Captain William HobsonHobson arrived in New Zealand on the 29th Jan 1840.
Hobson was the governor – his job was to get the Maori chiefs to sign a Treaty with British.
A letter of invitation was sent out to Maori to meet with Hobson.
PROBLEM: he did not have any examples of how to make a treaty!!!
So he called on James Busby…

James BusbyHobson wrote one draft treaty but…
James Busby (he was in charge of making sure the British people behaved
themselves) DID NOT think what Hobson had written was good enough. So he changed it.
On the 3rd of Feb 1840, Busby drafted a Treaty.
PROBLEM: it’s only in English!

Henry WilliamsHenry Williams (a missionary)
was given the treaty on the evening of the 4th Feb. The treaty needed to be translated into Maori for the chiefs the next day.
Henry Williams knew the Maori language well, but really wanted Maori to sign the treaty. He thought it would be best for Maori.
PROBLEMS: - Not enough time to translate- Used Maori words that made
it the treaty sound really good for Maori
- No Maori were consulted on the wording.
