A new U. S. Coast Guard ReserveTraining unit was commissioned recentlyat brief ceremonies at the Dickson GunPlant in Houston. Tile new unit will pro-vide reserve training in the field of mer-
chant marine safety, a major finlctionof the regular U. S. Coast Guard.
This is the third Coast Guard Reserveunit in tile Houston area but the firstassigned to marine safety. The other twotraining groups are assigned to portsecurity and vessel augmentation pro-
grams. A total of approximately 20 offi-cers and 200 men train in the three
groups.
The U. S. Coast Guard is charged withthe enforcement of laws established topromote the safe operation of our mer-chant fleet. This work includes every-thing from approval of original plansbefore ship construction begins to peri-odic safety inspections of all merchant
and passenger ships, including the licens-
ing of operating personnel.
The new unit will utilize the. experi-ence and skills of senior Reserve officers.
The first Commanding Officer of the newunit is Commander Stanley Walter.USCGR.
