No one defies stereotypes, generalizations or clichés more than Dr. Bertice Berry. Growing up poor in Wilmington, Delaware, the sixth of seven children, Dr. Berry was told by a high school teacher that she was “not college material.” She applied to several schools without any idea how she would pay the tuition if she were accepted. The day her application arrived at Jacksonville University in Florida, a wealthy benefactor called the admissions department looking for a potential student “who could swim if they had the right backing,” and might sink without it.
Dr. Berry graduated magna cum laude from Jacksonville where she was awarded the President’s Cup for leadership. She earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Kent State University at the age of 26. Dr. Berry left Kent to become an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedienne.
“When yOu WaLk With PurPOSe, yOu cOLLiDe With DeStiny.”

Two thousand dollars is a lot of money, and can be the key to purchasing a car. That’s what Davine Manson is hoping to do with the money she’s saved through the Family Financial Stability Initiative, a program at The Village funded by United Way Women’s Leadership Council.
Getting this far wasn’t easy for Davine. When she first heard about the program, “It sang to me. I was struggling financially and knew I needed to get back on track.”
But it was a rough start. Often, Davine would have to miss her appointments with Andrea Robinson, The Village’s financial recruiter/educator, because one of her children would need her or, worse, she would have a seizure that left her unable to drive. Seizures are a symptom of Davine’s traumatic brain injury, which resulted from a domestic violence incident.
“I was suffering from PTSD, depression, and thoughts of suicide,” said Davine. “I lost myself.” So she put off her dreams of financial stability to pursue months of therapy.
All the while, Andrea stayed in touch. And when Davine was feeling strong enough, Andrea was there to connect her with Dress for Success. Davine completed the program where she updated her resume and honed her interview and networking skills, which helped her secure a job as executive assistant to the Chief Medical Officer at Charter Oak Health Center. With a steady paycheck, Davine was able to refocus on the financial program and build her savings.
She is excited about her future. “This tragedy won’t get me,” she says. She plans to use her experience – and her triumph – to help others in her situation.
“thiS trageDy WOn’t get me.”

In Connecticut, more than one in four households have earnings above the Federal Poverty Level but below a basic cost-of-living threshold. Despite working hard, these households struggle to make ends meet. United Way calls this demographic aLice, an acronym for asset Limited, income constrained, employed.
Combined, aLice and Poverty households comprise 38 percent of households in the state, revealing that more than one in three Connecticut households cannot afford basic needs such as housing, child care, food, healthcare and transportation.

“Without the program I probably would have just been stuck at my job because I can’t really afford to pay for college, and pay for all my daughter’s things, and all the bills.
I have now finished my first semester at Central, and I was able to pay for the classes. My goal is to have a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and hopefully be able
to get a more lucrative job so I can help my family.” - Barbara
“I started off by making a calendar of certain things I needed to stop doing and certain things that I needed to do. Once I put that into place, I started to manage how to do things
differently. I started paying my bills on time so the interest rate wasn’t going higher. I was saving up for a new vehicle, and I was able to purchase the vehicle.”
- tina
“My biggest takeaway from the program is that, even if you make mistakes, things can get better. You do have another chance. The financial literacy program is an
amazing program — not only for me, but for my family. It has changed our lives.”- keishla
