New topic: Mind the gap
New Unit: Mind the gap
We are moving onto a new unit called ‘mind the gap’.
This topic incorporates some key questions about
development:
L1-What is development?
L2-How is development measured?
L3-How does development vary around the world?
L4/5- Case study linked with development
Instructions
This box is for you to read the information
inside of it.
A task for you to complete
The task might vary from your opinion, a
comprehension task, analysing maps etc.
Research opportunity
This is where you there will be a youtube
clip or link to allow you to research further
Exam question.
The exam question(s) might be a ready made
model for you to mark, some for you to
complete
What is development?
In today’s lesson you should be able to define development and understand how we classify
countries in the world.
Starter: What do you already know about development?(I want you to write down five ideas about development, at this point there is not right or wrong answer)
Your ideal worldRead the piece of text below,
obviously do not close your eyes!
Your local world:
What problems do people face in Rochdale?
What problems do people face in the United Kingdom?
Around the world:
What problems do people face in the world?
Are the problems the same around the world? What examples could
you give? Try to name some cities or countries.
Development
Your task is to find or draw four different images related to development.Once you have got the four images, I want you
write why it is related to development.
EXAMPLE
This images shows shipping
containers. This related to
development because it shows
how some countries import and
exports goods.
Hint: Think about people,
the economy and
environment.
How can we define development?
Task: I want you to read the definition of development below, then I want you to underline or highlight the
keywords.
Development is the progress of a country in terms of its economic growth, use of technology and quality of life. It
can be measured in various ways.
Answer the following questions: Remember, try to break the words down.
1. What is meant by economic growth?
1. What is meant by the use of technology?
1. What is meant by quality of life?
How did we classify countries?
In the 1980’s, an imaginary line was drawn around the world to show the growing income inequality between countries,
known as the Brandt line. This created the ‘Rich North’ and ‘Poor South’.
Here I want you say whether you agree or disagree with the
brandt line on this page. Include why you might
agree/disagree? what could be wrong with this? What could be
good with this? Try to include examples of countries.
To what extent do you agree with the brandt line?
How do we classify countries now?
We classify countries in terms of social and economic indicators.
people Money How well/not well the country
is doing.
How do we classify countries now?
Here, I want you to match the keywords with their definitions. These keywords are very common in geography and without a
doubt will be repeated in years to come.
Key word Definition
1.Birth rate The average lifespan of someone born in that country
2.Life expectancy An average of the national gross domestic products per person.
3.Quality of life Measures health, comfort, well-being and happiness.
4.GDP per capita An average of the gross national income (the value of products, taxes and income from
abroad) per person.
5.GNI per capita Number of live births per 1000 people per year
Gross means total profit or income
How do we classify countries now?
Recently we classify a country based on their development in more specific detail. The International Monetary
Fund (IMF) uses the names:
Low Income Developing
Countries (LIDCs) - these are
countries with a GNI per capita of
$1,045 or less, eg Chad and
Ethiopia.
Emerging and Developing Countries
(EDCs) - these are countries with a GNI
per capita of more than $1,045 but less
than $12,746, eg Mexico and Iraq.
Advanced Countries (ACs) - these
are countries with a GNI per capita
above $12,746, eg Germany and the
USA.
Using the information from this lesson, you are going to do the following:
There is going to be extra information based on three countries and you need to decide whether it is an
LIDC, EDC and AC.
Fill out the following table on the next page to do this.

Predicted country AC, EDC or
LIDC?
