Use place value charts to understand that a digit in one
place represents ten times what it represents in the place
to its right:
Practice representing numbers in different ways:
Use place value charts to compare numbers by place
value (how many 1’s, how many 10’s, how many 100’s…).
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value
and division.
Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit
in one place represents ten times what it represents in
the place to its right.
Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-
ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
Compare two multi-digit numbers based on
meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and
< symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Use place value understanding to round multi-digit
whole numbers to any place.

Throughout the school year, fourth-grade students will spend the most time working on the
following topics. They should understand them well by the end of the school year.

Last year, Big Bill’s Department Store sold many pairs of
footwear. 118,214 pairs of boots were sold, 37,092 more
pairs of sandals than pairs of boots were sold, and
124,417 more pairs of sneakers than pairs of boots were
sold. How many pairs of footwear were sold last year?
Four classes are going on a field trip. The classes each
have 28 students. Buses hold 48 passengers. If all of the
students, 4 teachers, and 4 chaperones are going on the
field trip, how many buses will they need?”
Sample Word Problems:
Practice adding and subtracting (multi-digit numbers)
and multiplying and dividing, two digits by two digits (32 ×
68; 89 ÷ 47) and up to four digits by one digit (1,200 × 8;
1,800 ÷ 9).
Read books about division and talk about situations
where students use division in real life: https://www.the-
best-childrens-books.org/teaching-division.html
Practice different strategies for dividing, including an
area model, a number bond and the algorithm or

Multiplying and Dividing
Tips for HomeTopic___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Use the four operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division) to solve multi-step word
problems that use whole numbers and have whole
number answers, including problems where students
make sense of remainders.

Practice adding and subtracting fractions with the same
denominator (4/10 + 3/10; 56/100 − 22/100).
Use visual representation when multiplying fractions.
Encourage a positive mindset about mathematics in the
real world. This can be done by cooking with your child
and asking them to help you measure the ingredients for
a recipe.
“You are going to make cookies for a party. You
need 2/3 cup sugar for one batch and decide to
make 8 batches, so all your neighbors can have a
cookie. How many cups of sugar do you need?
Understand and apply equivalent fractions (recognizing
that ¼ is less than 3/8 because ¼ equals 2/8, and two-
eighths are less than three-eighths).
Add, subtract, and multiply fractions in simple problems
(2 3⁄4 − 1 1⁄4 or 3 × 5⁄8).
Solve related word problems that include fractions in
context.
Rewriting 0.62 as 62⁄100
Understand and explain simple decimals in terms of fractions.
Compare decimals using a variety of strategies (i.e. place
value chart, metric measurement, area models, number lines).
Add with decimals by turning into fractions:
Express money in decimals and solve word problems involving
money.
Use dimes and pennies to talk about fractions
and decimals of a dollar (i.e. 33 pennies is 0.33
or 33/100 of a dollar)
Sample word problems:
Barrel A contains 2.7 liters of water. Barrel B
contains 3.09 liters of water. Together, how
much water do the two barrels contain?

What kinds of number problems are children learning to solve this year?
Ask for specific updates on how your child is progressing in their understanding of the
key content of the grade.
How does my child approach complex math tasks? What are some suggestions for
me to encourage them in learning challenging content?
What should my child be able to understand and talk about as a result of what they
have learned?
Is my child able to demonstrate to you that they understand what they are learning
about? If not, what challenges are they facing?
How can I support a positive approach to learning math?
TIPS FOR COLLABORATING WITH TEACHERS
Here are some questions you can ask to learn more about your child's academic progress:
Recognize and draw lines of symmetry
Analyze and classify triangles by side length and
angles or both.
isosceles, scalene or equilateral triangle
Classify quadrilaterals as parallelograms, trapezoids,
rectangles, squares.
Identify, define, and draw points, line segments, rays,
angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
Use right angles to determine whether angles are equal
to, greater than, or less than right angles. Draw right,
obtuse, and acute angles.
Measure and draw angles. Sketch given angle
measures and verify with a protractor.
Problem-solve with the addition of angle measures (see
sample in tips).
Understand two-dimensional figures and symmetry:

redondear números enteros de varios dígitos a
cualquier lugar.
A lo largo del año escolar, los estudiantes de cuarto grado pasarán la mayor parte del tiempo
trabajando en los siguientes temas. Deben comprenderlos bien al final del año escolar.
