HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM A DIABETES SPECIALIST VISIT

Many people are a bit disappointed when they see a diabetes specialist. We think of ourselves as “patients” and expect to be told what to do by the “experts”. The truth is that most diabetes educators don’t want to tell you what you should do, they want to help you decide what choices you have and what the consequences of those decisions might be. It helps to be prepared for that conversation. There are a few simple things you can do to get the most out of your next visit:

Before the visit: o Ask your doctor for a copy of your “Diabetes labs” before you go to

the clinic; o Know your medications (name, amount and when taken); o Bring a copy of your blood glucose readings (1 – 2 weeks’ worth); o Think about what health issues are important to you and what you

are (or aren’t) willing to do about it; o Write down any important questions you want answered.

During the visit: o Share any observations about your diabetes in general (“I’ve noticed

that if I take my medicine later then my sugar is better in the morning”);

o Let the team know if you are having difficulties (“I can’t get enough blood for my tester to work…”)

o Make sure you understand any changes to your care plan before you leave;

o Make sure you have a follow up appointment (and if you don’t want one, it’s okay to say “no thanks”).

After the visit: o Remind your doctor(s) that you are working with the Diabetes

Education team; o Phone the clinic back if you have any questions or if anything

unexpected happens that might affect your diabetes health (higher or lower numbers, illness, upcoming surgery).

o Best of Health!
