Pikwakanagan Tibadjumowin – August 28, 2020
Dear Members of Pikwakanagan,
On August 27, Indigenous Sport and Wellness Ontar-io announced the Masters Indigenous Games would be taking place in Ottawa in 2021. This means that we will be the Host Nation for these games, which are held every three years. In lieu of my physical pres-ence at the announcement in Ottawa, I was able to send a video. What began as a simple video state-ment, became a neat little production showcasing both my own personal wellness attitudes and the beauty and possibility for sport and wellness in Al-gonquin Territory.
Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/r2mxJr7Cgyw
Script below: “Kwey kwey, Hello Bonjour
My name is Wendy Jocko, chief of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. Anishinabe aking ate aw-so kikina-wadji-chigun (This land we are upon is the traditional territory of the Algonquin people). We are honoured to be the host nation for the Masters Indige-nous Games, produced by Indigenous Sport and Well-ness Ontario, taking place in Ottawa in July 2021.
Algonquin Territory is the perfect training ground and recreational destination for professional and amateur athletes alike. From land to lake, in all seasons, we have the landscape and facilities for every sport and activity.
For me wellness includes mind body and soul which is essential for an optimal level of wellness. I remem-ber my mother saying to me when I was a child, “you only have one body take care of it.”
I like to ride my bike during the summer in order to increase my endurance, heart rate and breathing. All the basic activities to run a household, including car-rying in wood, require a certain level fit-ness. Activities such as these make me stronger which is essential at my age.
The Masters Indigenous games is an opportunity for our athletes, their supporters and communities to showcase their physical prowess. The games show-case the connection between sport, wellness and cul-ture.
Pikwakanagan and the larger Algonquin Nation have an excellent, model relationship with the City of Otta-wa and the Masters Indigenous Games are another example of this reconciliation in action.
Miigwetch, Thank you, merci beaucoup
Wendy Jocko, Chief

YOGA AND DIABETES
A daily yoga practice can become an important part of Indige-
nous Diabetes wellness. Not only does it relax, stretch and
work your muscles, it relaxes your mind as well. Certain pos-
es may even help both blood pressure and blood sugar levels
to drop while improving circulation.
In Indigenous culture, we look at the whole person in a holis-
tic approach. This is mirrored in yoga philosophies. Yoga
looks at our mental, physical, spiritual and emotions health to
create wellness. Stress management, self-care, emotional
management, and spiritual connection can be learnt through a
daily yoga practice.
Don’t have a yoga teacher around? The Indigenous Diabetes
Health Circle has developed a 15-minute morning sunrise yo-
ga practice as well as a 30-minute afternoon practice for any-
one to stream from their website. Go to https://idhc.life/
videos/ and scroll through their videos to find these 2 yoga
sessions.
Adding a daily yoga practice to your life will add a holistic
element to your healthcare and improvements in your mental,
physical, emotional and spiritual selves. I will be giving away
yoga mats to the first 20 people to sign up with me at diabet-
[email protected] by Sept 8th.
