INTRODUCTION
Located 10 kilometers away from Ipoh city, Bercham New Village is one of
the most advanced new villages in Perak, with a total population of 2623 villagers. It
is located next to the PLUS highway exit and this helps to draw a lot of people to
move into the area. Developments in the housing estate sector in the 1990s drew
people from outside to move in to the area and consequently, the population increased
dramatically. Most of the villagers here are elderly as the younger generation went
out to work in the city.

It was not until 1951 that Bercham New Village existed when the British
government tried to battle against the communists by establishing new villages in
order to control the villagers. It was easier for the government to manage the villagers
by settling them in one village since it would be difficult to manage the villagers if
the houses were scattered. There are 19 alleyways in this gated area with 646 houses
and 36 shops; the territory of the new village is within the 19 alleyways. The village
was denied night activity outside the new village area as the authority feared that the
villagers could be threatened by the communists nearby. Agriculture and poultry
farming were the main economic activities by the villagers when tin mining was
discontinued.

BASIC FACILITIES
Bercham New Village is equipped with complete basic facilities such as bus
stops, a police station, a community hall and a wet market. Due to the limited land
area, the new village does not have a proper post office. The only post office to serve
the whole area is located at the housing area inside a shop lot. There is only one
government clinic available; in emergency cases, the villagers have to go to the
hospital in Ipoh city. There is also a sports complex where villagers could spend their
time for sports activities like basketball and jogging. Buses to Ipoh city pass by the
area very frequently and it is very convenient for the villagers to travel to the city.
