‘Green Schools encourage action-oriented thinking’
More scrutiny required
KUWAIT CITY, Oct 18, (KUNA): The GreenSchools initiative pilots active-learningapproaches that encourage investigative andaction-oriented thinking that enables learn-ers to improve the wellbeing of society,Minister of Education and Minister of HigherEducation Essa Al-Bader stressed here onSunday.
The minister made this remark at the opening of aregional meeting to set up Green Schools in the GCCcountries and Yemen.
Green Schools are an initiative for sustainable educationorganized by the UNESCO’s office in Kuwait and Al-SaadFoundation for Knowledge and Scientific Research.
This initiative promotes education as a tool to developlearners who are both capable and willing to respond to envi-ronmental issues in their communities and in the world atlarge, Al-Essa added.
On his part, Director of Kuwait National Commission forUNESCO Dr. Ahmad Al-Enizi stressed the importance ofraising awareness and creating wider perspectives forimproving human life where poverty could be none existentand where environment could be protected from industrialand technological side effects.
The guidelines of sustainable development have alreadybeen drawn by international community, pointing out thateveryone agrees that it can only be attained through econom-ic and social growth and protection of natural resources.
Green Schools initiative is still under study and it requiresmore scientific scrutiny before it can be applied in real life,he added.
Director of UNESCO Regional Office in Doha AnnaPaolini said that the Green Schools initiative aims to giveeducators and students ownership of the issues needing reso-lution and a sense of empowerment over the environmentalchallenges they face.

‘Much work needed to revampconditions in the private sector’KUWAIT CITY, Oct 18, (KUNA): Much more work isrequired for revamping conditions in the private sectorand making it lucrative and competitive, said Minister ofSocial Affairs and Labor and Minister of State forPlanning Affairs and Development Hind Al-Sabeeh onSunday.
Minister Al-Sabeeh, in a statement upon her departureto Qatar where she would take part in the 32nd session ofthe GCC labor ministers, indicated that Kuwait is exam-ining expertise of the other GCC countries and interna-tional agencies in implementing plans of renovating theprivate sector.
On the GCC meeting agenda, she indicated that it tack-les creation of new jobs in the member states, “becausethere is no option other than depending on the nationallabor force for achieving economic and sustainable devel-opment in the regional countries.” Minister Al-Sabeehalso indicated that she was pinning high hopes on herGCC counterparts “for taking the needed decisions forboosting the labor markets in the Gulf in terms of gover-nance, mapping out effective policies and contributing tothe domestic product by diversifying income resources.”The schedule includes other issues, such as a report con-cerning GCC citizens of special needs, topics concerningcooperative stores and examining NGOs’ economic andsocial role in the GCC countries.
She noted that tackling such social issues is necessaryfor they serve the combat against terrorism, violence andextremism.

100 companies rectify statuses: Director ofNational Personnel Development at Manpower PublicAuthority Abdullah Al-Jafour disclosed that 100 companieshave modified their statuses using the organizational proce-dures of the authority after their files were suspended,reports Al-Rai daily.
He said some contracting companies are serious aboutcomplying with the laws particularly the provision relatedto the percentage of national personnel to be employed intheir governmental projects.
Al-Jafour explained that the companies which are notcommitted to the law particularly the percentage of nation-al personnel will have to pay KD100 annual charges foreach transaction of renewing or issuing work permit foreach non-Kuwaiti employee. In addition, these companieswill not be allowed to bid for tenders of government author-ities.
He added that the automation system managed to control85 percent of the violations and problems which were tak-ing place in the past, particularly those related to the evalu-ation of need for personnel which companies apply forbringing and hiring expatriate personnel.❑ ❑ ❑
MoCI requests for site: Ministry of Commerce andIndustry has requested Kuwait Municipality to allocate asite to establish a market for used heavy duty vehiclesand engines. Location of the 500,000 square meters usedvehicle market will be sited soon, reports Al-Shaheddaily.
In a letter to the State Minister for Municipality AffairsEssa Al-Kanderi, the Minister of Commerce and IndustryYousef Al-Ali said both ministries will sustain the currentcooperation and coordination to establish the market forused vehicles to wade off shortcomings observed in themarket for several years. This will help the market to oper-ate and provide services in a modern way matching thestandard of similar markets. He recommended each type ofvehicle will have its own location to create uniqueness inthe market.
He explained the mechanism will prevent a scenariowhereby vehicles are seen in their large numbers at theroadsides where individuals and corporate bodies try topurchase them for construction and contracting purpos-es. He observed the people involved in such transac-tions are over stressed due to lack of proper arrange-ment.
