MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE SPECIALIST TRAINING As you may or may not be aware, Nilma Primary School was fortunate to receive funding in 2016 for a Mathematics and Science Specialist program. Over the next few days, both Monica Berkelmans and Kathryn Evans will be in Melbourne receiving training. Mrs Amanda Buckler and Miss Tara Burke will be teaching at the school during this time. We are looking forward to further develop our Mathematics and Science programs with the new research.

SCHOOL POLICIES FOR REVIEW We will be reviewing several school policies each term. I would appreciate if there are any parents who would like to work with me on reviewing these policies at the draft stage before we provide the school community the opportunity to read and review, then send to School Council for ratification. Please let me know if you can help.

WARRAGUL SHOW Nilma PS will be submitting entries into the Warragul Show. Mrs Hodge is busy preparing the produce from the school vegetable garden to display at the Warragul Show. If you are heading to the show this weekend, please make sure you call in and see the entries!

ANAPHYLACTIC INFORMATION Due to changes with enrolments, we will not be changing our policy at this stage with regards to Anaphylaxis, and the nut situation. Thank you for being considerate of the situation—as I have said, it is important to take the time to be able to step back and review the situation and then move forward as needed. PARENT TEACHER DISCUSSIONS The Parent Teacher Discussions for the Red, Blue & Green Homegroup will be held next Thursday 9th March. Confirmation times were sent home with all students last week.

PANCAKE DAY Last Tuesday our taste buds

enjoyed the delicious flavours of various pancakes made by teams of students in a ‘Nilma Kitchen Rules’ cook off. We had pikelet and crepe recipes with chocolate, banana and blueberries to add flavour as well as cream and ice cream toppings to create a scrumptious dessert! Students worked in teams to follow the instructional text (recipes) to collaborate and work together to achieve the meal. Thanks to Amanda Bucker for bringing the Pancake

Day together and all the education support staff who

supported Nilma Kitchen Rules. It was very evident we

have so many confident and capable students who are

developing a healthy attitude to food.

FARM WORLD EXCURSION

The whole school excursion to Farm World will be held

on the last day of Term 1—Friday 31st March. Please

see Page 4 for further details.

HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!

On Tuesday it was Pancake Day!

We had to try and make two perfect

pancakes to present to three judges.

The judges were Sharon S, Ms

Sutherland and Vicki. My group

made banana and choc chip

pancakes, they were very hard to

flip because the chocolate had

melted and gone everywhere! In the end,

everyone won and we all got half and an icy

pole.

I ran 5 laps of the oval with a trundle wheel to

measure a kilometre. One lap is approximately

200 meters. I would have thought 4 laps would

be a kilometre, but it is five.

Pancake Day

Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday—the first day of Lent. It is celebrated 47 days before

Easter every year. Most Christian based countries celebrate by making pancakes on this day—hence

Pancake Day. We had a fabulous time making choc chip, plain and berry pancakes. We followed a

procedural text to make our recipe. What a fantastic day!

On Tuesday we had Pancake Day. We

cooked pikelets. I was with Natasha,

Oliver, Jade and Deklan. We mixed

self raising flour, sugar, milk and an

egg in a big bowl. We used a wooden

spoon. We put it in a pan and when it

bubbled we turned the pikelets over.

Then we put them on a plate to eat.

WEST GIPPSLAND RURAL SPORTS All students in Year 3-6 will be participating in the West Gippsland Rural School Sports Day. The Athletic sports will be held on Friday 17th March. Students are to be dropped off at the venue by 9.00am and collected by 3pm. Parents are most welcome to come along for the day and support students. A reminder to parents that your child’s supervising teacher must be informed if your child is leaving the group at any stage during the day. Eg. taking to canteen, early departure, toilet, etc. Students will need hats, lunch and drinks for the day. A canteen will be at the venue for children wishing to buy lunch. The school will supply shelters for students to leave their bags un-der and to sit under during breaks. Drinks can be carried around during the morning events. Attached to the newsletter are permission forms, which must be signed and returned to the office by next Wednesday 8th March 2017.

WOORABINDA CAMP

Nilma PS has 7 students attending the Somers/Woorabinda Camp on Monday March 6th until Friday March 10th. Students selected for

this camp are: Sheree Casey Wilson, Matilda Dent, Ashley Griggs, Savannah Salsbury-Challons, Bailey Stephens, Olivia Addison & Piper

Bundle. Information regarding travel arrangements will be sent home with the newsletter today.

SCHOOL FUNDRAISER

Attached to the newsletter is information regarding our School Fundraiser Movie Night. Tickets can be purchased at the office or on the

night. Please contact Sara Cogo for more information.

FARM WORLD EXCURSION

The Farm World Excursion will be held on Friday 31st March for the whole school. This will be the last day of Term 4. Parents are to drop

students at Farm World, on Burnt Store Rd, Lardner at 8.45am and pick up from the same venue at 2.00pm. The Mothers Day fundraiser

will be paying for the cost of this excursion. More information will follow next week. Attached to the newsletter are permission forms

which will need to be signed and returned to the school by Friday 17th March 2017.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION

Silver Coin Trail

On the 7-9 April Mrs Buckler is taking part in the ‘Oxfam Trailwalker’ Melbourne event.

It is a challenging 100km walk through Warburton, the Dandenong Ranges and Melbourne’s outer sub-

urbs. Part of a team of 4, Mrs Bucklers team is called ‘Graphite Rocks’. Our team goal is to complete

the challenge within 27 hours, walking overnight.

Oxfam Trailwalker is not just a tough physical and mental challenge — it’s also a rewarding fundraising

challenge. With every step they take, teams raise money to help fight poverty around the world. More

Nilma Primary School is hosting a ‘Silver Coin Trail’ to help raise funds that will change lives.

All students and Nilma Primary Community Members are

encouraged to send along silver coins for a donation

towards this great cause. Check the car, check down the

back of the couch, search and find those lost and lonely

coins and send them along. Start collecting and sending

in your 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces. Let’s see how long a trail we can make? Each Home group will

collect their silver coins ready to line them up next Wednesday the 8th of March. Which Home group

will have the longest trail? What will the total length of our trails be? How much money can we raise?

CHAPLAINS’ CHAT This week a quick chat about helping kids deal with loss again with Michael Grose as our source. Many kids experience many different kinds of loss, including a friend who moves away, the death of a treasured pet, and the death of a loved one. Although death is the most permanent loss we face, there are other forms of loss that can be devastating such as, moving home and family separation. Sudden and unexpected loss doesn’t give much time to adjust. Anticipated death, separation or move, is easier for kids as they have had time to think, mourn, talk things through with you and anticipate. It’s the sudden loss that has more confusion and distress. Here are some general guidelines when children experience significant loss such as the death of someone close to them:

1.Talk about the death and loss. Children do not benefit from ‘putting it out of their minds”. Share important facts about the event and answer questions at their level (not as if you’re talking to your closest friend and getting down to the ‘nitty gritty’, that’s not helpful for the child. Attempt to get a sense of what the kids thing and feel about the situation. Invite them to talk about their feelings regarding the event and be guided by their responses.

2. Share some of your own feelings and thoughts. Sometimes children may appear not to have heard anything you have said (but they have) so be prepared to repeat the same information again and again as kids don’t often process information when they are distressed.

3.Reassure kids that feelings of sadness and helplessness are normal. Knowledge of the grieving process can be reassuring to kids and can provide hope that they will not always feel the way they do.

4.Involve children in the rituals, including the funeral. This will help them move through the grieving process (although they should never be forced to). If ‘not wanting to’ is the case, then talk about how the service went and encourage the children to create their own ritual or memorial service (perhaps in a favourite spot in the garden) . At all times be empathetic and let them know that you feel sad too and sometimes it makes you angry or lose your patience too. Have a great weekend all.

Dance Instructor Sarah from Studio Samsara, bought energising and funky hip hop

moves to Nilma Primary School today. Students laughed, smiled and giggled as they

learnt new dance moves and put them together to perform a short dance in front of

their peers.

Stretching and warming up to a fantastic selection of music, Sarah then introduced

students to different movements, focusing on direction and balance, using separate

body parts and repeating actions with opposite arms and legs.

It was fantastic to see the high levels of energy students presented during each dance

session.

Some students started off a little shy and timid but soon joined in the fun and left the

session with a smile on their face and some new dance moves to show off.

A big thank you to Sarah for such an exciting and energetic dance incursion.
