Spotted Sun Orchid
Plant Name: Miltoniopsis Lillian Nakamoto
Exhibitor: Ken Haase Housing: Orchid is grown in a covered shade house with 60%
shade on roof, including solar weave and 50% on sides. Four fans run
during daylight hours to circulate hotter air that gathers in the gable
roof. This orchid is a cool grower and requires low light so it is
positioned under the benches and about 150mm above the gravel floor.
This helps to accommodate for the low light and cooler conditions
required.
Feeding: Orchid is fertilised using Horticultural Solutions HSO22
and HSO12 alternating fortnightly between both 12 months of the year.
Rate is 1 gram per litre. On alternate fortnight orchids are foliar fed
using HSO22 and HSO12 at same rate above but also adding Amino K
and Hy-san to the foliar feed.
Watering: In summer watering is around once every three days to
once per week in winter. However take note of the prevailing weather
conditions and alter the frequency depending on whether it is extremely
hot summer days of cooler than normal conditions. Make sure when
you water that you water the top of the pot and run water through the
pot. The orchid house is also misted regularly especially on hot days.
Potting Medium: Potting medium is sphagnum moss and small bark.
This helps to keep the roots moist and cool.
Any other Cultural Notes: The gravel under the bench is watered 2 to
3 times per day to keep the humidity high and the temperature around
the orchids on the cool side.

Overview of talk
Introduction – what are viruses.
Symptoms of infection.
Transmission.
Control.
Diagnosis.
What are viruses?
• Strands of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) protected by a protein shell.
• Can only replicate within living host cells.
• Can remain intact and infectious outside host cells, but only for short periods – hours to months.
• At least 21 different orchid viruses are known from Australia.
• Three most common viruses are Odontoglossum ringspot virus, Orchid fleck virus and Cymbidium mosaic virus (50% of all infections)

Transmission
Odontoglossum ringspot virus and Cymbidium mosaic virus only spread by contact, e.g.
‒Handling plants. ‒Leaves rubbing against each other. ‒Sap-contaminated secateurs. ‒Dividing infected plants.
Orchid fleck virus is transmitted by flat mites, Brevipalpus spp.
Control
Infected plants cannot be cured!!
Prevention is the key to control.
‒Discard infected plants.
‒Buy from reputable sources.
‒Apply quarantine measures to new plants
–Treat for pests, keep separated until new growth emerges.
‒Arrange plants on bench so they don’t touch.
‒Minimise handling.
‒Decontaminate secateurs with 1% bleach or 10% trisodium phosphate (TSP, from paint shop).

Diagnosis
Symptoms – but some plants have symptomless infections, e.g. vanilla orchid, Epidendrum. Submit samples to GrowHelp for electron microscopy ($130 per test):
https://www.daff.qld.gov.au/plants/health-pests-diseases/plant-pest-diagnostic-services/grow-help
Use Orchid ImmunoStrips (Agdia), but only test for Cymbidium mosaic virus and Odontoglossum ringspot virus ($201.50 for 25 tests = $8.05 per test). Purchase from TASAG ELISA Testing Services.
Agdia Orchid Immunostrip
Positive for ORSV and CymMV Positive for CymMV
