APRIL 23, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (0R DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY)

A VIEW FROM THE PEW

Divine Mercy Sunday Celebrates Fullness of Christ’s Resurrection

The feast of Divine Mercy, or Divine Mercy Sunday, is observed on the octave of

Easter and celebrates the fullness of Christ's Resurrection. This feast is cele-

brated today, April 23rd.

The feast was initiated by St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who kept a

diary in the 1930s of Christ's private revelations, telling her of His message of

mercy. She wrote that she first saw a vision of Jesus on Feb. 22, 1931. He had

rays of mercy streaming from His heart. Christ told her to have an image painted

to represent the vision and to write below it, "Jesus, I trust in you!"

St. Faustina died of tuberculosis in 1938 at age 33. St. John Paul II canonized her in 2000 and

declared Divine Mercy Sunday a worldwide feast day. Two years later, he instituted a plenary

indulgence for those who participate in the devotion. St. John Paul II was canonized on the feast of

Divine Mercy in 2014.

To receive the graces of the plenary indulgence on Divine Mercy Sunday, along with the usual condi-

tions (sacramental confession, holy Communion, and prayers for the intentions of the pope), the faith-

ful, while in a state of grace and detached from venial sin, are asked to take part in the prayers and

devotions the Second Sunday of Easter held in honor of Divine Mercy in any church or chapel, or else

they should recite the Our Father and Creed before the Blessed Sacrament adding a devotional

prayer to the merciful Lord.

People also are encouraged to pray the novena of Divine Mercy, which begins Good Friday and ends

the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday; to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet; and to be merciful to-

ward others through words, actions and prayers. (To learn how to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet and

novena, visit www.thedivinemercy.org.

Divine Mercy Event At MSOS

On the Feast of Divine Mercy, Saints Helping With Adults and Youth Family

(S.H.W.A.Y.) Rosary Group will be hosting a Divine Mercy Event immediately after the 5:30

Sunday Mass on April 23rd. The event will include a sung chaplet of the Divine Mercy by

members of S.H.W.A.Y. followed by potluck fellowship and talk on Sts. Faustina and Pope

John Paul II and the promise of Divine Mercy.

S.H.W.A.Y. is a Family Rosary Movement of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

and approved association of the faithful that promotes a lifestyle of prayer and sacrifice to

families through song and reflections, having participants from various parishes. They meet

every Sunday night immediately after the 5:30 pm with traditional Catholic prayers,

fellowship and reflection on the lives of the Saints. This week's reflection focuses on the Polish nun, St.

Faustina, who received visions of Jesus. In her visions he instructed her to tell the world about his Divine

Mercy.

Feast of Mark, Evangelist

An Early and Enduring

Giant

St. Mark the evangelist was

one of the first 70 disciples.

He is believed to have written

the Gospel of Mark, our

earliest gospel. But he didn’t stop there.

He also founded the Church of Alexandria in

Egypt back in the year 42, a few years after

Jesus’ death. Alexandria became one of the great

centers of early Christianity. Today three

churches claim to be the direct heirs of the original

Church of Alexandria: Coptic Orthodox, Eastern

Orthodox, and Coptic Catholic. St. Mark looms

large behind them all, a giant of our tradition.

Take him as your inspiration as you write your

own “gospel” by living your faith in the world.

MSOS Students Wrapped up 3rd Quarter

As Mary, Star of the Sea students wrapped up their 3rd quarter, they gave their all as they

participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser which supports the American Heart

Association. The entire day was filled with events that helped the heart. From learning how to

perform chest compressions on actual “dummies” to a school-wide tug-o-war to jumping rope, it was

a fun way to learn about the heart and raise funds for a worthy cause at the same time.
