Overview of talk

Introduction – what are viruses.

Symptoms of infection.

Transmission.

Control.

Diagnosis.

What are viruses?

• Strands of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) protected by a protein shell.

• Can only replicate within living host cells.

• Can remain intact and infectious outside host cells, but only for short periods – hours to months.

• At least 21 different orchid viruses are known from Australia.

• Three most common viruses are Odontoglossum ringspot virus, Orchid fleck virus and Cymbidium mosaic virus (50% of all infections)

Dendrobium sp.

Transmission

Odontoglossum ringspot virus and Cymbidium mosaic virus only spread by contact, e.g.

‒Handling plants. ‒Leaves rubbing against each other. ‒Sap-contaminated secateurs. ‒Dividing infected plants.

Orchid fleck virus is transmitted by flat mites, Brevipalpus spp.

Control

Infected plants cannot be cured!!

Prevention is the key to control.

‒Discard infected plants.

‒Buy from reputable sources.

‒Apply quarantine measures to new plants

–Treat for pests, keep separated until new growth emerges.

‒Arrange plants on bench so they don’t touch.

‒Minimise handling.

‒Decontaminate secateurs with 1% bleach or 10% trisodium phosphate (TSP, from paint shop).

Diagnosis

Symptoms – but some plants have symptomless infections, e.g. vanilla orchid, Epidendrum. Submit samples to GrowHelp for electron microscopy ($130 per test):

https://www.daff.qld.gov.au/plants/health-pests-diseases/plant-pest-diagnostic-services/grow-help

Use Orchid ImmunoStrips (Agdia), but only test for Cymbidium mosaic virus and Odontoglossum ringspot virus ($201.50 for 25 tests = $8.05 per test). Purchase from TASAG ELISA Testing Services.
