From Father Mike
In today’s second reading from the letter to the Hebrews, we hear a mention of
Melchizedek, who served as both a king and priest. As king he ruled over
Jerusalem and was the one who blessed Abraham after his victory over armies in
that region who had tried to plunder and kidnap those from his tribe. Abraham
gives to Melchizedek a tenth of the recaptured spoils for him to offer to God for
him to use in his priestly role. Melchizedek is an important reference because he
blesses Abraham in the name of the God Most High, which is the first
acknowledgement that the God of the Hebrews was not just one among many
gods but the one and only God. This recognition of the universality of God in the
time of Abraham carries forward as Hebrews sees Jesus as part of this “order of
Melchizedek,” meaning that he was both the priest and sacrificial offering that is
relevant to all of humanity, a universal Savior. Furthermore, because of his
experience of human suffering, he is the cause of salvation for all. In this time of
fractured politics and peoples divided by ideology, especially as we approach
another election, let us continue to turn to Christ with prayers that our universal
priest and king will draw us together from different races, classes, and nations,
especially to address the human suffering among us.
