DESCRIPTION

Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin is seeking a person with knowledge of the Algonquin Language or Ojibway language to assist with activities promoting the oral and written language of the Algonquin of Pikwakanagan First Nation. RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this position.

To support the revitalization of the Algonquin Language through workshops and language classes;

To increase the accessibility of the Algonquin Language instruction in the overall Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation community;

Organization of 25 weekly Algonquin community language classes;

To work with the Youth of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation to create 4 books in the Language;

Engage and work with contractors, workshop facilitators and artists;

Complete and manage reporting requirements throughout project.

QUALIFICATIONS

A post-secondary diploma in a related field, and/or the equivalent 2 years’ experience will be considered an asset but not required;

Excellent organizational skills (oral and written) and the ability to excel at details, multi-tasking and to safely and effectively work under pressure;

Must be able to travel when required and have a current, valid driver’s license, accessible transportation and appropriate insurance;

Must provide a current vulnerable sector check; Must be able to work a flexible schedule and

weekends when required;

We will begin our day with a Water Ceremony from 10:30 to 12:00

The rest of our day will be about enjoying time together as a

community over a free BBQ lunch from 12:00-1:00

Followed by an afternoon packed with super fun activities for all to enjoy….

“OUTDOOR ACTIVE IN PIKWAKANAGAN”

The Pikwakanagan Sports & Recreation Department is happy to bring “Outdoor Active in Pikwakanagan” to all our community members. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Ontario for providing us with the ability to offer a Water Sport Program with Kayaks and Stand-Up Paddleboards (SUP’s) for all to enjoy!

With assistance from the Ministry of Ontario the Pikwakanagan Sports & Recreation Department has been able to purchase 4 adult Kayaks (2 sit-ins & 2 sit-ons), 2 junior Kayaks, and 2 adult Stand-Up Paddleboards. We have also purchased all the paddles to go with the Kayaks and SUP’s, and of course we have purchased some life-jackets in a variety of sizes.

Beginning on Tuesdays and Thursdays we will have our Kayaks and SUP’s available for use in the bay at Randy’s Campsite. The Water Sport program will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will also be weather permitting, if it’s raining, thunder, lightning there will be no program on that night! We also please ask that you respect all marked areas at the Campsite and stay away from wet, soggy areas that are trying to dry! Park up on the higher ground, should you come down for the evening to use the equipment!

It will be a first come first serve basis with the equipment, should it all be gone out when you arrive we encourage you to check back later to see if it has come back in for use.

IMPORTANT! You must be 16 years of age to take a Kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard out on your own, any children/youth under the age of 16 years MUST be accompanied by a parent. Information/Waiver forms MUST be completed before use of the water sport equipment.

LIFE-JACKETS MUST be worn at all times and we fully encourage you to bring your own life-jacket should you have one (must be current and appropriate in size/weight).

COMMUNITY LENDING HUB Pikwakanagan Sports & Recreation Department is thrilled to announce the addition of Water Sport equipment to our Community Lending Hub inventory!

We are thrilled to be able to offer the following from our Lending Hub:

o 4 Adult Kayaks (2 sit-ins, 2 sit-ons) o 4 Junior Kayaks (2-6ft, 2-8ft) o 2 Adult Stand-Up Paddleboards (11.6 ft) o 2 Junior Stand-Up Paddleboards (8 ft)

We also offer life jackets and paddles to go with our water sport equipment for loan.

Our inventory will continue to grow over the next while with much thanks to the Ministry of Ontario for their assistance in our department being able to offer this amazing equipment from our community lending hub.

We also offer 10 sets of Junior Callaway Golf Clubs for loan from our lending hub at the Makwa Centre.

An equipment sign out form MUST be completed at the Makwa Centre before equipment is loaned.

You MUST be 18 years of age or older to sign out any equipment from the lending hub. Children and youth under 18 require a parent to complete the equipment sign-out form.

Equipment from the lending hub has a two day maximum lending span (except for Tuesdays and Thursdays during the months of July and August for the Kayaks and Paddleboards).

Water Sport equipment will not be loaned on Tuesdays and Thursdays as this is our Water Sport Programming evenings held in the bay at Randy’s Campsite.

Please ensure you read and abide by the CONDITIONS set out on the equipment sign out form.

There is no cost to using/borrowing the equipment from our lending hub, however we respectfully ask that you take very good care of all equipment during your time of use.

Algonquins of Ontario Invitation to a Community Meeting

Algonquin Land Claim Draft Environmental Evaluation Report

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, on behalf of the Government of Ontario, and hosted by the AOO communities, invites AOO community members to attend information sessions on the draft environmental evaluation report it will be sharing for public review in September and October. These meetings will provide Algonquin community members with an opportunity to share perspectives and ask questions about the draft report at their own community meetings.

What is it about? This is part of the work that Ontario needs to do to satisfy Environmental Assessment Act requirements as described in the Algonquin Land Claim Declaration Order and to establish proposed municipal official plan designations and zoning which will apply once the lands are transferred into Algonquin ownership.

Ontario’s Draft Environmental Evaluation Report assesses the potential environmental effects and any potential necessary mitigation measures on the following items that form part of the proposed settlement lands package:

•Transfer of provincial lands •Transfer of assets on proposed settlement lands (e.g., Ontario ranger camps)

At this meeting, Ontario will be sharing information about the purpose of the Draft Environmental Evaluation Report and the upcoming public consultation process.

The evaluation: •Focuses on the proposed Settlement Lands identified in the Agreement-in-Principle •Explains the social, economic, cultural and natural environment •Helps to identify matters where we need to focus on finding solutions

This is a Draft EER. A future Final Environmental Evaluation Report will be made available following public open houses and further discussions with the Algonquins of Ontario over the next year.

CARDIAC PREVENTION PROGRAM As your fitness provider for over the past decade I want to offer you another opportunity to help you stay healthy, or get healthy and prevent cardiovascular disease. In a recent study by the Cardiac Care Network they found that in First Nations Communities across Ontario the leading cause of death is circulatory disease. The stats showed that of the First Nations studied 46 smoked, 79 percent are physically inactive, 35 percent are obese, and 20percent have high blood pressure. These stats are scary.

However on the flip side of things another study conducted by The Canadian Medical Association, found that those who live in areas with better access to preventative health care had much lower rates of cardiac events. I feel that our community has great access to a dedicated team of health care providers which makes us much healthier individuals.

What I would like to offer is a Cardiac Prevention Program. This program is different than the heart wise program that is already established and well used. This program will be for individuals who have not had any type of cardiac event but have one or more risk factors that would increase the chances of having one. I will be starting the program in September before hunting season approaches. I will keep you posted on dates to watch for.
