HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!
Curriculum Corner This past fortnight, we have been focusing on the V in VCOP- Vocabulary. Students have worked hard to not only be detectives, but be word smiths; finding interesting words in their own work, in other texts, alongside ways they can "up-level" their vocabulary (especially by using more interesting synonyms). As students read, they note 'WOW words' on a special bookmark, here is a sample of what they've found:
Gruesome, abruptly, irritatingly (Matilda)
Hysterics, delightful, suspended, magnificent (Bailey S)
Anarchic, goggling, excruciating, vivid, comatose (Isobella)
This term our whole school literacy
focus has been on narrative writing and VCOP -Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. The students have been a part of some explicit teaching lessons focused on these topics. Students have been working hard to remember the different names of punctuation, identify WOW words (new and interesting words) in the
books we have been reading and learning about connective words. Next week we start our focus on ‘Ollie Opener’ a character from our VCOP whose focus is on exciting openers in sentences and stories. If you hear you student talking about this at home, praise them and ask them to explain their thinking. You can even work with them to identify punctuation, WOW words and connective words in their take home books. We are looking forward to learning about the last area of VCOP over the next two weeks.

STUDENT REPORTING
SENTRAL—NILMA PRIMARY SCHOOL Student Reporting system information for parents to access the Sentral Reporting system. All parents will receive a unique password in an envelope next week. The instructions to access the portal are on page 5 of the newsletter. The Sentral reporting system will keep parents up to date with student absences, newsletters and general information regarding Nilma PS. Should you have any queries regarding the access to this portal, please contact the Office. Over the coming weeks we will have several computers available for parents to use. We have lots of parents at school early and would welcome parents to come into the staff room and be shown how to access your child’s portfolio and reports.
STUDENT LEAD CONVERSATIONS ON LEARNING—PORTFOLIO SHARING TIME This year students will also be encouraging students to take a part in the reporting to parents on student achievement process. Parents will be encouraged to come to school on the parent teacher discussion day 15-30 minutes early so that children will be able to access the school SENTRAL information with parents to view their portfolio pieces and have a discussion with their parents on what they have been able to achieve. This will be a new component of our reporting process and we hope this will also support parents to take time to celebrate the achievements of their children. These portfolios will grow as we learn to utilise the SENTRAL system to full capacity. Ms Berkelmans will be on hand in the open learning area to support this new process.
PARENT/TEACHER DISCUSSIONS The Parent Teacher Discussions will be held in the last week of this term as part of our reporting to parents on student achievement. Parents will receive Student Reports on Monday 26th June and then attend Parent Teacher Discussions on Thursday 29th June between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Parents will be able to access the student Digital Portfolios too. All children will be required to attend school on this day. KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO COME IN UP TO 30 MINUTES EARLIER than your appointment time—So as to be able to access your child/rens portfolio/s and celebrate achievements in learning. The booking form that was sent home with last weeks newsletter will need to be returned by Thursday 15th June. Confirmation of times will be sent back to parents on Thursday 22nd June . If you require a new booking form please contact the Office.
MATHEMATICS
MATHLETICS From May 16 to June 16 students have been signed up to Mathletics. Students have the opportunity to complete Mathematics activities for home learning. Mathletics has a full set of curriculum-aligned activities covering all topics and themes of mathematics covered throughout primary school. Students can test their skills in a live online maths game and compete against others from right across the world. Mathletics individual user name and password can be found in the each student’s diary.
OPEN END MATHS TASKS The Ruby Red students have recently participated in open-ended maths tasks. Rather than maths concepts and problems with only fixed answers, students are exposed to tasks that involve many correct answers, solved in a variety of ways. ‘When you look out the window you see 20 legs! What do you see?’ Was the recent task where students could use any combination of animals or insects to get a total number of twenty legs.

Nilma PS is investigating different ways to continue to effectively communicate with families. One method we are introducing over the next semester is by email. NPS is also conducting a parent survey which will be given to families in the form of a link, to be completed online. This link will be sent to families via the email address that you provide to us. We understand that not all families have access to an email address and we will continue to provide them with the current form/s of communication methods with you.

Chaplain’s Chat No. 68
Last week I wrote about the 5 ways that children (and adults) understand and receive love- through physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts and acts of service.
The first one, physical touch, refers to any kind of physical contact we have with our children – from hugging and kissing to a gentle touch on the back, arm or shoulder. Physical touch is one of love’s strongest voices, so all children need this expression of love.
Research studies over many years have found that babies who are held, hugged and kissed, develop a healthier emotional life than those who don’t have this experience. You may remember that each time you picked up your baby the way he or she snuggled their head against your shoulder and even patted you in return. It’s wonderful for both of you.
For some children physical touch is their most important love language – it really fills up their emotional tanks. Next week we’ll look at ways to let your child/ren experience love through touch.

Students across the school participated in a ‘Mindfulness Morning’ at NPS on Friday 26th May as part of our Education Week celebrations. The morning started with a healthy breakfast for all homegroups, then students participated in a range of activities including yoga, meditation and a colouring in competition. We were lucky enough to have the Warragul Gazette come and visit us on the morning of the 26th and we have had a feature article in this weeks Gazette! (Tuesday 6th June 2017 - page 39) Thank you to Mrs Evans for coordinating the event - it was a very relaxing and enjoyable morning!
