Network: A network is a collection of computers and
devices interconnected by communicationschannels that facilitate communications amongusers and allow users to share resources.
Networking: networking is the construction, design, and use of a network, including the physical(cabling, hub, bridge, switch, router, and so forth),the selection and use of telecommunication protocoland computer software for using and managing thenetwork, and the establishment of operation policiesand procedures related to the network.

TY PES OF NETWORK BASED ON
PH Y SICAL SCOPE
LAN (Local Area Network) is a group of computers and other devices (such as
printers) that are connected together by a commonmedium, generally copper wire but can also be wireless.
As a general rule, a LA N will cover a total distance noless than one-half mile with the distance between any two devices being no more than 60 feet.
The current transmission speed of data along a LA Ngenerally runs from 10Mbps to 100Mps (i.e. 1Gbps) isbecoming popular.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)
more commonly known as Wi-Fi (short for wirelessfidelity) is exactly the same as LA N but different inregards to medium for it does not require wired cable
connections. Many airports, hotels, and fast-food facilities offer public
access to Wi-Fi networks. These locations are known ashot spots. An interconnected area of hot spots andnetwork access points is known as a hot zone.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
A MAN is one that has a physical distance limit of roughly 30 miles.
MA N uses the topologies described for LA N. MA N doesnot use public telephone system to transfer data just likeLA N. Transfer rate are usually at 100Mps to 1Gbps.
WAN (Wide Area Network) on the other hand is used to connect computers and
other devices when the distance exceeds constraints of LA Ns and MA Ns. This network uses the public
telephone system, but since the revolution of theInternet the use of WA N has slowly declined.

INTERNET
The Internet is a global system of interconnectedgovernmental, academic, corporate, public, and privatecomputer networks.
The Internet is also the communications backboneunderlying the World Wide Web (WWW).

INTRANET organizations can limit access to their
networks to other members of their organization by using an intranet. Intranet uses the same networkprotocols as the Internet but limits accessibility tocomputer resources to a select group of persons in theorganizations
The 5 best-designed intranets for 2011 are:
y AMP Limited (Australia), a wealth management company
y Bennett Jones LLP (Canada), one of Canada's largest law firms
y Bouygues Telecom (France), a telecom, mobile, fixed, TV, andInternetcommunications services company
y Credit Suisse AG (Switzerland), a global financial servicescompany
y Duke Energy (US), an electrical power holding company

EX TRANET when an intranet is expanded to
include users beyond the business firm it iscalled extranet.y Today, the Big 3 automakers, Chrysler Corp., General
Motors Corp., and Ford Motor Co. are building a
collaborative extranet that links them to theirsuppliers through designated ISPs via a managed, virtual private network (VPN) called the AutomotiveNetwork eXchange (A N X).
