OCTOBER 09, 2016 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was passing
along between Samaria and Galilee. And as He
entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who
stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and
said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."
When He saw them He said to them, "Go and
show yourselves to the priests.”
(Luke 17:11-14)

A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Prayer Before an Election
From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that
confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our
community.
We ask for eyes that are free from blindness, so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters,
one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty.
We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women
oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.
We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to
your Kingdom.
We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and
keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to
your Kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit.
AMEN.

S A I N T OF T H E W E E K
Francis of Assisi
1182-1226, Feast Day—October 4
The son of a wealthy Italian merchant, Francis was a playboy who experienced
a profound conversion after going to war for Assisi, being imprisoned, and
enduring a debilitating illness. He renounced his family and riches, and lived a
life of radical poverty and service because he believed Christ had asked him to.
He founded the new mendicant Order of Friars Minor, or Franciscans, and
helped found the Poor Clares and Franciscan Third Order. Pope Pius XII said
Francis could be called “a second Christ” and in 2013 Argentine Cardinal
Jorge Mario Bergoglio took this medieval saint’s name when he was elected
Pope.
Francis is the patron of animals, environmentalists, merchants and Catholic
Action, and also a patron of Italy.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: 2Kings 5:14-17 -- This reading recounts
Naaman’s healing, and in the grip of gratitude, he embraces the God of
Israel as the one true God. Elisha’s refusal of gifts for his service shows
that he did only what God required and any reward will come from God
alone.
SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 2:8-13, - This reading begs the
question -- how can Christ “deny” us and “remain faithful” at the same
time? The text contrasts our infidelity to Christ with Christ’s fidelity to
himself and God, not to us. It’s not promising nothing bad will happen to
us, but that even God can’t pretend sin never happened; either we repent
or Christ must judge us.
GOSPEL: Luke 17:11-19 -- This healing story of ten lepers lies less
on the miracle and more on the virtue of the grateful Samaritan. The
nine settled for too little for had they returned, they too would have re-
ceived the far greater gift He gives the Samaritan, the promise of
salvation.
