TRACKANDFIELDOurTrackandFielddayissetforTuesday,May2.WeneedallCyclonestodoasundancesowe’llhavegoodweatheronthatdayJ.OurphilosophyisthatallstudentsinGrades3–7whowishtoparticipatewillparticipate.Wecanonlyputfourstudentspereventandstudentsareonlyallowedtobeinfourevents(fiveonrareoccasions).Toparticipate,studentsmustshowgoodsportsmanshipandco-operation.Ontrackday,wewillrequireparentdriversandparentvolunteersforsupervision,especiallyofourGrade3swhowillbeattendingforthefirsttime.Anoticehasgonehometodayforpermissionandvolunteers.Pleasereturnthis toschoolnolaterthanApril25sowehavetimetoco-ordinatestudentsanddrivers. Ontrackday,studentsshoulddressinlayers(itcanbeverywindyandchillyatthetrack)andneedtobringawaterbottle,healthylunchandsnacksandsunscreen.Studentsshouldcometoschoolpreparedtogotothemeeteveniftheweatherlooksiffy.CHANGETOREGISTRATIONREGULATIONS

Duetosubstantialchangescausedbythecourtcasevictory,manyschoolswillbeatcapacityandbeyondforSeptemberasclasssizesarereduced.Forthisreason,registrationswillbeacceptedtoneighbourhoodschoolsonafirstcome,firstservebasis.Studentswillnolongerbeguaranteedaplaceintheirneighbourhoodschooliftheyregisterbeforeacertaindate.Ifyouknowofanyonewhoneedstoregistera

kindergartener,orwhowillbemovinginthenextcoupleofmonths,pleaseadvisethemtoregisterassoonastheypossiblecan.

NEW!REVERSELUNCHATQUILCHENAStartinginMay,Quilchenaisgoingtodoatwo-monthtrialofthe“reverselunch”.ThereareanumberofotherElementarySchoolsinRichmondwhoarecurrentlydoingthisandtheyonlyhavepositivethingstosayaboutit.WhenIwasatBrighouseweswitchedtothereverselunchandfoundtheeffectstobeverypositive.WhatisReverseLunch?Traditionally,studentshaveeatentheirlunchfrom12:00to12:15,thenhavegoneoutsidefortheremainingtimeuntilthe12:47bell.Areverselunchreversesthatarrangement;insteadofeatingat12:00,thestudentsgooutsideat12:00,andcomebackinat12:30toeattheirlunches.PLAYFIRST;EATSECOND.Whywouldwedothis?Researchandexperienceshowsthat:•therearestudentswhodon’teattheirlunchesbecausetheywanttorushoutsideandplaywiththeirfriends•studentshaveabetterappetiteafterfreshairandexerciseandaremorelikelytoeatalltheirlunches •transitionat1:00pmfromlunchtoacademicsissmoother•thereislesslitteroutsidebecausestudentsnolongertakefoodoutsidethattheydonotfinish•therearefewerbehaviouralissuesduringeatingtimeasstudentsarehungryandhavealreadyhadachancetoplay;theyaremoresettledandarefocusedoneating Whenwillwedothis?WewillstartthistrialonTuesday,May2,andassesstheprogram’ssuccessattheendoftheyear.Otherconsiderations:•Pleasemakesurethatstudentshaveasubstantialrecesssnackastheywillbeeatinghalfanhourlaterthantheyareusedto.•Pleasegivethereverselunchachance.Studentswillundoubtedlycomplainaboutbeinghungryatfirstbuttheywilladjusttothenewschedule.•Wherepossible,teacherswillallowstudentstofinishtheirlastcoupleofbitesduringsilentreadingsostudentsarenotsorushedtofinishtheirlunchesCOMBINEDCLASSES

InmostschoolsinRichmond,combinedclasses(classeswithtwoormoregrades)arethenorm.Aswewillhavemost,ifnotall,ofourstudentsincombinedclassesnextyear,Iwantedtoexplainwhy.Whydowecombineclasses?•onapracticallevel,werarelyhaveexactlytherightnumberofstudentsforallstraightgrades•combinedclassesgiveusgreaterflexibilityforclassplacements.Forexample:astraightGr.2
