Toss the blueberries in 1 Tablespoon of flour and fold into the batter. Batter is extremely thick. Do not overmix at any point. Overmixing will lend a tough, dense textured crumb. Spoon batter evenly into 3 prepared cake pans. If only using 2 cake pans, your bake time will be longer. Bake the three layers for about 21-26 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Mine took 21 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.
MAKE THE FROSTING. Using a handheld or stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat cream cheese and butter together on medium speed until no lumps remain, about 3 full minutes. Add confectioners’ sugar, 1 Tablespoon cream, vanilla extract, and salt with the mixer running on low. Increase to high speed and beat for 3 min-utes. Add 1 more Tablespoon of cream to thin out, if desired.
ASSEMBLE AND FROST. First, using a large serrated knife, trim the tops off the cake layers to create a flat surface. Place 1 layer on your cake stand. Evenly cover the top with cream cheese frosting. Top with 2nd layer, more frosting, then the third layer. Top with frosting and spread around the sides. The recipe doesn’t make a ton of frosting, just enough for a light frost. Top with blueberries or lemon garnish if desired. Refrigerate for at least 45 minutes before cutting or else the cake may fall apartas you cut. Make 1 day in advance if you’d like. Extras keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3days. http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2014/02/09/lemon-blueberry-layer-cake/

E T I Q U E T T E FINAL THOUGHT COCKTAILS
BY EMILY VERBECK
MANAGING YOUR
CocktailsSummer is here and clearly that means old fashions, cosmos, and watermelon margaritas, oh yes. But before you dive right into to summer cocktail hour, pay heed to the scorching Sacramento heat or you just might find yourself paying the piper for days to come. Whether you’re living off a balanced diet of wheat beers (that’s a grain right?) or simply enjoying 5 o’clock, take the following to heart, or more accurately, to your liver.
COOLING THE KOOL-AIDKeeping beverages cool in 100+ degree weather is a war zone. With ice melting more rapidly than the wicked witch, you’ll have to get creative. For days outdoors, invest in a decent cooler and try an ice block rather than cubes, it will remain frozen much longer.
WINE O’CLOCKDrink on the clock. It’s an old trick, but it never gets old. Learn your limits and set a timer between drinks. This prevents dehydration, as well as, keeps you from getting drunk enough to wander into the realm of bad choices.
DE-HYDRATION STATIONThink of your bar as a de-hydration station. For every drink that goes in, a glass of water ought to follow. Sure, that’s less fun, but trust me. Dehydration is even less pretty than a bad hangover. Avoid needing an IV from heatstroke and copious cocktails. For an extra oomph in hydration opt for coconut water.
HANGOVER EVASIONIf you want to avoid the wine headache, try Vitamin B and electrolytes before you start your party. A good way to know if you’re going to need the hair of the dog, the following day, is if you sweat a lot while outside. The more time in the heat, the less water in your body. Common sense, I know, but let’s just be clear, when there is booze involved sense sort of walks right out the door. No judgment.
RIDE THE BUZZ NOT THE FLOODThis falls hand in hand with wine o’clock. Take your time, enjoy the buzz but don’t overdo it. Don’t try to drink all your liquor at once. Didn’t anyone ever teach you it’s a marathon, not a sprint?
ROCK THE ROCKS Ice is your secret superpower when it comes to enjoying the company of both the heat and some spirits. As it melts, it will dilute your drink which not only slows you down but also sneaks in a little bit of extra water.
TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRDBeware the hard liquor. While it may seem harmless because the glass is smaller, one-two shots are the equivalent of a glass of wine or beer when it comes to dehydration. If you find yourself with free time, try to educate yourself on just how each type of drink can affect your body. Drink smart. Feel good.
COCKTAIL CORNERWhile there are many ways to avoid drinking to much or letting the summer heat effect you, sometimes you have to let go. Here are a few fun drink ideas to enjoy as you kick back in the shad and enjoy the summer: mango margaritas, pinot grigio and peach schnapps with fruit and sprite makes a killer sangria replacement, and try freezing fruit into your ice cubes for a playful twist on the rocks.
