BriefInstituteOverviewTothisdayPurdueUniversityisdrivenbyitsoriginalmandateunderthe1862MorrillLandGrantActtoteachagricultureandthe"mechanicarts”–or,intoday’swords,“engineering.”Purdueisknownthroughouttheworldforitsexcellentbusinessprogramsanditsfocusoncommercialization;lastyearalone,40startupswereincubatedatPurdue,25ofwhichwerebasedonPurdueintellectualpropertyandPurduerankssixteenthintheworldforthenumberofuniversityU.S.utilitypatents.Purdue’sMandelaWashingtonFellowshipInstituteseekstoempowerandequipFellowswithnewskillstobecomemoreeffectiveentrepreneurs,withafocusonagricultureandengineering.Structurally,eachweekoftheInstitutewillembodyadifferentbusinessandentrepreneurshipthemethatbuildsuponthepriorweek’sthemesandthenculminatesinafinalweekofpitches,presentations,andreportingoflearningoutcomes.IntegratingtheInstitute’ssub-themesofagricultureandengineering,eachweekwillalsohaveadistincttechnicalthemerelatedtoagriculturalandengineeringinnovationsandbusinessopportunitiesInstituteObjectivesandGoals

● Developasharedunderstandingofthegroup’sstrengths,weaknesses,andcreateastrongespritdecorps;

● Reviewbasicbusinessandentrepreneurshipprinciples;● DevelopabusinessplanfollowingtheLaunchBoxcurriculum;● Explorechallengesandopportunitieswithregardtoagriculturalandengineeringinnovation,

includingpost-harvest,foodprocessing,agriculturalmechanization,bioenergy,manufacturing,andinformationandcommunicationtechnologies;

● Refineanddemonstratepresentationdeliveryskills;and● Developanunderstandingoftheinterconnectednessofbusiness,agriculture,engineering,and

environmentalandsocialsustainability.ThisprogramagendawillprovideinformationonwhatyouwillbedoingwhileintheUnitedStates.Thisincludesacademicsessions,sitevisits,communityserviceactivities,andculturalexperiencesthatwillexpandyourcurrentknowledgeaboutU.S.approachestoBusinessandEntrepreneurship.Itisexpectedthatyouwillbringyourpersonalexpertiseontherealitiesinyourcommunitiesintotheprogramand

thatyouwillreflectonhowtheU.S.approachesandorganizationsexploredmightprovideyouwithcreativeideasforsolvingchallengesthatyouface.Youwillnotethatsomesessionsarenotdirectlyapplicabletoyourcurrentworkorpositioninyourhomecountry.Thisisintentional,astheMandelaWashingtonFellowshipaimstoempowerFellowswithbroadbasedknowledgethatwillhelptoprepareyouforleadershipoutsideofyourcurrentfocus.YouhavebeenselectedfortheFellowshipbecauseofyourknowledgeandleadershipinyourcurrentarea,buttheFellowshipisrootedinthebeliefthatasyourcareeradvances,youwillneedabroaderknowledgeset.ThisFellowshipprovidesyouwiththeuniqueopportunitytodelveintoothersectorsandexploretopicsthatyouwouldnotbeexposedtoduringthecourseofyourdailywork.Wehopethatthiscrossdisciplinaryapproachwillalsohelpyoudevelopcreativesolutionstochallengesthatyouarefacinginyourdailylife.AcademicContent:SiteVisits:DiscoveryPark,IndianapolisStateHouse,TuttleOrchards,Husk,IndianaStateMuseum,IndianapolisFeverBasketballGame,Chicago(SpecificsitesTBA),Subaru(Lafayette),AnimalScienceResearchandEducationCenter(ASREC),AgronomyCenterforResearchandEducation(ACRE),K105WASKRadioStation,andDowAgroSciences.LeadershipSessions:LaunchBoxisasuccessfulprogramcreatedbythePurdueFoundrytohelpinventors/foundersfindthevaluepropositionoftheirideabyexploringpotentialmarkets,customers,andfinancialmodels.FellowswillmovethroughadaptedLaunchBoxmodulesusingtheirownagricultureandengineering-relatedbusinessideasorinnovations.LaunchBoxsessionswillbefacilitatedbyanEntrepreneurinResidenceandotherFoundrystaff.Fellowswillidentifytheirinnovation/concept,andfacultymentorsandpeercollaboratorswithcomplementaryinterestswillbematchedwithFellowstoprovideimportantconnectionstocampusandcommunityresources.CommunityService:FellowswilllearntheimportanceofcivicengagementtoPurdueandU.S.societyandhavetheopportunitytoengageinweeklycommunityserviceopportunitieswithavarietyoforganizations.Followingeachweek’scommunityserviceopportunity,Institutestaffwillfacilitateareflectionperiodto“unpack”theexperience.Communityservicepartners,abriefdescriptionoftheorganizations,andnatureoftheserviceactivityplannedwitheachpartnerfollows.Notethateffortsweremadetoselectsomeorganizationsthatareconnectedtothesubthemesofagricultureandengineering.CivicandCulturalActivities:PurdueislocatedinaquintessentialAmericancommunity;Fellowswillbenefitfromsmall-townAmericanhospitalityinadditiontotherichandstimulatingintellectualuniversitycommunity.PurdueislocatedinWestLafayette,Indiana,atownofapproximately30,000,justacrosstheWabashRiverfromLafayette,atownof70,000.PurdueisonehourfromIndianapolis

andtwohoursfromChicagobycar,soinadditiontoenjoyingthenumeroussmalltownfestivalsandcampuseventsandactivitiesofthegreaterLafayettearea,adaytriptoIndianapolis,andanovernighttriptoChicagowillbehighlightsoftheInstitute.Inasocialcapacity,Fellowswillbeprovidedwithopportunitiestoengageinnumerouscommunityevents.WewillshareacalendarofcommunityeventsinJuneandJuly.TheTasteofTippecanoe,FourthofJulyfireworks,andartfairsarejustafewofthepossibilities.FellowswillalsopartakeinanAmericanhomehospitalitydinnerinwhichFellows(ingroupsoftwotofour)willbeinvitedtodinnerinlocalhomes.Fellowswillbeprovidedwithascheduleofsuggestedculturalactivitiesfortheirentirestayandwewillcoordinateoutingsandtransportationtoatleasttwoeventsperweek.MandelaWashingtonFellowshipSummitPreparation:SummitPreparationsessionswillbeusedtogiveFellowsachancetopracticetheirnetworkingandpublicspeakingskills.AvarietyofspeakerswillbeinvitedtofacilitatetheseclassroomsessionsandwillbeinvolvedinguidingtheFellowsastheypreparefortheSummit.TheFellowswillbebrokenintosmallergroupsandwillparticipateinexercisesthatareintendedtohelpthempracticetheirpitches,gainconfidencegivingtheirignitetalks,andstrengthentheirnetworkingskills.EachweekwillbuildontheskillsthattheFellowspracticedduringthepreviousweekandwilladdresstheweeklythemeoftheInstitute.

SummitPreparationisusedforpreparefortheMandelaWashingtonFellowshipSummit,whichisanexcitingopportunityforFellowstonetworkwithU.S.governmentofficialsandleadersinthepublicandprivatesectors,andotherFellows.TheSummitwillincludeavarietyofevents,suchaspanelpresentationsandsmallgroupdiscussions.SummitPrepSession(90mins,eachweek):SummitPreparationsessionswillbeusedtogivefellowsachancetopracticetheirnetworkingandpublicspeakingskills.AvarietyofspeakerswillbeinvitedtofacilitatetheseclassroomsessionsandwillbeinvolvedinguidingtheFellowsastheypreparefortheSummit.TheFellowswillbebrokenintosmallergroupsandwillparticipateinexercisesthatareintendedtohelpthempracticetheirpitches,gainconfidencegivingtheirignitetalks,andstrengthentheirnetworkingskills.EachweekwillbuildontheskillsthattheFellowspracticedduringthepreviousweekandwilladdresstheweeklythemeoftheInstitute.
