DECEMBER 04, 2016 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
“As the journey of Advent continues, as we prepare to
celebrate the nativity of Christ, John the Baptist's call to
conversion sounds out in our communities. It is a pressing
invitation to open our hearts and to welcome the Son of God
Who comes among us to make divine judgment manifest.
“And it is today, in the present, that we decide our future
destiny. It is with our concrete everyday behavior in this life
that we determine our eternal fate. At the end of our days on
earth, at the moment of death, we will be evaluated on the
basis of our likeness or otherwise to the Baby Who is about to
be born in the poor grotto of Bethlehem, because He is the
measure God has given humanity.” — Benedict XVI
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel !!

DECEMBER 04, 2016 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
SYMBOLISM OF THE ADVENT WREATH
An Advent wreath's evergreen boughs form a circular shape, symbolizing
continuous life, with four candles to represent the four weeks of Advent.
Advent wreaths sometimes contain holly to remind Christians of the thorns in
Jesus' crown when he was crucified.
The four candles represent the 4,000 years between Adam and Eve and the
birth of Christ during which mankind waited for the arrival of Jesus. A candle on the wreath is lit
each Sunday during the season of Advent to signify the entrance of Christ, the light, into the world.
There are three purple candles and one rose-colored candle on an Advent wreath. The purple
candles are lit over the course of the first two and fourth Sundays of Advent. These candles represent
prayer, penance and preparation for the coming of the Lord that each person is expected to
undertake during the Advent season. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday,
and it represents joy. (Gaudete is latin for "rejoice.") Gaudete Sunday is seen as a day of rejoicing
because it marks the midpoint of Advent.
The candles are lit progressively throughout Advent to show the hope and expectation of the first
coming of Christ and the anticipation of the second coming where Jesus is to judge the living and the
dead.

The Mothers and Babies Ministry, together with the Angel Voices Choir and the MSOS Charismatic
Faith Group, invites everyone to an Advent “Baby Shower for Jesus” to assist needy mothers and
infants. Needed items include new baby blankets, quilts, clothing, diapers, etc.
If you are unable to attend the shower, but wish to donate a gift, you may place it in the “Manger for
Jesus” at the Church entrance. Items need not be gift wrapped. You may also bring items to the
Parish Office during the week.
Donations will be contributed to two Pro Life Centers: The Pearson Pregnancy Center and the Mary
Jane Home. It is here that women and teens receive free counseling during a crisis pregnancy, and
are encouraged to respect LIFE. If you prefer to make monetary donations, please make checks out
to “Mary, Star of the Sea Parish,” and include “Mothers & Babies” on the memo line.
If you would like to help with this PRO-LIFE Ministry, please call Yvonne Izumi at 396-3411.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Patronal Feast Day of the United States: Mary, Mother of America
Thursday, December 8, 2016
Join us at the 6:00 am, 7:00 am, 5:30 pm Masses (8:00 am School Mass).
It’s been one month since Election Day in the United States. Whether your candidate
won or lost, today is an opportunity to pray for our nation. In tumultuous times, it’s
comforting to know that we have an advocate in the Blessed Mother, Patroness of the
United States. Mary watches over each one of us and in a special way our country. As
we celebrate her Immaculate Conception, let us ask her intercession on behalf of our
nation — that we might have the courage and perseverance to follow her example of
fidelity to grace and obedience to God’s will.

MARY, STAR OF THE SEA SCHOOL
MSOS STUDENTS ADOPT SAINTS
& OFFER YOU THEIR ASSISTANCE
This year, to celebrate All Saints Day, each classroom at Mary, Star of the Sea school adopted
a saint to honor. After careful thought, each class picked a saint, learned about their special saint,
and then designed a banner to commemorate them, which they then carried proudly and reverently
in a procession to the church. During the prayer service, each class sent representatives to introduce
their saints to the school. We all learned about patron saints of animals, cancer, art, lost items, out-
casts, teachers, children, mothers, travel, conversion, writers and so much more. Now, on a daily ba-
sis, the saints are being honored in prayer and remembrance.
Our school would like to extend an invitation to you, our Parishioners. If you are in need of a
prayer from a special saint (or from our Lord or our dear Mother Mary), please send your requests
into the school at [email protected] and we’ll be sure to have a class remember your inten-
tions in a prayer.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Isaiah 11:1-10 -- Like last Sunday’s reading,
today’s prophecy speaks of a period when Judah turned to various for-
eign nations for protection from war and invasion. Although Isaiah con-
fronts Judah, he also expresses hope for the coming of a righteous king
who will fulfill his proper role in leading the people back to God.
SECOND READING: Romans 15:4-9 -- Today’s reading appears
near the end of Romans, after yet another encouragement to live in the
now as Christ did, giving one’s entire self for the good of the other.
GOSPEL: Matthew 3:1-12 -- In today’s reading, we can see that
Matthew relies on both Mark’s and his own perspective. They both
agree that John the Baptist appears as a sign that the Kingdom of
Heaven draws near. Matthew then adds to John’s challenge to various
Jewish leaders that they are not guaranteed a place in Heaven because
they are descendants of Abraham; they must live as such to demonstrate
genuine repentance.
