Game 24 | Home Game 11 (6-4) | Night Game 16 (6-9)
TV: SportsNet LA, SNLA Spanish | Radio: AM 570 (Eng.); 1020 AM (Span.)
START A STREAK: The Dodgers tonight begin a six-game
homestand with the first of three contests against the red-hot
Philadelphia Phillies, winners of six consecutive games. Los
Angeles ran its record in extra-innings to 1-1 yesterday with a 10-
inning victory over the Giants that completed a seven-game road
trip (3-4). Following the weekend series with the Phillies, the
Giants come to Dodger Stadium for three games from May 1-3.
The Dodgers stand at 11-12 in the season’s opening
month with this series against Philadelphia closing out
the April slate. Los Angeles is looking to avoid a losing
record in April for the second consecutive season as last
year’s NL West champs were 12-13. Prior to last season,
the last Dodger squad to post a losing March-April
record was the 2010 team (9-14).
The Dodgers begin their season series with the Phillies
tonight having won nine of 13 games over the past two
seasons against the Fightins. Last year, Los Angeles took
the season series, 4-2 (2-1 at Dodger Stadium).
FLIP THE SWITCH: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda will
take the mound for his fifth start of the season tonight, looking to
shake off a slump in which he has allowed four or more earned
runs without reaching the sixth inning in three straight starts.
Maeda won both his starts against the Phillies last year, giving up
five runs in 11.0 innings (4.09 ERA) while striking out 13.
AIN’T IT GRANDAL?: Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal has
scorched the Phillies since his career began in 2012:
Active Players, Highest Career OPS vs. Phillies (minimum 75 PA; current team listed)
Yasmani Grandal, LAD 1.172 (.442 OBP + .730 SLG)
Ryan Braun, Mil 1.097
Edwin Encarnacion, Cle 1.082
Yoenis Cespedes, NYM 1.077 SOURCE: STATS, LLC
In 18 games, Grandal is hitting .333 (21-for-63) with
seven homers, 14 RBI, four doubles and 16 runs scored
in his career against Philadelphia.
A BAKER’S DOZEN AND COUNTING: Dodger third
baseman Justin Turner extended his hitting streak to a career-
high 13 games in yesterday’s contest, going 1-for-4 with an RBI
single. During the streak, Turner is hitting .373 (19-for-51) with
five runs, four doubles, five RBI and four hit by pitches, along
with a .458 OBP and a .451 SLG during the run, which started on
April 13. Overall, Turner leads the National League in doubles
(9, 2nd MLB), while ranking in the NL’s top 10 in batting average
(.363, 6th), on-base percentage (.433, 7th), multi-hit games (9, T-
6th) and hit by pitches (5, T-2nd) in 21 games to start the season.
Turner’s 13-game hitting streak is currently the longest
active streak in the Majors and is tied with Mitch
Haniger’s run (SEA) from April 6-19 for the longest in
baseball this season.
LONG TIME COMING: The Dodgers are preparing for a very
special Wednesday night to honor Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin
Scully as the legendary announcer will become just the 11th
inductee into the Dodgers’ Ring of Honor. Fans should arrive
early for a special pregame ceremony, and the first 40,000
ticketed fans in attendance will receive a Vin Scully
Commemorative Microphone Statue presented by Mercedes-
Benz Dealers of Southern California. In addition, the Dodgers
will offer a limited number of Reserve Level tickets for $22
available at Dodgers.com/promotions and at the box office.
THE GRADUATE: Dodger shortstop Corey Seager is showing
no signs of a sophomore slump, belting his team-leading fifth
home run of the year yesterday afternoon in San Francisco. Seager
went 1-for-3 in the game and has posted a .318 (27-for-
85)/.398/.565 slashline with 14 runs, six doubles and 17 RBI (14th,
NL) in 23 games this year. The National League’s unanimous
Rookie of the Year award winner had a breakout season last year
finishing 2016 ranked among the NL leaders in hits (193, 2nd),
runs (105, 5th), doubles (40, 7th), multi-hit games (57, T-2nd),
extra-base hits (71, 7th), batting average (.308, 7th) and slugging
percentage (.512, 10th). Seager also earned an All-Star selection
and a Silver Slugger Award, while also finishing third in the NL
MVP voting last season.
Seager turned 23 yesterday, and his 252 career hits prior
to his 23rd birthday rank third in Dodger history, trailing
just Adrian Beltre (466) and Willie Davis (288).
The North Carolina native has hit safely in eight of his
last nine games, batting .375 (12-for-32) with a double,
three homers and seven RBI since April 18.
Tomorrow night, the first 40,000 ticketed fans in
attendance will receive a Corey Seager bobblehead,
presented by Spectrum.
Seager leads the Dodgers and ranks 11th in the National
League with a .450 batting average with runners in
scoring position (9-for-20, HR).
THE BOYS AT IT AGAIN: In yesterday’s 10-inning victory,
the Dodger bullpen fired 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just
three singles. Dodger relievers rank among the National League’s
best in ERA (3.15, 2nd), opponents’ batting average (.217, 3rd),
WHIP (1.17, T-3rd), opponents’ on-base percentage (.285, 1st),
opponents’ slugging percentage (.310, 2nd), strikeouts (85, 3rd) and
fielding independent pitching (2.42, 1st). The bullpen has also
posted a 3.15 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which leads the Senior
Circuit, and allowed an average of just 0.36 home runs per nine
innings (3 HR/74.1 IP, 2nd, NL)
FERNANDOMANIA-C: On this date in 1985, Dodger legend
Fernando Valenzuela established a Major League record by
extending his streak to 41.0 consecutive innings without allowing
an earned run to start a season. In the ninth inning of his fifth start
of the campaign, Valenzuela allowed a solo home run to the late
Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, snapping the streak as he suffered the
loss in a 1-0 Dodger defeat.
IN THE COMMUNITY: The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation
(LADF) yesterday announced the significant expansion of
Dodgers RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) in Northeast and
East Los Angeles, affording an additional 2,000 boys and girls the
opportunity to participate in the program in those regions.
Tomorrow morning, the LADF will host nearly 500 Dodgers RBI
players for an Opening Day celebration presented by Partnership
for a Healthier America’s Drink Up campaign and a Dodger Day
presented by ARCO at Belvedere Park located at 4914 Cesar E.
Chavez Avenue in East Los Angeles. The day kicks off at 8:30
a.m. with a youth baseball and softball clinic for registered
participants, and Dodger players Scott Van Slyke and Chris
Taylor will join the event at 10:15 a.m. for a workout, conducted
by NIKE. In addition, Dodger Alumni Dennis Powell, Al
Ferrara and Billy Ashley will also be on hand, and Dodger
broadcaster Jorge Jarrín will emcee the program.
