KAY’s KORNER
SMART SNACKINGSnacking is a great way to keep your diet in check. Mostsnacks are typically high in fat, salt or sugar and basically of empty calories. That results in you being famished againin 60 minutes or so, because your snack had no realnutritional value. An ideal snack would be filling and leaveyou with additional energy. The way to do that is to selectsnacks with good protein and some carbohydrates.
The protein in your snack helps to keep you feelingsatisfied because protein is slower to digest and keepshunger at bay. Many protein foods from diary providegood sources of Vitamin D and Calcium for bone health.Carbohydrate foods can help keep the blood sugar steady.Too much sugar in your snacks will give you an energyboost, in about 30 minutes, you will come crashing down,

craving some other sweet snack to follow that one.Thankfully, high protein and low carbohydrate snacks donot cause that kind of crash effect.
Keep cravings, over eating and crashing away by addinggood healthy lower calorie snacks to your everydayroutine. If your meals are many hours apart, you mayexperience hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.
Whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes provide richamounts of fiber – an indigestible carbohydrate thatpromotes digestive function and fullness. If you findyourself snacking on salty snacks or sugary sweets inresponse to daytime hunger, opt for a fiber-rich foodinstead.
Drink water with your snack. This will help you feel fulllonger until your next meal time. Munching when you arenot really hungry can rack up lots of extra calories.
Why Snack?˜ Keep hunger away˜ Reduce headaches and mental confusion (It could be
your blood sugar)˜ Reduce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)˜ Improve your mood, low sugar levels can make you
cranky and irritable˜ Weight management - nutritious snacks may help you
manage your appetite˜ Gives energy and strength through the day
What to look for in a healthy snack:T Keep snack calories under 150 calories per snackT Good amount of fiber: 3 or more grams per snack,
whole fruits are full of fiber and are low caloriesT Choose a snack with protein and carbohydratesT Pick foods high in Vitamin D and Calcium for bone
health like diary.
Snacking Ideas:i Nuts - nuts, one of the best low carb snacks, are a fine
source of protein and good fat.i Cheese - good protein choice pick low fat cheese like
mozzarella cubed, sliced or string cheese.i Low-fat yogurt - yogurt contains protein and calciumi Boiled eggs - A boiled egg supplies protein and it is
one of the better low carb snacks.
