Nanotechnology in Drug
Development

Introduction
Nanotechnology can be define in a variety
of ways, but the one common component is
technology that deals with materials smaller than
100 nanometers.
One definition states that nanotechnology
is the art and science of manupulating matter at
the nanoscale to create new and unique materials
and products. How small is nanometer? Really,
really small too small to see even with light
microscope.
Nanotechnology
• Nanotechnology breakthrough research in
Pharmaceutical & Biopharmaceutical Industry.
• Nanotechnology, is a field of science and
technology. The aim of nanotechnology is to
control matter at the atomic and molecular
level.

Use of NanotechnologyNanotechnology has produced a variety
of nonmaterial's, including nano composites
use in building materials, naocrystals used in
solar panels at semiconductors. Nanoparticals
are used in stain-repellent clothing and
sunscreens, nanocatalysis in drug
development.
Nanotechnology will provide the next
new wave of products, with promises of food
that can adjust its colour, flavour and nutrient
content.
Drug Discovery and Development
• Validate specific targets
• Discover the right molecule (potential drug) to
interact with the target chosen
• Test the new compound in the lab and clinic for
safety and efficacy and
• Gain approval and get the new drug into the hand of
doctors and patients.5
Drug Discovery and Development
• Success requires immense resources
The best scientist minds, highly sophisticated
technology and complex project management.
It is also takes persistence and sometimes luck.
Ultimately the process of drug discovery brings hope
and relief to millions of patients

Drug Development and Delivery
• The multi-disciplinary field of nanotechnology
is making small device, closer and closer to
reality.
• Manipulate and organize matter on the nano-
scale.
7
Drug Development and Delivery
• Drug filled nano-capsules, release their
biological compounds on contact with cancers
only.
• Nanotechnology will be applied at all stages of
drug development, from formulations for
optimal delivery to diagnostic applications in
clinical trials.

Carbon Nanotube
Carbon nanotubes are adept at entering the nuclei of cells and may one day be used to deliver drugs and vaccines.
The modified nanotubes have so far only been used to ferry a small peptide into the nuclei of fibroblast cells.
Polymeric Nanoparticles
In recent years, biodegradable
polymeric nanoparticles have
attracted considerable attention as
potential drug delivery devices in
view of their applications in drug
targeting to particular organs/tissues,
as carriers of DNA in gene therapy,
and in their ability to deliver
proteins, peptides and genes.
Research Priorities
SOME SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS OF NANODEVICES
Development of one dose a day ciprofloxacin using nanotechnology
Tumor targeted taxol delivery using nanoparticles in Phase 2 clinical trial stage
Improved ophthalmic delivery formulation using smart hydrogel nanoparticles
Oral insulin formulation using nanoparticles carriers.
Liposomal based Amphotericin B formulation
Drug Delivery Technology Important to Pharma Industry
Drug delivery formulations involve low costresearch compared that for discovery of new molecule,
Minimizing the drug use would significantly reducethe effective cost of drug which would give financialrelief to the patients.
ConclusionThe use of nanotechnology in medicine in
general and drug delivery in particular is spreading rapidly. For quite some time past nanoparticles are being use in pharmaceutical industry to reduce toxicity and side effects of drugs. However it is also realized now that these drug carriers systems may appears to be risky to patient. Therefore further research is necessary. More over in feature collaborative programs are to launched as nanotechnology study is very costly which requires very qualified and trained scientist and modern instruments.
