PASHTO IANGUAGBPashto is the Language of the Afghans' and historicaly
it belongs' to the Indo - European group of languages'
In academic writing Pashton and Afghan are ffeated as
synonyms and have no difference'
Afghans or Pashtons themselves call their language Pashto
and the people of the world know them and their
language accordinglY.
The term Pathan known since the seventeenth century
is an Indo -Anglicised version of the ethnonym Pashton'
which is still used in the Indian subcontinent'
For further development of Pashto, on September
l4,Igl4 "Saraj-ul akhbare" an official Afghan news paper
stated:
" Now it becomes necessary to address ourselves on the
importance of our national language Pashto' We should
understand that every nation has a national language
which gives it its life. A nation which loses its language
also loses its life. The protection of the basic language of
every country is as important as the protection of its life'
Vy'e are called the Afghan nation and our beloved
homeland is called Afghanistan ' We possess specific
customs, ethics and a national language which We call
Pashto. we must protect this langùage and attempt to
develop and imProve it..."

Pashto and Dari are both official languages of
Afghanistan. Afghanistan has a population of about 18
million of which nearly 60Vo are Pashto speaking'
According to the constitution the Afghan nation is
composed of all those individuals who possess the
citizenship of the state of Afghanistan in accordance
with the piovisions of the law.
Before the law all Afghans have equal rights and
obligations.
