For Design Professionals, multidimensional success is both a passion and a necessity. In addition to balancing diverse
objectives and perspectives from multiple stakeholders, Design professionals play an essential role in shaping a
sustainable built environment.
This course will use a variety of examples to illustrate the range of project types that are being successfully created with timber, and how material choice can help achieve
‘triple bottom line’ success considering People, Planet and Profit.
1. Develop an understanding of the ‘triple bottom line’ of design success: social, environmental and business.
2. Evaluate the approaches and design strategies used to address long term performance of wood systems including fire protection, durability, serviceability and constructability
3. Explore small and large innovations in wood building design and how they can help achieve code conformance.
4. Analyze the impacts of code construction type selection and balance points between design flexibility, construction costs, contractor scheduling and code analysis.
• Mixed Use • Infill and Urban • Encourages
transportation choice - car, bus, walk, bicycle
• High in Resource Efficiency: low energy and land use, support existing infrastructure
• Quality Design that creates a sense of place

Fire – Biggest exposure is during construction – A sprinkler system that is progressively
installed and activated during the course of construction can help mitigate this exposure.
– Both Passive and Active protection have become typical
40
Durability Protect wood from water
• Easiest approach: keep it under roof • Curbs at walls to keep wood separated • Flashing at joints and edges to keep it dry • Saddle flashing or use ‘knife plates’ to avoid continuous
members from inside to outside
Make it easy to monitor conditions One of the advantages of leaving major members visible
Water can come from plumbing too
Emerging: Heat Treatment; Borate treatment such as Timbor… and other innovations
41
Shrinkage Finding Weak Links in the Chain
– Impact: protect key structural elements • Parking area columns • Shear walls – protect with wheel stops
Height and Area
– Areas of 100,000 sq ft and more are typically not a problem even without fire walls.
– To 60 feet and four stories typically with Type V, to 85 Feet and five stories with Type 3 and 4 are routine.

WHITE HOUSE RURAL COUNCIL
Invitation to address government and industry leaders from around the US at the White House Rural Council’s Symposium on Wood in Green Building in March of 2014..
The presentation highlighted the important role of architects in shaping a beautiful and efficient environment, and their expertise in material selection!
This concludes The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems Course
