We were able to quickly deduce who our speakers for the day were, just by looking at their uniforms. Officer Kevin Ka-dooka and Officer Hirano (we did not get the first name-much apologies) of the Honolulu Police De-partment came to speak to us about current events surrounding active shooters. One of the more recent events was the shootings in San Berna-dino. The officers talked about how places need to have plan of escape should there ever be a need. You should also have a meeting place so you can take count of everyone to make sure no one was left behind. When calling 911, it is very important that you are clear and concise when giving information. You are the most im-portant link for them to be able to respond quickly and effectively. They talked about various events, such as the shootings at Colum-bine High School. The State of Hawaii DOE has plans in place to lock-down the school and classrooms to keep as
many students and staff as safe as possible. They shared a vid-eo with us that hits close to home. Many of us are familiar with the Xerox shootings that happened a few years ago. We never thought that our little State would ever ex-perience something like that, but we did and HPD has some tips should you ever be in that situation: • If you can make it out-
side, try to keep your hands up so first re-sponders know you are escaping
• If escape is not possi-ble, try to find a room to hide in and barri-cade the door with whatever you can find.
The officers men-tioned that one of the most difficult places to lockdown are hospitals. With so many people confined to beds, it is very difficult to evacuate the building. HPD is constantly training and revising their plans to ensure they have the best plans to implement should a situa-tion ever occur. We realize that it is not an easy or glamorous job and we appreciate what our men and wom-en in blue try to accom-plish every day. A big mahalo nui loa to Russ Boyer and Officers Kadooka and Hirano for such a great talk.

This was a great meeting as we
started a little earlier than usual. We are
proud to bring on our very first corporate
sponsorship members!
Bernie Ching spearheaded the ef-
fort to bring in folks from the Waipahu
YMCA. Charles Dias, Betty Sequin,
Deborah Theirbach, and Jennifer Towns-
hend are now full fledged members on
the West Pearl Harbor Rotary Club.
Each new member was pinned by a cur-
rent member of the club and we are glad
to have them aboard.
With much to catch up one, we
want to recap the last two meetings we
had. First up was the Membership Semi-

Then, on Feb 3rd, we had a special
visit with Goro Arakawa. It was a very
special day shared by those of us that
could make it, along with Goro and his
son, David.
This meeting started with Prez Lin-
da calling upon Tommy Gee to lead in the
Pledge, Joe Sholtis to give the Invoca-
tion.
For visiting Rotarians, we saw Mike
Doss from Honolulu Sunset. He brought
along Mike Chinaka from the YMCA in
Honolulu. Great to have them both.
