Introduction by the Chairman,Liveries Committee, City of London
I am very pleased to introduce this new edition of the Masters’ Picture Book showingthe names and photographs of the livery company masters, prime wardens, and upperbailiff.
I am grateful to Piers Nicholson, past master Tyler and Bricklayer, whose initiative andhard work this has been. And also to Mark Grove and The Cook and the Butler whosesponsorship has paid for the website and the printing.
This publication is updated at the website http://www.liverycompanies.com at the beginningof each month, and complements the Fishmongers’ site at http://www.fishhall.co.uk
Another site which will be of interest is the Livery Committee website, where you canfind details and links to a host of livery related information at http://www.liverycompanies.info. This is designed to be a gateway to many sources of interestand facts for masters, liverymen and their clerks, and of course includes links to the twosites just mentioned.
In particular I would draw your attention to the Diary, and Briefings & Courses menutabs. At the latter are details of the City Briefings held at Guildhall in the early eveningfour times a year. These are designed to be relevant to all involved in liverycompanies, from the newest joined freeman, to court assistants, wardens, and indeedmasters and their clerks; their spouses and partners are also welcome. Please may Iask masters and clerks to nominate or encourage your liverymen to attend one of thesebriefings as part of their induction into your company or court.
The role of the Livery Committee includes acting as the conduit for communicationbetween the livery (and its masters, prime wardens, courts, liverymen and clerks) andthe “powers that be” at Guildhall (including the Chamberlain’s Court), Mansion House, and the Old Bailey, on any matter affecting the interests of the general body of theLivery (to quote from our terms of reference drafted in 1942). The committee is alsonow a means of improving communications between the Corporation and the Livery, increasing the involvement of Liverymen in City affairs, and acting as a forum for discussion.Should you wish to make a contribution to such discussion or communication, pleasefeel free to contact me at [email protected]
