THANK YOU!
I would like to say meegwetch to the Makwa Sports and Recreation Department for their donation in helping me to travel to the World’s Horseshoe Tournament held in Florence, South Carolina.
I had a chance to meet new throwers and to rekindle with past acquaintances. It was a fun three days of throwing shoes and I did it and finished in first place. I am now a World Champion in my division.
Again, thank you for your support.

OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY AUGUST 31, 2018 National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP)
In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day 2018 let us honour and remember the lives of our friends, family, community members and loved ones who have died by a drug or alcohol overdose, or a substance abuse related incident. Today and all days moving forward let us embrace the special people in our lives who are struggling with
substance use disorders, rather than disconnecting from them or shaming them. Let them know that they are loved, and that you do care. Encourage them and let them know that help is available if they are ready and would like to begin their
healing and recovery journey. Help them by supporting them to make healthier informed and conscious decisions in order to reclaim balance within their own lives. Together we are stronger, and together we can break the stigma and shame that may be attached to our people who struggle with addictions. Love and support your brothers and sisters,
and remember that anyone is capable of change, healing and recovery.
‘Naloxone Nasal Spray’ training and kits which are used to reverse an opioid overdose temporally are available at any time Monday to Friday 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m through NNADAP which is located at Health Services in Pikwakanagan. If
you would like to receive a Naloxone kit, please stop by and/or contact Alex @ 613-625-2259 Ext 228 to receive your kit today.
‘NNADAP Community BBQ and Naloxone Training’ will take place during the 1st week of September 2018 stayed tuned to next week’s newsletter for more details.
Chi Meegwetch, Alex, your community NNADAP Worker
National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP)
What is a residential treatment centre for First Nations People?
NNADAP and Health Canada have 49 funded First Nation residential treatment centres throughout Canada which focus on the healing and recovery of substance use disorders by providing care in a live-in treatment centre, 24 hours a day and 7
days a week. Length of treatment cycle vary from centre to centre, however most are 4 – 6 weeks in length.
Residential treatment is a combination of intensive therapeutic services, Anishnabe cultural teachings and ceremony offered by residential treatment centres which accommodate people to treat a variety of concerns regarding substance use
disorders. These centres are in place to provide safe, effective, evidence-based care for First Nations people who have experienced profound negative consequences from issues related to substance abuse and addiction. In NNADAP treatment centres individuals have the opportunity to address the 4 aspects of our lives which include; mental, emotional, spiritual and physical with certified addictions counsellors, cultural coordinators, Elders and mental health professionals. The vison is to
offer First Nations people a quality cultural healing journey.
If you have thought about reclaiming or working towards healing, balance and recovery or to gain the skills necessary to heal from addiction, please contact Alex your community NNADAP Addictions Worker to discuss your options and to begin
your treatment planning.
The Wanaki Centre in Manawaki, QC next available treatment cycle begins on November 5th- December 7tht, 2018. The Wanaki Centre which resides on Algonquin Territory in Kitigan Zibi is also the closest NNADAP treatment centre to
Pikwakanagan. Treatment planning, the application process and the acceptance approval does take time and I am here to help you get started. Please do not hesitate to contact Alex @ 613-625-2259 Ext 228 for more information or to begin your
healing journey.
