JULY 30, 2017 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Reflection
Seventeenth Sunday/Ordinary Time
Pearls are unlike other precious materials: Metals
and gems are formed in the earth; pearls come
from a living creature. Also, pearls do not need to
be cut or polished — they’re beautiful just the
way they are.
The actual science of how they are formed is
profound: Pearls begin as an irritant inside the
heart of the oyster, which secretes layer upon
layer until the source is encased in lustrous
coatings. What a perfect Christian metaphor for
the redemptive value of suffering — that trials
leave one with treasure.
“The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in
search of fine pearls.”
IMPORTANT CHANGE NOTICE
Effective Monday, August 7, 2017, there will
be only ONE weekday Mass at 6:30 am
Monday thru Friday in the Chapel. This will
replace the two Masses said consecutively at
6:00 am and 7:00 am. Mahalo nui loa!

Let your voices be heard!
Please participate in a survey to help Pope
Francis and the bishops prepare for the
upcoming October 2018 Synod on Young
People, the Faith, and Vocational
Discernment.
A “Synod” is a gathering of Bishops through-
out the world, called by the Pope, to reflect
together on contemporary issues of faith and
life. Pope Francis is asking Catholic and non-
Catholic youth, young adults, parents, and
religious to participate. Responses will not
only help the universal Church, but also the
Diocese of Honolulu in evangelizing to the
next generation of youth and young
people.
To participate, visit www.catholichawaii.org/
synod2018 to fill out the survey and to read
the letter Pope Francis addressed to young
people. The survey closes on August 21,
2017.

JULY 30, 2017 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Living Catholic in the 808:
Baptism, Confirmation and then
First Communion
(By: [email protected])
The sacraments that initiate us into the Christian
life are Baptism and Confirmation. Baptism and
Confirmation go hand in hand, like a certificate
given its official seal.
In Baptism, Christians share in the death and
resurrection of Jesus. In Confirmation, the Holy
Spirit comes down upon us as it did on the
Apostles on the day of Pentecost. Baptism and
Confirmation are as inseparable as Easter and
Pentecost Sundays, the first and last days of the
Easter Season.
Jesus himself was baptized and then confirmed by
His Father with the gift of the Spirit: “After Jesus
was baptized, he came up from the water and,
behold, the heavens were opened for Him, and He
saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and
coming upon Him. And a voice came from the
heavens, saying, ‘This is my beloved Son, with
whom I am well pleased’”
(Mt 3:16-17).
In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the
sacraments are received in the proper theological
order, usually at the Easter Vigil — Baptism,
Confirmation and then first Holy Communion.
This takes place for anyone 7 years of age or
older. Soon, our children baptized as infants will
also be confirmed prior to First Communion.
Holy Father’s July, 2017
Intention
Lapsed Christians - That our
brothers and sisters who have
strayed from the faith,
through our prayer and witness to the Gospel,
may rediscover the merciful closeness of the
Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.

SHIPS, BOATS & THINGS THAT FLOAT
Developing Young Minds for 21 st Century Learning
STEM/STEAM is a multidiscipline-based learning incorporating the integration of other disciplinary
knowledge into a new whole, referred to as 21st Century learning. Although considered a new move-
ment in American Education to help teachers and students engage in a multidisciplinary approach to
learning that integrates academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(we also include Art), it is not new to Montessori Education. For over a hundred years, progressive
teaching and learning have been taking place in Montessori schools all over the world! This summer,
ELC students are “on board” to discover the world of ships, boats and things that float.
Montessori and STEM Educational Series #1:
Exploring Water Transportation
Students worked with recyclable materials to create and design their boats. They discovered
what recyclables made the best boat design for water travel, and “powered” their boat using
a simple “paddle mechanism.”

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: 1Kings 3:5, 7-12 - God gives Solomon a choice of
gifts. Solomon asks God for "an understanding mind," so that he could
always do what was just and best for his subjects. God rewards him with
the gift of wisdom making him the wisest man that ever lived.
SECOND READING: Romans 8:28-30 - The theme of this reading
concerns the graciousness and mercy of God at work in calling men to
himself, justifying them, and glorifying them as well. The point of the
reading is the eternal mystery of the ineffable love of God for man, even
before man existed.
GOSPEL: Matthew 13:44-52 - The lesson of these two parables is as
true for us today, as it was for those Palestinians to whom Christ spoke.
All Christians are called on to imitate the two wise men, and surrender
all their earthly possessions if necessary in order to gain eternal life. We
need to partake of this world's joys and pleasures within the framework
of God's commandments, but never lose sight of the goal—eternal life.
