The assessment tool for Broadcast Video Production Pathway Completers is theTelevision Video Production component of the SkillsUSA Work Force Ready System.

GPS vs. National Assessment• While many concepts covered in the Workforce

Readiness assessment cannot be found directly in our Georgia Performance Standards, most of the concepts can be derived from them.

• By using the assessment as a learning opportunity for ourselves and our students we are able to enhance a standard by fostering a higher level of knowledge surrounding each GPS.

GPS vs. National AssessmentMany national assessment questions deal with photography (not videography) concepts.

Teaching students more in depth concepts creates opportunities for those students to not only meet, but exceed a GPS such as: ACCT-BVP2-2. Students will exhibit proper use of field equipment and its functions.

By learning how and why the camera works students are better able to produce more creative and technically advanced projects.

Interlaced Scanning

Each frame of video consists of two fields – the even and odd. Two fields are put together to create a complete frame of video.

Progressive Scanning

Instead of splitting each frame into two fields, progressive scanning scans the entire image one line at a time.

This makes for a “smoother” picture, but requires more bandwidth.

Now, with better technology, many people use the Auto White Balance setting on their camera and never notice a problem.

Difficult lighting situations can cause Auto White Balance to produce “shifting” – that’s why you should always custom white balance.

The millimeter measurement refers to the focal length of the lens.

The smaller the measure, the closer the lens elements can be to one another, resulting in a wide angle shot with a large depth of field.

Keep in mind that wide angle lenses can also be utilized to capture shots with a tight depth of field. The ability to place the camera close to the subject helps create a tight depth of field. Using the infinity focus setting, however, results in a large depth of field.

Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second. “Slower” shutter speeds result in blurring. Using shutter speeds effectively and/or creatively greatly enhances photographs and video.

Fast shutter speeds are effective for shooting fast moving objects and capturing the moment.

The larger the value, the slower the shutter speed which allows for shooting with little to no light – but creates motion blurring.
