NOVEMBER 12, 2017 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom
came and those who were ready went into the
wedding feast with him. Then the door was
locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and
said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he
said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know
you.’
Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the
day nor the hour (Matt 25:10-13).

A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Daughters of St. Paul Seek Financial Assistance for Building Maintenance
We are the Daughters of St. Paul from the Pauline Books & Media Center in downtown Honolulu and are in
our 43rd year serving the church through the media of evangelization bringing the word of God to many and
to your parish. We are self-supporting sisters not only in our mission but also in the maintenance of our build-
ing. Our book center, which is open to all people, is a center of light and inspiration.
Our AC system is breaking down and at this time we are in dire need to replace the Chiller system & compo-
nents, which is located on the roof just to get the cooling going. We have received the proposal for the work
and it will cost approximately $120,000.00. We are asking you for a donation to help us with this cost; any
support you give is tax deductible.
Please know that each and everyone of the sisters will be praying for you and your loved ones and we realize all
the good you do in your everyday lives. We pray God will bless you in all you do and in
whatever you can do to help us. Thank you in advance!
Please make donation to : Daughters of St. Paul, AC Fund, 1143 Bishop St., Honolulu, HI 96813, or

Reflection on Today’s Gospel
Matthew 25:1-13
Attention!
A consistent theme of these weeks leading to
Advent is akin to the motto of the U.S. Coast
Guard: Semper paratus: “Always ready.” For
what? The military remains ready for threats or
disasters like a tornado or flood, but Jesus’ call to
be ready always is neither a threat nor a predic-
tion of catastrophe. It is His expectation that we
be aware of the presence of the sacred as we move
through even the most ordinary day. Mary Oliver
suggests the same in her poem “The Summer
Day”: “I don’t know exactly what a prayer is. I do
know how to pay attention.” Being prepared for
the coming of Christ means keeping eyes and ears,
hearts and minds open. The sacred, the Christ, is
all around us.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development-CCHD Collection
Please respond to Pope Francis’ call for the 1st World Day of the Poor the weekend of November 19.
Please be generous in the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development-CCHD. In
the US, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the
causes of poverty and help vulnerable people across our country struggling to overcome persistent
poverty. In addition, 25 % of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local projects addressing
poverty. Two of the projects funded by CCHD in Hawaii involved parishioners working with the
Pu’a Foundation which focuses on families affected by incarceration with special emphasis on Native
Hawaiian women and girls, and Hope Services Hawaii which works to end family homelessness on
the Big Island by connecting persons to transitional and affordable housing, food, mentoring, and
job opportunities.
Please prayerfully consider contributing to the CCHD collection!

NOVEMBER 12, 2017 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
King of the Universe, formerly referred to as
"Christ the King," was established by Pope
Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a
way of life which leaves God out of man's
thinking and living and organizes his life as if
God did not exist. The feast is intended to
proclaim in a striking and effective manner
Christ's royalty over individuals, families, so-
ciety, governments, and nations.
Celebrating the Holy Eucharist on this day in
a very special way establishes the titles for
Christ's royalty over men: 1) Christ is God,
the Creator of the universe and hence wields a
supreme power over all things; "All things
were created by Him"; 2) Christ is our Re-
deemer, He purchased us by His precious
Blood, and made us His property and posses-
sion; 3) Christ is Head of the Church,
"holding in all things the primacy"; 4) God
bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world
as His special possession and dominion.
Please save the date and join us in our solemn
celebration!
An Invitation
You are all invited to a grand banquet hosted
by our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Uni-
verse! Come and fix your eyes on what it will
be like when you see Jesus sitting “upon His
glorious throne” with all the nations gathered
around Him (Matthew 25:31). Fix your gaze
on the new heavens and earth that Jesus will
establish.
After the celebration of the Holy Eucharist,
we will honor our King and Savior by way of
Adoration. Many MSOS ministries have al-
ready RSVP’ed to spend time with our Lord,
but there’s no need to RSVP, just come as
you are, and share in God’s “unconditional
love” for each and everyone of us.
“Jesus, we can’t wait to see you!”

"Make a Difference Day"
Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of helping others and making a difference in the
community and the world. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, Make a Difference Day
is sponsored by USA WEEKEND and its 800 carrier newspapers. Each year, the incoming ELC Par-
ent Teacher Guild (PTG) organizes a special school service project to involve parents in volunteer
service. In the past, parents have organized school projects that included recycling, aquaponic gar-
dening, and refurbishing the faculty lounge. This year the PTG and parent volunteers embarked on
an ambitious yard beautification project to plant grass in the common area outside the ELC play-
ground and the parking garage. With lack of a working sprinkler system and no grass, the weeds
took over and when it rained, the area became a muddy mess!

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Wisdom 6:12-16 - The first reading is taken from
the Book of Wisdom 6:12-16 and cites watchfulness as the key to a
faithful religion and understanding of wisdom.
SECOND READING: Thessalonians 4:13-18 - In Paul’s preaching,
he left them with the impression that the second coming of Christ was
imminent. Some died before the parousia and their concern is what has
happened to them. Paul states firmly and categorically that what matters
is that they interpret these events because of their faith and hope in the
Lord.
GOSPEL: Matthew 25:1-13 - In this parable, the general lesson is
clear enough. Our Lord described an incident that happened or could
have happened at a wedding festival in order to bring home to his
listeners the need for being ever vigilant and ready in his service if they
wish to avoid the calamity of being excluded from the heavenly and
eternal nuptials on the last day.
