BriefInstituteOverviewTothisdayPurdueUniversityisdrivenbyitsoriginalmandateunderthe1862MorrillLandGrantActtoteachagricultureandthe"mechanicarts”–or,intoday’swords,“engineering.”Purdueisknownthroughouttheworldforitsexcellentbusinessprogramsanditsfocusoncommercialization;lastyearalone,40startupswereincubatedatPurdue,25ofwhichwerebasedonPurdueintellectualpropertyandPurduerankssixteenthintheworldforthenumberofuniversityU.S.utilitypatents.Purdue’sMandelaWashingtonFellowshipInstituteseekstoempowerandequipFellowswithnewskillstobecomemoreeffectiveentrepreneurs,withafocusonagricultureandengineering.Structurally,eachweekoftheInstitutewillembodyadifferentbusinessandentrepreneurshipthemethatbuildsuponthepriorweek’sthemesandthenculminatesinafinalweekofpitches,presentations,andreportingoflearningoutcomes.IntegratingtheInstitute’ssub-themesofagricultureandengineering,eachweekwillalsohaveadistincttechnicalthemerelatedtoagriculturalandengineeringinnovationsandbusinessopportunitiesInstituteObjectivesandGoals
● Developasharedunderstandingofthegroup’sstrengths,weaknesses,andcreateastrongespritdecorps;
● Reviewbasicbusinessandentrepreneurshipprinciples;● DevelopabusinessplanfollowingtheLaunchBoxcurriculum;● Explorechallengesandopportunitieswithregardtoagriculturalandengineeringinnovation,
includingpost-harvest,foodprocessing,agriculturalmechanization,bioenergy,manufacturing,andinformationandcommunicationtechnologies;
● Refineanddemonstratepresentationdeliveryskills;and● Developanunderstandingoftheinterconnectednessofbusiness,agriculture,engineering,and
environmentalandsocialsustainability.ThisprogramagendawillprovideinformationonwhatyouwillbedoingwhileintheUnitedStates.Thisincludesacademicsessions,sitevisits,communityserviceactivities,andculturalexperiencesthatwillexpandyourcurrentknowledgeaboutU.S.approachestoBusinessandEntrepreneurship.Itisexpectedthatyouwillbringyourpersonalexpertiseontherealitiesinyourcommunitiesintotheprogramand

PriortojoiningPurdue,Dr.MosesonwasanAAASScience&TechnologyPolicyFellowattheUSAgencyforInternationalDevelopment(USAID).AspartoftheHigherEducationSolutionsNetwork(HESN)programwithintheUSGlobalDevelopmentLab,hecatalyzedMIT'sInternationalDevelopmentInnovationNetwork(IDIN)-includingactingasaDesignFacilitatorinBotswana-andsupportedMSU'sGlobalCenterforFoodSystemsInnovation(GCFSI).Hefurtherco-ledtheHESNstudentengagementworkinggroup,servedonthecoreteamforGlobalInnovationExchange,andrepresentedUSAIDontheWhiteHouse(OSTP)inter-agencyworkinggroupforMaking.
